Bought my potty mentor. Excellent chap to work with. Deal with confidence.

Markbass Nano head, 300w at 4 ohm. Feather light and tiny, but big sound. Original box. Almost brand new, played half a dozen times. Markbass sound, although without the MB VLE and VPF filters. Some people like the filters, some don't. But much of the filter effect can be reproduced with the comprehensive EQ. Some photos show the head as an in-yer-face bright red and yellow. It's not really. In the flesh it's more a tasteful rose gold/copper shade, as shown here. Happy to post, price includes courier.

OP here. Tnx for all the input. Pretty much as I expected, but its nice to have it confirmed. I do agree that selling my current PJ cabs isn't going to put me on Forbes' rich list. I also think the 2x7" is too little for anything but a small acoustic gig. I'm keeping my eye out for a cheap Ashdown box to see me through the lean years before my next gig, and until I find it I'll advertise both PJ cabs and obv keep them to hand until they go, which may be a while.

I'm a poor ol' pensioner and have limited resources. On the grounds that it took me seven years to get in my first band, I'd like to free up as much dosh as feasible while retaining the bare necessities for when the next seven years is up. Anyway, treat it as a tech question: what's the minimum you can get away with weight, size and cost-wise with an average small band.

We're talking Norfolk here. All is simples. PA to the DI would be Sylvia wot works for the CID.

Being without a band again (sigh) I'm thinking to downsize my investment in gear. I've been tinkered with the idea of flogging my Phil Jones cabs and buying a cheap Ashdown to go with my MAG300 head. But then a cheap cab will likely be heavy, an impediment if I do ever get in another band. So then I thought about flogging my 4x7" Phil Jones cab and keeping the 2x7" to go with my Markbass Nano. Super small, super light rig... but would it be powerful enough for a small pub gig with drums and guitars? The Nano's rated at 300w, the Cab 27 at 200w. With the single 8 ohm cab the Nano will be doing around, what: 150-180w? In your experience and/or opinion will that be enough, do you think? After all, people run the Elf through single 10" and 2x8" cabs. Yes, I know I could simply try out to see, but like I say I no longer have a band - or any mates (sniff).

Exactly the same good, but upper and more down. I was going to say we will never know, but maybe a studio genius could raise and lower some of his playing so it sounds like he's playing a six. Twould seem nothing's impossible today.

Just think how good he'd have been if he had been

It's important you womble along at your own speed. But if you fancy a bit of structured learning, book a two week free trial of Scotts Bass Lessons. if you cancel promptly before the trial is up it won't cost you nowt and his 'nursery slopes' are amongst the best in the business. Or you could browse his free online material.

Ashdown told me to push the gain well up and do the throttling on the output. I'm a fan of an EQ set up I found accidentally on my MB LM 2 with BF 210 - bass 11-12, lo mid 10, hi mid 9 and treble 8-9. I generally have to push the low mids ups a tad to cut through in a band.

Serious lightweight fretless 5 string. Soap bar Bart Mk 1 pickups + piezo. Nice figuring on fretboard. Excellent condition with almost new Dunlop flatwound strings. £500 posted well packed in gig bag/box, prefer £470 collected or meet around the middle of East Anglia [no sale outside UK]. PM me if you want more info or pix. (Stub fretlines mean playing 'unlined' is not nearly as tricky as you might think)

I only know the BF end. It goes without saying the One10 is a gorgeous wee mite, and you'll have to spend more money on a beer glass to place on top to stop it blowing away in any passing breeze . But.. but.. it's surprising how often you hear people say, with @grandad "I had a One10, fantastic... so good I bought another". And there's the rub. I too was amazed by it, but moved onto a Two10 just to get more oomph behind the oomph.

Phil Jones Cab 47 4x7" drivers 300w@8ohm, with cover £200 17.5 Kg and very portable due to its small size, this high end cab is great for acoustic applications with its transparent tone. But I've also used it with its smaller 2x7" sibling in a loud rock n roll band to good effect. So basically if you want a 410 but smaller, a little (or a lot) lighter, by a niche top quality cab maker, this is it. I would also sell the Cab 27 (2x7") with cover, which I'm using as my small gig rig. If you wanted to make up a splittable 6x7" (see 4th pic) I'd do the two together for £350. Both cabs in excellent nick - the smaller cab has two v unobtrusive marks on the side tolex. Pick up from Suffolk much preferred. I don't have a box for the 47, but if needs must I may be able to cobble a box together. I do have a box for the 27. Postage will be ITRO £25 per cab.

Then you can start a new info avalanche by asking for advice on amp/cab buying lol. To save you asking, probably the same money again, ish, but prices can vary easily from £150 to 10x as much. You need 100w absolute minimum and if you end up gigging at some stage, ideally 2-300w +. If you're no longer young and fit lightweight kit is available but generally costs more. There's no Sire of the amp world; there are many brands, each with their supporters. Ashdown heads and cabs have much love on here and are cheap 2nd hand and easy to fix if they go wrong, but are on the (manageably) large and heavy side. Sorry, I know this is the Basses not Amps n Cabs thread but just thought I'd say like.

Sire... or possibly a Sire... or, if not, a Sire. Punch way way above their weight for the money, which bobs around the upper reaches of what you've got to spend for the older and/or cheaper models. Squier.. used to be the mutt's go-to, but IMHO not a patch on the Sire since the latter made its debut. Other ideas include the Revelations, great basses for less than your budget new. A lot of people swear by the Yamaha BB series. I've personally never liked or had any joy of them but I think I'm in a minority of one. For a tad more than your budget you might be able to get a Made in Mehico Fender. I bought a MiM P bass for £300 and it was a quantum leap away from all my other basses. Well boss.

i hadn't even noticed your typo, I quite often spell 'actually' that way if I'm feeling whimsical. And of course your opinion matters.

Akshirley, its not really. Unless you look closely it's just a graphic, with meaning on looking closely only if you need it, and isn't distracting or annoying. The main thing is I'm growing to like the little guy. I would like to have the short cut filters, but then I didn't worry about them too much when I had my Little Mark 2, and overall the sound works for me. Albeit with severeal hours fiddling on both bass and amp EQ. FTR, my preferred mix is on the head as you see it in pic, bass (Ibo SRF705) dialled back to bridge pup and piezo full only, tone middle on both or thereabouts.

know what you mean but not quite. In real life the red is more like a copper colour with a dash of red and yellow, or the red brass they make some saxes from. In other words it looks fairly cool, especially as its so small.
-
I hadn't realised how much I relied on the filter controls. So far I can't get the MB special tone I want from this little guy withe EQ alone. If anyone has any thoughts on what EQ settings I need do tell.

I like my Ashdown 300 MAG Evo2, but it's a tad bulky and a little heavy, and it OVERHANGS MY CABS (which is, like, unforgiveable). I like my PJ cabs, but I can't really afford a PJ head even when they come on the market secondhand. I like Markbass tonality, but I don't want to spend too much. I need a small light head that does around 300 whats. So I bought a MB Nano. Hopefully it will give me everything I need, even if it hasn't those two filters I can never remember the names for and is a rather fiery red and yellow with childish font. Hopefully the New Amp will arrive Thursday, from Wales. Look you.
