If you want cheap, easy and less faffing about, I highly recommend the zoom r16. I'vew had 2 in my time. Only limitation is that it does 8 tracks (although you can get two and connect them giving you 16 tracks). Great sounding, really easy to use. you can mix on the unit or you can export to a DAW and play about until your heart is content. Got phantom power in two inputs. Less than 200 quid, robust, easy to use. No need to rely on a laptop. In fact... I want another one! haha
They are very very good. I used mine to track a new song this week.

I use a Zoom H2n for recording writing sessions most of the time. This is an example https://soundcloud.com/belowtheghost/funky-meterstyle-thing Another simple way I do it is to run a large condenser microphone into my Zoom R16 and just place the mic in the room near the drums like this https://soundcloud.com/belowtheghost/death-of-robert-j-180515-1 A little sprinkle of compression and EQ afterwards and it's good to go.

http://www.mjwamps.com/taranis/ If anyone is seriously interested in buying one and trying one out let me know. Some of you might have seen the build thread on this last year. It's now available as a standard build. Or, it can be customised to suit. I've been running it for six months and it's now a part of the furniture, it's my sound and I wouldn't be without it. Well, unless you wanted to jump the queue and paid me enough to order a replica. They can be made to your own spec.

The MXR M80 DI+ sim is very good indeed. I've compared the two and the B3 is very close. I use my B3 as an interface and for home practise. It's definitely gig-able too. I've even used it as a drum machine for rehearsal when our drummer's been unavailable.
It's a funny one... It does little with some amps that they already contain a high pass filter of some sort. But with other amps the effect is clear: the speakers move much much much less, but the sound stays virtually the same. Sometimes I feel it changes nothing in the sound, other times the bass feels a bit... nicer, "tighter", perhaps. It's subtle. But it clearly saves speakers a lot of extra work and makes the amp work less hard. I use mine all the time. Sometimes I suppose I don't need it, but it's fitted permanently to my board. You can probably never use it and ba absolutely ok, most people don't use one! But... I feel better using one.
I agree with this. I wouldn't be without it.

Guys. Stop feeding the machine. Buy British, buy used, buy ethical, use your noodle. Just don't throw money at evil crap. Be as ethical as you pretend to be.

I'm a 5 too. I haven't fancied a new bass in ages. The last one I bought was a cheap J&D specifically to leave in the rehearsal room and wasn't GAS or necessity, just convenience. My Yamahas and the Valenti pretty much cover the whole tonal palette for me. I also think there's a lot to be said for getting really familiar with an instrument. I like my Yam 2024x more now than ever and I've had it five years.

Good guy to deal with. He's in great band too, Army of One. Check 'em out.

Sad, it seems to have been dragging on for ages and I read about the condition ages ago and thought at the time how horrible it was. Saw him playing with Toto once and was really impressive. RIP.
(i prefer passive basses because sods law the battery always dies at the wrong time).
That's never happened to me, they last years. I think the best thing to do is get yourself along to Bass Direct near Warwick and try a load of instruments and see what you like and what grabs you. You'll undoubtedly get a load of specific suggestions but until you play one you won't know if it's right for you. I would tend to stay away from Fender 5-strings though based on the ones I've played.

Bassist Wanted Ad on JMB - shows the mentality of some people
Sean replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
We have been advertising for a vocalist for four months on the JMB website, I cannot believe the d*ckheads that have applied. That particular site does seem to encourage a fair amount of "time wasters"
We've had the exact same experience and it was my mood about this that generated this thread. Can't believe the idiots out there. -
He also plays the keyboards quite well too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKDzQid-FqM
Mills is an outstanding songwriter and all round musician, one of my all time favourites.

Bassist Wanted Ad on JMB - shows the mentality of some people
I couldn't even read it. It's far too poorly written! Also, what's up with all the... When did people start using three full stops to end a sentence?
You don't have to be able to write properly, just be into the content... ;-) -
here is it as is... "Hi we're a 4 piece Band playing all our own songs, lots of gig experience etc... Looking for someone who can play bass to complete the lineup... Don't necessarily need to be a bass player first and for most, it's more a case of being into the genre... Similar to brmc, the verve, jake bugg, stone roses, Oasis, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Ben Howard and loads of 60s and 90s influences... If it seems like you're thing get in touch, we rehearse once a week, for gigs in the future" That's right, kids, you don't even have to be a bass player, just into the music. What a fantastic opportunity for someone. I might apply, it'll save me lugging all my kit around.

John did a fabulous loom for me for my Richie Kotzen Telecaster so that I could return it to factory spec wiring. The previous owner had made it standard 3-way, which is like dropping a 2.0 TDi into a Ferrari. We sorted the spec on Sunday and received the loom on Tuesday. It's a lovely piece of kit, beautifully made and he's a top bloke because I know he likes a drop of Scotland's finest judging by what the mock baseplate was made of ;-) I've now got two KiOgon looms but this is the first time I've dealt with him directly but it won't be the last. Five stars. 10/10.

Funny things that people say to you at gigs
Sean replied to Tom Brookes Music's topic in General Discussion
I was told that I was the best lead guitarist that had ever played at the club we were playing. He went on to tell me how much better than Eric Clapton I was. I was playing cheesey covers on a five string Spector. There was no way he got me mixed up with the guitarist, he had a beard and hair, I have neither! -
Lost dogs - basses you wish you could buy back... Have you got it now?
Status Hotwire flats 40s - 100s on my Ray (though it is a fretless). Plenty of zing and low - medium tension.
Yep, it's the tension on a 34" that make these winners for me. I have a set on my Valenti and as far as I'm concerned nothing gets close; they feel great, the black stringers make them look fabulous and they're great value for money. And... they're British. Good for our economy, good for niche bass product manufacturing, fabulous products. You can't lose.
