Take any jazz standard that you know the melody of (e.g. My Favourite Things) and then listen to the performance whilst keeping that melody going in your head. As the players take it away from the familiar theme, you will be able to hear a relationship between the tune you know and the solo. Eventually, you will be able to do this having only heard the main themes once and then you will really get a sense of what it is all about.
Here's an easy one: Miles Davis doing Time After Time, surely this is accessible to anyone? Enjoy
 2. How is the strap supposed to attach to that hook? Any ideas?
 3.
It's a community so there are more subtle things going on than a straightforward sale and purchase.
+1 I know that some people find it irritating but it's a fantastic luxury for people who are unsure of what something is worth or whether or not anyone would be interested in what they have. Also in the case of obscure or collectible stuff it solicits nuggets of info and assistance from other people in the know who may be able to help you sell something. I know many people on here who have been in two minds about keeping an instrument and have found a great trade by putting out feelers.
 4.
the ATK range is around 50 squids more than your budget, but is an awesome bass for the money
+1 I have one and it is fantastic. I did a review it on it here I'd definitely buy another and I'd sell my grandmother for a US ATK but that's another story.
 5. Check out this thing that should never have been allowed.
 6.
Lakland DJ4. Great basses. You're done!
What he said. I've tried 'em all and now I have two DJs, you really can't beat them with a stick in that price category. The Joe Osbourne model is just as good but a different vibe.
 7. Those Squier Vintage Jazz basses are gorgeous and by all accounts very well made. With Ibanez you can't really go wrong - that one will have a fantastic neck and the pre-amp coupled with those Bartolini (?) soapbars will make it even more versatile than the Squier. If I was buying with my ears, I'd probably go for the Ibanez and if it's all about cool, then it's the Squier. I don't know anything about the other one. Of course £250 gets you a hell of a lot more second hand...
 8.
I've got a Hohner B2A (I think that's the type, need to check that) headless 4 string in black and white. I've used it live before, but not for a few years. It's great to have as a back up with you, and also very protable.
Just bitten the bullet and pushed the button on one of these for travelling abroad. Initial impressions are good, I might do a review later in the week.
 9. Great service - I don't go anywhere else.
 10. Unliek some great bass playing, our discussions are rarely "in the pocket"!
 11. Look at this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=180302196295 £268??? New ones are £329! In answer to the OP - yes, they are definitely back.
 12.
This is the only headless I've ever hankered after. Can't find any of the buggers mind you...
I've been looking for one of those for ages and finally gave up yesterday. I just ordered a new Hohner B2A for traveling abroad and for taking to work to practise at lunchtime in the car. I played one a good few years ago and thought it was superb for what it is. They are made by Cort in Korea and the quality is excellent. I see them going new for £379 and upward on ebay and £479 at Thomann but I managed to get a bargain, even the second hand ones fetch silly money so I'd guess that they are having a comeback. Don't see many bands with them though.
 13. I had a PLEK set up done on a Deluxe Fender Jazz FMT at CCGX and it was OK but I wouldn't go back. It cost £120 I think.
 14.
I see this is back on ebay again...the overseas bidder pulled out on paying the £1400...so not so good after all.
Yeah, or that's what he said. I saw this Ibanez freakbass that was relisted after being won for £140 by one bidder. I think the "unforseen circumstances" are pretty obvious. There's a lot of it about. Obviously I could be completely wrong and the lister could have been stiffed by the bidder. I agree that at the moment good stuff is maintaining its value where the middle level stuff is dropping off.
 15.
What a tit.
+1000 - Basschat understatement of 2008 so far.
 16.
How do you fill all these enormous venues playing original material btw? I must know the secret.
I think it helps when the original material in question is so damn good - I was singing along first listen Rich harmonies help loads too.
 17.
My money is in a Markbass LMK. Takes some beating for sound, power, weight, size, features and money.
+1
 18. Last two days... Jackie Wilson's Lifting Me Higher (or whatever it's called) - one riff all the way through! Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way Kirsty MacColl's New England Sugar Pie Honey Bunch by the Four Tops Nothing challenging there other than actually concentrating on getting them learned for Thursday's rehearsal and not being distracted by that transcription of The Real Me in this month's BGM.
 19.
He's from Belfast, Ireland. And yes he is great and has helped me out a lot playing wise.
Just for our American friends, Belfast is in Northern Ireland which is part of the UK's constitutional monarchy. It is not in the Republic of Ireland, which is an independent nation. My Irish ancestry gets pedantic about this stuff so please excuse me. Dave Marks' walking bass stuff is fantastic and for me it explains the concept in way that is much easier to grasp than say, Ed Friedland or Gary Willis. Dave's site says there's a lot of new content on the way soon so keep an eye on it.
 20.
I think I may turn to the comparatively expensive 'virtual batteries' for it.
What are virtual batteries?
 21. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ip1zsUIosoA - try this one, it's stunning. Live from 1981 in Houston. Perry's voice is killer and so passionate. I learned it for our band (girl singer) and hadn't heard it since I was a kid. I love the way they end it.
 22.
Drummers have chops?
Ours has pork chops, every Tuesday when he gets in from work!
 23. I was out at Tesco at 1am today getting batteries for the Tone Hammer which arrived yesterday. I managed to get it plugged in and have a play before I was too sparked out to care. It's extremely well made, has a superb quality feel, it's a great colour and is easy to use. I sounds exactly as I wanted it to and has a great range of sounds. I'll try and record some clips this evening, maybe some dry and some wet.
 24.
There's been one other thread about the Tonehammer in this forum I think. Didn't reach a massive size. Now Talkbass on the other hand.
Loads of chat on talkbass about the Tonehammer. I tried an AG500 a while back and it sounded great - once I knew the TH was the preamp part of that then it became a logical choice for a good DI/Pre-amp especially since I never got on with my SansAmp and didn't like the (overcomplicated for me) MBII. Sadowsky DIs are pretty good but not me. Anyway, sodding thing still hasn't arrived for one reason or another and not entirely anyone's fault but I'm told it's arriving tomorrow. I have the poor lad that has lessons with me coming round within minutes of me getting in from work and then I'm out afterwards so it'll be Friday before I have the chance to have a play with it (ooh err missus!).
 25. Dave, If you can wait til next year the 5-string Bob Glaub is out!
