I'm always sorry to hear about any crappy transactions on here but fortunately they are few and far between. I've always had really sweet transactions with really sound people and the only regrets I've had is that either I haven't enough time when I've met up with them or (because I am rubbish at it and don't use facebook) keep in touch with them a bit better after the event. There have been a few transactions where we've chewed the fat for ages and had a great time and I hope to bump into them to catch up sometime soon. One especially, knows who he is , I've bought from twice and we could have nattered for much longer than the three or four hours we were chin-wagging away. Even deals that haven't gone to plan (one that I had ended up costing me a lot of cash and I dealt with that on trust) have been resolved quickly with excellent comms. I've pulled out of two over the years and I let the sellers know as soon as I knew and why with no BS - first was the three hour drive each way and me being unsure whether I'd get on with neck dimensions the other because I was inquiring on behalf of a mate's son and they already sorted him with a tasty Squier VM Jazz before telling me about it. Even the postal sales I've had have been fabulous including four or five foreign ones where the transactions get complex and postage is always a risk - I never get a proper night's sleep until it's confirmed in one piece at the other end! So, so far so good. But then again, I mainly deal with regulars that have excellent feedback and reputations as jolly good human beings.

Subjective, I know And, if that P was reversed it wouldn't do an authentic P sound thereby alienating many. At this end of the market (£2k+) some options (like MusicMan do) would be good, like maple board, reversed P, P in the bridge position, mudbucker in the Billy Sheehan position etc.

Pickup placement, obviously but then again a few millimeters here and there won't make [i]that[/i] much difference and to explain there is an article by Alex Claber in Bass Guitar Magazine about harmonic nodes and how pickup placement affects tone (I think it was BGM). There is also the pickup construction differences to think of (ceramic, alnico, number of windings etc) , the string types and the body and neck woods. Equally some P/J set ups have a pretty weak J that is no more than a "placebo" like in the Aerodyne I had where the J just sweetened the P and gave it some breath whereas other J pickups are well balanced with the P like in my Yamaha BBs and have huge output. When you're getting into minutia of P sounds, you need to ask yourself, what or whose P am I aiming for? Is it Paul Simonon's, James Jamerson's, Mike Mills', Roger Waters' or Steve Harris'? Most of the Jazz basses with P pickups will sound like P basses but whether they sound like the one in your head depends on a lot more than a few mm here and there in the placement on the body. Once you stick a variable EQ preamp in the equation your variables increase exponentially!

I've had tons of basses over the years but the Super BBs are the nearest to perfect for me as I can get. My 2024x gets most use and is regularly used to hammer out all sorts of rock material as well as funk and reggae. The 2025x is there for when I need lower register or a more meaty sound (the 5 has more oomph and heft to its sound than the 4). The build quality of these basses is outstanding and comparable to any £2000+ plus hand built instrument and although they are not cheap I think are priced about right given the current weak exchange rate against the Yen. You pay your money you take your pick. My 415 in orange flake is a gem and is kept strung with TI Flats and has a replacement Gotoh-alike bridge and Hipshot string retainers to improve the B string. I got it for £249 new (inc delivery) and have spent £20 on hardware making it a 5-string that is good enough for a discerning bassist to use as an outstanding credible working tool. If you like the P/J thing, appreciate great build quality and are not hung about fancy names on the headstock then the Yam BBs are worth checking out - I have never found a Fender to match, though a couple of Jap Fenders have come "close but no cigar"

The Bristol gig was fabulous. Peter is such a likeable bloke. The band was incredble and this must have been the best value for money gig I have ever seen; it was around £24 for nearly 3 hours of first class performance by a true great. I wish I could smile as much as Stanley Sheldon does when playing my bass...

I use an EBS MultiComp. Great compressor, very versatile and has a nice tube mode too; it's well within your budget especially if you pick one up second hand.

Looks like there are bullying issues from people who projecting issues from other parts of their lives onto members of the band. Get out and save yourself the hassle. If you're the type maybe you'll get some payback by punching someone's lights out too or nitromors their car or burn their shed down or make them kiss the gunner's daughter or walk the plank

Are the pickups the same in the 415 as the 615? They might be different to account for the preamp. Yamaha usually have excellent customer support and reply very quickly. The 415 pickups are thunderously hot. I'd sell the 615 and buy a used 415, chuck a Gotoh-alike bridge on it for £20 and some Hipshot string trees - these mods make the B string much better and you get an unbelievably good bass for relatively little money. I can't bring myself to part with my 415, it's really great especially now it's got TI flats on it.
