Yesterday I recorded a guitar amp/cab with two mics, an SM57 and also a large diaphragm condenser, the SC400 T-bone from Thomann. http://www.thomann.de/gb/the_tbone_sc400_grossmembranmikro.htm The SC400 is what made the final cut; it's warmer, picks up more low end and has a more organic sound.

The Tokai in the FS sale is probably a better instrument at ⅓ of that "discounted" price. I know which one I'd have.

I haven't been there for since 2010 as I'm still very happy with what the basses I bought at the time however my buying experiences and correspondence with Mark were always excellent. People do react differently to different people and I liked the no nonsense opinion. We disagreed on the sound of big valve amps and that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a big valve monster and Class D lightweight and that's great, it's normal, healthy debate, it's not sales BS. If I ever buy another high end instrument I'd definitely check out .

The postage is Effin expensive.

Both good. The pickups on the 1024 are absolutely fantastic and although they are available as a part from Yamaha, they are expensive. They're both very good value and both punch seriously above their weights.

Great basses. Used to have one and have managed to replicate it's sound in my Bitsa Yamaha BBingRay.

I use a Zoom H2n for recording writing sessions most of the time. It's now available as a standard build. Or, it can be customised to suit. I've been running it for six months and it's now a part of the furniture, it's my sound and I wouldn't be without it. Well, unless you wanted to jump the queue and paid me enough to order a replica. They can be made to your own spec.

The MXR M80 DI+ sim is very good indeed. I've compared the two and the B3 is very close. I use my B3 as an interface and for home practise. It's definitely gig-able too. I've even used it as a drum machine for rehearsal when our drummer's been unavailable.

Guys. Stop feeding the machine. Buy British, buy used, buy ethical, use your noodle. Just don't throw money at evil crap. Be as ethical as you pretend to be.

I'm a 5 too. I haven't fancied a new bass in ages. The last one I bought was a cheap J&D specifically to leave in the rehearsal room and wasn't GAS or necessity, just convenience. My Yamahas and the Valenti pretty much cover the whole tonal palette for me. I also think there's a lot to be said for getting really familiar with an instrument. I like my Yam 2024x more now than ever and I've had it five years.

Sad, it seems to have been dragging on for ages and I read about the condition ages ago and thought at the time how horrible it was. Saw him playing with Toto once and was really impressive. RIP.

I think the best thing to do is get yourself along to Bass Direct near Warwick and try a load of instruments and see what you like and what grabs you. You'll undoubtedly get a load of specific suggestions but until you play one you won't know if it's right for you. I would tend to stay away from Fender 5-strings though based on the ones I've played.
