What are the top 5 (or 10) basses you've owned?
Sean replied to OutToPlayJazz's topic in Bass Guitars
1. Yamaha BB2024x - perfect in every way for a "4" 2. Spector NS-5 w/ U-Retro and EMG P/J pickups - like a Lamborghini, YFKI, Bra :-) 3. Lakland Skyline "AC" DJ with CS pickups - my favourite Jazz ever, real grinding growl (?) incoming Yamaha BB2025x - if it's as good as the "4" it'll be #1 That's it! I've had loads of really great basses but these ones are really special. -
I'm off to see them inWolverhampton at the Wulfrun hall. Nice little venue.
-
I had one on order for ages and cancelled it as they seem to be taking ages to get to the UK. I see they have them at guitarguitar now though.
-
Fianso bought my Spector LX and again the transaction was really smooth. Cool guy to deal with. :-)

Shep's a very good guy to deal with. I bought a volume pedal and env filter, well packed, quick despatch, good gear. Thanks very much.

I understand playing ahead of, behind and on the beat but if the drummer is playing ahead of or behind the beat, how is the beat defined? i.e. where is it? I'm guessing that it's the "natural silent click track of the universe"? And, if the drummer is ahead of or behind the beat, should I play relative to the drummer or the beat? Surely, if everyone in the band is playing (the same amount) behind the beat then it becomes on the beat? I'm also guessing that we're now into the vagaries of "the pocket" and as long as it works then all's well?

A quick Google says: Features: Two single coil pickups, 2 tone and 2 volume controls, selector switch, chrome plated hardware, Padouk fingerboard, 9 dot inlays, rear access control panel, and fixed bridge. 1984 - Introduced 1992 - Discontinued They looked to me as though you adjusted the pickup height via screw adjusters from the back of the body - weird but then again it's a Rickenbacker.

My Lord! It's got more knobs than all the ampless support bands at local summer festival put together! Seriously though, I kinda like it. The contours make it look comfy and it appears well balanced with that long horn.

Try as many as you can and buy the one that you like the best. < sound advice, even if I do say so myself.
-
Nice and easy. 100% recommended. Cheers, Gaf.

Go check out Hartke stuff - very good value if you insist on new. I wouldn't get hung about secondhand stuff, especially with £400 to spend; you'll get a heck of a lot more for your money trawling through the FOR SALE thread here.
-
I've done this and A/B recordings on a Lakland DJ4 (lost the recs now) and the difference is negligible and as far as any difference to the sound once you are in the mix, forget it. Spend your energies on other stuff like EQ tweaks instead.

I don't think I've had a bass that wasn't used in a function band that I've been in. My East equipped Spectors are very versatile for the smorgasbord of songs played but I'm tending to favour passive basses at the moment for these kind of gigs as it's one less thing to worry about. My Yam BB2024x has P/J pups, a three-way selector and a very responsive tone pot and gets me all the sounds I need.
Whilst on subject of the Aerodyne, (I quite fancy one) More Basschat induced GAS How easy is it to drop an onboard pre-amp into one? And is it possible without doing any routing for battery etc... Thanks in advance peeps!
The control recess on the aerodynes is very small. You might be able to get an Aguilar pre in there but I know an East J-retro won't fit. You could use an outboard preamp thoough, the East one is a J-retro in a box with a couple of cool e tra features.
-
Beware the Aerodyne. It's great if you can live with the body shape. That bound edge drives a few people, including me, nuts. The other small issue with the Aerodyne is that fitting many aftermarket bridges including the Badass requires routing and/or shims. On the plus side, it's pretty and has a good bridge as standard.

Lakland 44-75 (that's the DJ replacement) mock up
Sean replied to EssentialTension's topic in Bass Guitars
It is. Check the upper horn. DJ4: 44-75: I don't there's any reason to think distribution will change. The former Chief Operations Officer (John Pirruccello) is now the Chief Executive Officer - so although Dan Lakin has gone I expect it's pretty much business as usual.
Doesn't look like it will hang as well as the DJ as the strap button is further back. -
The Duff basses are MIM however, the very similar PJ555 is CIJ and the guitar emporium has them on special offer at the moment. Just a thought.

Bought an MXR DI from Dan. Very pleased, the pedal is immaculate and the transaction was totally smooth.

Make sure you hear the distortion in the mix of the band rather than on its own through your amp. What sounds farty unaccompanied can sound fantastic in the mix. Strange but true.

Guns &Roses sweet child of mine
Sean replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
What a fabulous song to play - this one always makes me smile especially with a good P/J configuration, a touch of chorus and a tiny bit of dirt in the sound. Once you've done your intro bit just lay back into that great groove and then make sure the big punches at the end are tight and your away. Duff has a really nice feel and all his runs and fills are very logical and instinctive so it's easy to stay on track, he's usually quite high in the mix too so it's easy to pick out everything he does. I feel some serious Duff-love rising to surface so I'm to listen to DM's Loaded now -
Blues/rock/zappa band wanted for wedding Cardiff June 2 2010
Sean replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
£200? I dunno. I see gigs on GoodParty all the time where people are budgeting £100-250 for a wedding band. I don't know where they get that figure from or what they expect for that money but I wouldn't let any band that was prepared to put up with all that wedding messing about near any do I was having. He'll get what he pays for. -
I always found Cantdosleepy and Paul, the very entertaining but they haven't been on here for a long time.
I speak to Paul all the time, he's absolutely fine and still as passionate about music as ever and probably as entertaining as anyone I know. He comes to stay with us from time to time and comes along to gigs to help out with lugging the gear. Great guy to jam with too.
