I haven't played a 2024/5, could probably never justify the cost but all you have to ask is do you care if the wood has been treated or what factory it was made in. I don't so the 1024 for me was a no brainer.
It's not quite as simple as that, so I'll elaborate and clarify. Wood treatment aside. The 2000s are luthier made in a workshop in small numbers to extremely high quality standards by highly skilled craftsmen and take many more man hours to complete. The 1000s, although extremely well finished, are factory made using mass production techniques and do not have the attention to detail throughout the process that the 2000s do. The resulting products differ massively in feel and playability to a discerning player. The difference between the two is significant and can be compared to the difference between a Standard US Fender and a Master Built Custom Shop Fender.
They don't make it easy for the average Joe, do they
D'uh! Obviously they do. It's a big company with a big marketing budget that knows exactly what it's doing and are super savvy to forums and how they work as well as a thorough understanding of sub-branding. As someone who is a marketing and product management specialist I see that they are very calculating, clever and set a great precedent. Good on them but please don't be so naive.
If so it would explain where he has been. What's the price on this? About?
I made it last week on a Shuker build course. Comes in just over a grand for cost of course plus preamp pickup upgrades plus Hipshot X-tender.
Did Rich (ou7shined) make this for you Sean? Looks fantastic!
No but his PingRay was a massive inspiration to me (for the second time) and the whole concept of having the MM in the "correct" position with the D+G coil of the P moved for'd toward the neck is one that I embrace totally. It's an outstanding pickup layout that takes everything that's great about both the StingRay and the Precision and improves on it and makes it possible in one instrument. Not all pickup configurations are entirely useful for me but the important ones that make this a real Swiss Army Knife bass are: P, MM in parallel (StingRay mode), P+J (one of my favourite combos and one the BBs do so well), P + MM in series which serves as a big fat two humbucker type sound. J solo and MM in Series solo aren't much use to me at the moment. Extra versatility is provided by the East MMSR as I love to boost low-mids however one modification is needed before we reach perfection and that's active/passive switching so that a passive P can be acheived.
What is thy fretboard? Where did this come from? Have I missed something?
Perfect pickup config... Lovely finish... Amazing fretboard.. And that action is beautifully low
The fretboard is bocote. The action is super low with no rattles. Amazing fret job.
Looks like a very useable bass . That fingerboard is beautiful . Have you managed to match the output of the MM pickup and the P pickup ? Probably easier than getting a P and J to match up , I would think .
The MM in parallel mode is nicely balanced with the P and saves any messing with amp between songs.

Martin is part of the bedrock of Basschat. He bought a set of strings from me and I give him 5 stars
-
They are fab. I ordered strings and they sent me strings. I was overwhelmed and have left a small token to them in my last will and testament. I have also nominated Adam for a minor gong from the Queen in the new year honours list; his services to music need recognising formally.

You could get a British luthier to build you one to your spec and it would be a million times better than anything Fender vod ever produce.
-
If you are using a Thunder as a back up for a P when gigging then beware how they hang on the body. If your P dies and you need to grab a backup, the Thunders hang about two frets forward of where the P hangs. This will inevitably lead to you playing in the wrong key at a moment when you are already stressed because your P has failed. Thunders are great by their geometry is VERY different and could lead to issues.

Sold a Yamaha BB to Rob. Great buyer, good communications and let me know as soon as the bass arrived. He was patient about delivery as I was away working and then we had the double bank holiday weekend to contend with so thanks, Rob for your patience. Enjoy the bass, play something funky!
OK had an update from Jon, the bass will be ready to be picked up mid next week!! Just in time for my next contract abroad. Excellent! Here is a picture of the body Jon took ages ago but only just sent me yesterday - Hopefully there should be some pics of an almost finished bass in the next couple of days before I go to pick it up!
I'm there all next week so we'll get to meet if you're collecting it :-)
