1. Please could we see a picture of the back of the bass?
2. I'm a 5 too. I haven't fancied a new bass in ages. The last one I bought was a cheap J&D specifically to leave in the rehearsal room and wasn't GAS or necessity, just convenience. My Yamahas and the Valenti pretty much cover the whole tonal palette for me. I also think there's a lot to be said for getting really familiar with an instrument. I like my Yam 2024x more now than ever and I've had it five years.
3. Good guy to deal with. He's in great band too, Army of One. Check 'em out.
4. Sad, it seems to have been dragging on for ages and I read about the condition ages ago and thought at the time how horrible it was. Saw him playing with Toto once and was really impressive. RIP.
5.
(i prefer passive basses because sods law the battery always dies at the wrong time).
That's never happened to me, they last years. I think the best thing to do is get yourself along to Bass Direct near Warwick and try a load of instruments and see what you like and what grabs you. You'll undoubtedly get a load of specific suggestions but until you play one you won't know if it's right for you. I would tend to stay away from Fender 5-strings though based on the ones I've played.
6.
few tend to nail Keef's parts/feel.
Painful!
7.
We have been advertising for a vocalist for four months on the JMB website, I cannot believe the d*ckheads that have applied. That particular site does seem to encourage a fair amount of "time wasters"
We've had the exact same experience and it was my mood about this that generated this thread. Can't believe the idiots out there.
8.
He also plays the keyboards quite well too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKDzQid-FqM
Mills is an outstanding songwriter and all round musician, one of my all time favourites.
9. What's the weight? Under 8lb would be ideal.
10.
I couldn't even read it. It's far too poorly written! Also, what's up with all the... When did people start using three full stops to end a sentence?
You don't have to be able to write properly, just be into the content... ;-)
11. here is it as is... "Hi we're a 4 piece Band playing all our own songs, lots of gig experience etc... Looking for someone who can play bass to complete the lineup... Don't necessarily need to be a bass player first and for most, it's more a case of being into the genre... Similar to brmc, the verve, jake bugg, stone roses, Oasis, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Ben Howard and loads of 60s and 90s influences... If it seems like you're thing get in touch, we rehearse once a week, for gigs in the future" That's right, kids, you don't even have to be a bass player, just into the music. What a fantastic opportunity for someone. I might apply, it'll save me lugging all my kit around.
12. John did a fabulous loom for me for my Richie Kotzen Telecaster so that I could return it to factory spec wiring. The previous owner had made it standard 3-way, which is like dropping a 2.0 TDi into a Ferrari. We sorted the spec on Sunday and received the loom on Tuesday. It's a lovely piece of kit, beautifully made and he's a top bloke because I know he likes a drop of Scotland's finest judging by what the mock baseplate was made of ;-) I've now got two KiOgon looms but this is the first time I've dealt with him directly but it won't be the last. Five stars. 10/10.
13. I was told that I was the best lead guitarist that had ever played at the club we were playing. He went on to tell me how much better than Eric Clapton I was. I was playing cheesey covers on a five string Spector. There was no way he got me mixed up with the guitarist, he had a beard and hair, I have neither!
14.
Lol, the harp player at a jam I used to frequent
Where was this jam session? Heaven?
15.
Status Hotwire flats 40s - 100s on my Ray (though it is a fretless). Plenty of zing and low - medium tension.
Yep, it's the tension on a 34" that make these winners for me. I have a set on my Valenti and as far as I'm concerned nothing gets close; they feel great, the black stringers make them look fabulous and they're great value for money. And... they're British. Good for our economy, good for niche bass product manufacturing, fabulous products. You can't lose.
16. These are great value and have the range https://www.studiospares.com/Microphones/Mics-Condenser/Studiospares-S2000-Multi-Pattern-Condenser-Mic_449950.htm They're also under £100 and are perfect for recording everything else from a horn section in 360 degrees to vocals to acoustic guitar.
17. I got some '74s from Hot Rod for my J&D and they are absolutely fabulous and the service was spot on. The pickups are right up there with Aeros or Fralins and as a bonus they're British. I try to buy British wherever possible and practical; we need to support niche UK businesses that do great quality and offer good service.
18. http://www.presonus.com/products/FireStudio-Project I've been looking at this for recording my band in our studio. 4 or 5 drum mics, DI bass and guitar all into my Mac running Logic. I like that fact that it's got 8 real analogue inputs and not all the airy fairy virtual/midi/optical inputs that a DJ would require. Does anyone have any experience of this unit or a similar product that does the same job at a similar price! They're under £300.
19.
It's the volume control on a passive bass that I don't understand!!!
Once you start to use it, you'll start to understand it.
20. i was listening to Graham Cochrane of The Recording Revolution and he was recommending using alternative DAWs to explore and learn more about what's possible and to use accidental discovery to enhance the music making process. Do any of you advocate this? Is there anything to be learned other than how to drive a different DAW? Before I go downloading something and giving it a whirl, I'd be interested to hear if any of you do this and what you've learned. I use Logic btw.
