1. Servisol. Was introduced to it by a bassist at a big festival gig one year and he spent most of the day sorting out dicky pots for people. Dicky Potts? He used to teach at my school!
2. Car Wash - Rose Royce version Atomic - Blondie will be the next one.
3. 700 mile round trip, that's a lot of diesel/petrol especially at today's prices. If cash isn't an issue, then go for it. I lived in Newcastle for four years and reckon it's one of the best cities in the UK. Do some google work and get on.
4. Great basses. It's already above what I paid for mine!
5. I think that's what evolved into the Deluxe.
6. Roll on the 5-string Lakland Bob Glaub.
7. Pot seems fine - still have a quiet J pup when its pot is up full and used with the P pup pot on full - rolled back to about 3/4 the J gets a lot louder. I can live with it but not knowing why is infuriating.
8. For what it's worth my ATK 400 is great. 1990s mahog body, ash top, maple nck - there's a review of it in the reviews section.
9. This one is new to me and I acquired it from one of our more prolific BC posters. Some of you may have seen it before in a thread. It's had a replacement bridge put on and a set of DiMarzio pups put on and it sounds glorious and plays beautifully. The DMs retain the vintage sound but just make it that little bit bigger and slightly more defined. I'll sort out some better pics at the weekend and put them in the porn section.
10. Yes, Dave. I tried that and it was exactly the same. I'm thinking that it might be a defective pot? Also looking inside my DJ I noticed that it has 500k pots whereas the usual for single coils is 250k. I thought that putting 500k pots with s/c pups would make them very toppy and horrible - evidently not, anyone care to enlighten me on this? Thanks Sean
11. I have just installed a set of DiMarzio P/J pick ups in a Fender Precision and noticed that when both the P and the J volume pot is up full the volume is lower than when the P is full and the J is rolled off to about 3/4. Rolling the J off further turns the volume down as you would expect. Any ideas why this spike on volume occurs at about 3/4 up the J pot? All three pots are 250k, Cap is 0.1 uF. J pup is a stacked humbucker. When the J pup is soloed the pot seems to behave normally.
12.
No offense taken and, no I don't - but then I'm fairly laid back and don't get anal about the sound too much. Personally I like the sound but at the end of the day I need a backup that'll get used in the band context. Thanks Mark, at the end of the day if the bass doesn't go I'll probably 'Shukerise' it - rip out the Villex mods (and part out for selling) and look for something more standard 'P'. It plays well, is of good quality and is worth the spend, but at the end of the day I would be happy with a stock MIA Jazz so that'd be easier. Cheers, Mart
At the end of the day, I'd be exhausted.
13. I lived in Newcastle for four years and will always have a soft spot for it. Cracking rig, Kev. Welcome to the machine, like!
14.
Either 1 finger per fret or 124 for some lower fret things.
This is exactly the way I was taught and it's become a subconscious thing.
15.
Just as likely (or even more likely) to be the capacitor - cut it off.
What difference does this make? Does this render the tone pot useless?
16. As an aside... An acronym is a word that has been made up from initials and other letters of words of a phrase, so AIDS, RoSPA, ROM, RAM, OPEC, NATO and WASP are all acronyms but TLA, SWF, GTFBI, HTML, RSPCA are initialisms. So next time you're on that awful training course in work and the trainer starts talking about all the "TLAs and other acronyms" you can tell the smug SOB that not only is he an obnoxious tosser, he is also WRONG. See y'all next Tuesday. S.
