John at Dearnaley Guitars in Cardiff has always been good too.

Where can I get a custom scratch plate done? I need a simple three-ply black/white/black cut to a suit. Would I need to send the bass (body) away to someone who could do that for me? FYI, this is the shape I want (or near enough would do):

Absolutely gorgeous! Well bought!

How much should we be paid for playing parties?
Sean replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Whatever you go with, slap a percentage on top to cover the haggle-factor.
Or for when people annoyingly muddle "haggle" with "barter", you could ask for a few goat fleeces and some eggs in exchange for your performance I used to do exactly the same set up as you and we charged £150-£250 depending how much we thought we could get. Smaller pub = £150, wedding = £250, mates rates wedding = £200. -
The BB414 is an incredible piece of kit for the money, there's a couple for sale here at the moment but they get overlooked by many people maybe because the prices are so low. Anyone starting a "recommend a bass" thread would do a lot worse than pick up a used BB414/614 and spend the change on a case/set up/strings/effects/cables etc. It's versatile, great quality and those pickups...

Who makes the axesrus pickups?
Dead Boys. Sonic Reducer. Yeah!
I've gigged this song over a hundred times! Never on bass though, vocals and guitar. It's amazing. It was always a real buzz when someone came over and responded positively to it too, they were usually older muso-punks or deeply geeky Pearl Jam fans. My last bassline learned was I Need a Dollar by Aloe Blacc, nothing much to shout about but that was the last one I learned on Thursday night

Jazz v. Precision Bass- question from [relative] newbie
Sean replied to barnettiuk's topic in Bass Guitars
It's like Groundhog Day on this forum sometimes The search facility on this forum is an excellent tool and will bring up dozens of Jazz vs Precision threads all of which have some excellent comment and I promise will answer all the questions you will ever have about said basses and also some you would never think of. -

They're pretty good and if you like changing your strings a lot then you can't go wrong.

The very complicated £200 Bass Challenge (with Sound Samples)
Comes from days gone by. IE - On the Titanic gig, the band had to learn around 300 songs. The songs were listed and numbered in a pamphlet given to the passengers. The band played in various rooms around the ship all day long. Passengers would choose a song from the pamphlet, walk up and shout out the number to the Band leader, who shouted the 'Number' to the band.
From a Health and Safety perspective, this is a superb idea and probably saved lives. Imagine if they had to remember 300 song titles rather than just numbers and then suddenly mid-gig one of the punters from steerage started shouting, "Iceberg! Iceberg!", the poor cellist would be fumbling around thinking, "Cor, blimey, I dunno that one, is it to the Rhythm Changes in Bb?" and by the time he's realised the ship's in trouble, he's lost his footing and fallen overboard. I might even try and adopt this system for my band, just in case. And the phrase I hate is when punters that have booked you ask you, "Do you think you could tone it down a bit?" Uh, yeah, I'll roll all my EQ off except the low end which I'll max out and I'll scream the nuts off the compressor, is that dub enough for ya, guv'nor?
Why on earth are you willing to take up this mad challenge ? I hope you have set a sufficiently stupid challenge in return for him ? If not, why not!
It's been fun and I've learned a lot. His challenge is the same but for a guitar and the budget is £250. He starts after his summer holiday, his missus has said that she'll put a "trade" embargo on him if he spends any holiday cash -
but for 200 squid that looks like a nice bass. how does she play/sound you need to tell us more!
Now that I've had a chance to play this bass quite a bit, I reckon it's definitely the kind of beater/workhorse bass that I can easily live with. The reverse P pickup sort of tightens up the P-bass sound of it, the coils are in opposite positions so the lower strings are less boomy than a standard P and because your thumb rests a bit further back than with a conventional P you're striking the strings (a bit) nearer the bridge given that I use a pretty normal fingerstyle technique. This bass came in at £160 and so that still leaves me £40 for mods if I want; it certainly doesn't need a bridge, the tuners are bombproof although I'm never going to get a Hipshot X-tender to match but I'm thinking about putting a beefier pickup in it. There's nothing wrong with the one in there however when I A/B this bass with any of my other passive P-pup loaded basses it does sound quieter, more vintage I suppose. I'm used to punchy P pickups and this one is just too polite for my taste. I'd like to keep the original look of the instrument with the pole-pieces showing so maybe a Wizard Thumper will do the trick if someone has one second hand. I had a Wizard Thumper in a CIJ P bass (Sid) once and it was glorious. The tone control on this BB400S is really good, responds well and behaves like a tone control ought to, not like those dreadful ones where you have to roll it three-quarters before anything happens. I've got some paper-in-oil caps somewhere and might give one of them a go just to see. The neck on this is more chunky than any of my other BBs and it just feels right, I get on with lots of neck profiles so this is rarely an issue. Overall the bass sounds very woody and partly down to that massive bridge it sustains very well even with Rotosound Flats on it. We're recording rehearsal on Friday so hopefully I'll get some sound clips up over the weekend. Build quality is typical of early-80s Japan, it's very well put together and although it's obviously not made from Yamaha's premium wood stocks of the time, the quality is undeniable. It's not heavy either, it's under 10lbs. One thing that has struck me lately is that this bass is a real candidate for a re-finish. -
leaner, mellower, funky blues thing and I'm thinking a smooth passive P/J would sound somewhat more fitting in the mix.
The Yamaha isn't lean or mellow and it isn't smooth, it's like a big nasty bear that wants to rip your bandmates' arms off; I never leave home without mine (which makes motorcycling a real pain in the arse). The necks are somewhere between a Jazz and a Precision but slightly more towards a Jazz and very similar to a real MM Sterling if you need a different reference. The Yamaha is easily tamed and I'd buy one of the many Yamaha BBs for sale on here and on eBay at the moment and spend the difference on... ...another Yamaha BB Or some motorbike gear or something else self-indulgent like a motorcycle bass rack.
