So here's a thing. After much thought and research i just bought a Sire P7 5 string fretless (£470) to replace my el cheapo ageing Revelation unlined fretless P bass clone (less than half that price new). Which one is the more beauty? Wellll, honestly? Back to back I SO much prefer the old bass. Sire... weight, looks, shape size tick. Sound, even fiddling with the knobs (and I've had four Sires before), not me. At all, so far. The learner stripes confuse me and having the dots in the wrong place even more so. Yes I know I only just got it but... sadly I suspect the Sire may be back on the road to Guildford again PDQ.

Couriers for bass guitars - recommendations?
lownote replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
I used to think that but I used Hermes for a big flurry of low value eBay activity recently and they lost just one (very) small package and were pretty professional about the follow-up. TBH I've had issues with Herpes, ParcelFarce, DHL, UPS. I usually go through Interparcel. And never had a total major failure with any of them. In fact the worse offender statistically for me for slowness and loss is Thomann. They've lost a couple of packages and an amp arrived with the box so stove in I can only assume their carriers were having a caber tossing contest with it. But they're all a ton better than they were a few years ago. -
You missed out Revelation, by Alan Enwhistle. Under £200 brand new, my fretless P bass kicks the nuts of every other P bass clone I've ever had (Squier, Westfield) and only really lost out to my MiM in the quality stakes.

I wouldn't be where I am today without Scott. I was with him very early on. He tried out a couple of ideas on me, I said no, he did them anyway and never went wrong. Which is why he is worth last time I looked north of a couple of million, and I'm ...not. And he is a nice chap.

Loathe them, chucked them within a day of fitting them. But that's just me, obv.

I searched but couldn't find this question - if I've missed a massive thread, then please delete. I am nosing around Sires again - fretless this time. But I am confused about the body wood choice, swamp ash or alder. I am confused because of conflicting online advice. Some sources say alder is heavier, darker, warmer, while ash is lighter in every way, weight and sonically. Then other sources say exactly the opposite! Is it that ash is wildly inconsistent, some examples being darker in tone and heavier in weight, or what? Is there a consensus?

SOLD on Reverb Maa Guitars fretless 5 milk paint

Afterthought - on further inspection I can't figure out the headstock badge. It's curved shape almost works for me, but at the same time it seems to be a sticky outy add on? I know this section is not the place for discussion, but as the owner (or maker?) seems to be aboard this thread, I thought I'd balance out my total admiration for the body and especially the single cut shape with a query re. headstock design. Bin me if I done bad. -
Revelation P bass ( Bass Gallery, other) is awesome for the price (< £200 new). Curious about your user name. Bit negative?

Annoying things people say to musicians
lownote replied to musicbassman's topic in General Discussion
Oooh, don't. That was ME when I turned up to haunt the band I'd left. Stand, judgementally and very still with drink, then slide away early as if I've seen enough. -
I think it's two things Dan, I haven't gigged or even rehearsed in three years, I always practise at tum sitting down and my new band do it standing up, a band px is twice as long as the usual gig. Three things. Right. PS I am of the age where I didn't even know 4 o'clock came twice in one day. Respec' to you.

Actually, not such a bad idea if I don't over do it.

Finally got the weighing machine out - 7.3 pounds. So, it's me.

I have a Revelation P bass. Curiously it's getting heavier. This can have nothing to do with my age, obv. Any suggestions for reducing mass? I suppose I'm asking if there are any remotely practical ways of thinning or hollowing out the body, so i am not expecting a tsunami of answers.

Hohner B Bass VI 6 string. Through neck. 34" scale, 17mm string spacing. No significant bumps or dings. Both truss rods work fine and are balanced. Electrics work fine. Removable ramp. Nearly new La Bella nickel roundwounds. £250 collected, £30 insured postage UK only. I will consider posting abroad if it's hassle free, like western Europe. Cartage will be more, obv. Please contact me for a quote. In the unlikely event you're considering a swap for a fretless 5 string or a Phil Jones D400, we can talk.

Stack for me - splits the weight, let's your specialise. Purely IMHO you cant go wrong with Markbass and your price range covers most options there. But it seems MB is a Marmite thing - you love the sound of Markbass or you don't. Even more than with basses, amps/cabs for me demand personal testing. Other people's opinions are worthless for your ear. I have bought many amps online and nearly always regretted it, and avoided painful bad choices by popping round and listening in person.

Chap I was en-banded (bound?) with in the very early 70s bought 'an old' P bass. So must be mid sixties. It was cheap because someone had repainted it British Racing Green. His missis recently told me it's still under the marital bed close on 50 years later, never been played since.

I is no electric Ian. But a while back I had a Markbass LM2, which I dropped at a gig. Thereafter it had an intermittent buzzy distortion. I couldn't find anyone to fix it anywhere - "ooh [sucks teeth] that's a Class D head, you're having a giraffe, incha?", except a company in Sheffield who actually take your kidney out and sell it before doing the job in the factory... they have a full operating theatre called Payments. So, no... But enter a bloke in Norwich, who argued whatever had been loosened in the original drop could be unloosened with a clout from a length of 4x2. Amazingly, it seemed to work, although even that cost me £30.

I have the chance to buy a TC 2x8 and a BAM 200, but its not practical to try before buying. Now, I already have a Phil Jones rig, which include a 2x7, and frankly it's pretty weak and thin sounding without its Cab 47 support act (when it becomes lovely). I am therefore a little sceptical of whether the TC 2x8 will have any depth of bassness, especially as I assume at the price it's not as high quality at the PJ rig. Does anyone have hands on experience of the BAM/2x8 rig and can commentate on its sound? Yes, I know I could stay with the PJ rig but it's got a lot of money tied up that I can't really afford at the mo, hence looking to down-price.

Saw her live at Perugia Jazz Fest five years ago. Trouble is, as always with live, you're in the gods and they're little dots on the stage. So apart from being able to say I was there and slept through most of it cos it was after midnight, it wopuld have been better on official video coverage.

Fretboard Accelerator Programme aka the Gary Willis book thread
lownote replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in General Discussion
Reverting briefly to the FA element in the thread title, my last word on Scott's Fretboard Accelerator programme is "I'm out". If you have enormous superhuman capacity for tortuous practice routines then the FAP is FAB, not doubt, and you will be the next Jaco. I'm lazy, old and have a short interest span. I'm so out I'm outer than an out thing. You might love it. I'm off to watch paint dry.- 103 replies
