Filling in the gaps...teachers, exercises and book ideas please!
Rabbie replied to AndyBass's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Hi Andy, teachers are really going to hate me for this, but personally I found the Artistworks online lessons with John Patitucci absolutely excellent and A LOT cheaper than a teacher. They will fill in the theoretical gaps you mention here, no bother! Of course if you want to be a serious professional orchestral and jazz player, you will need to go to a teacher or school, however for the serious hobbyist and the popular music player, Patitucci's lessons are fantastic. Patitucci school teaches mainly jazz, but that's more in the advanced section, whilst in the beginner and intermediate curricula you deal with easier jazz but also latin and blues. I came from guitar and electric bass and I needed to get better at upright bass for a project: well I was enrolled for 6 months and I think it really worked (ok, some may argue it didn't), plus getting personalised feedback from John Patitucci himself is surreal but wonderful: he's such a nice guy and soooo good that I don't think you'll ever find a teacher as knowledgeable and good as him. You don't have to send a video if you don't want to, you can just watch the lessons over and over again and there are theory lessons as well, which will work for you. Honestly I truly recommend it, especially at $120 for 6 months: that's 3 lessons with a teacher... Please forgive me teachers: I understand that the wannabe double bass professional must get a real life teacher, but for those of us who are serious enough, but have got other commitments, plus not so much cash, the Artistworks online lessons are great... -

I completely agree with the reply above. For the price you have in mind your best bet is to wait until you have another £ 7-800 to spend. Otherwise you will buy a worse than terrible instrument which will put you off playing double bass. My first bass was a Stentor which I bought for £600. It was not great but not as bad as the one mentioned above. As Owen said, in double bass you really get what you pay for. My Stentor lasted me 6 months, by which time I had understood what a db should sound like and felt I had to buy a decent one. If you bought a decent one to begin with, it would hold its value and if db is not for you, you could re-sell it and loose not so much on it. That's only my opinion though, you do what makes you happy. All the very best.

Emanuel Wilfer 3/4 gamba for sale - SOLD

Still for sale. Despite lots of interest, nobody serious yet. Of course £3,500 is hard to find nowadays, and Scotland is far for most. Still, when you think that you are getting a £5,000-£5,500 bass, the bargain becomes apparent. Lots of people in the gear section recommending that if you are lucky, you can get a second hand professional bass for the price of a beginner/student bass...well, this is it! P.S. - open to trade-ins/part-exchange, just try me. Thank you -

Bought this off a very respected member of this forum about a month ago. Used it once in the house. A change in circumstances has dictated a sale of the bass this was destined for (an amazing Wilfer bass, by the way, check out the listing). Anyway, this mic is going too! Nearly new (gigged twice) DPA d:vote 4099 bass mic with optional 2.2mm dia lead (incl standard one at 1.6mm dia). Also included is an ART Tube MP preamp that provides 48v phantom power. All you need to plug straight into any amp. Thomann price for this bundle is £398. I'm offering it for £280 incl UK shipping.

Emanuel Wilfer 3/4 gamba for sale - SOLD

Forgot to say, the Wilfer at the moment is wearing gut strings and it sounds great. However, if you come to try it, and you are a steel strings player, I can change the strings to something more similar to what you like so you get the feel of it with the setup you are normally used to. Just contact me and I can try my best. Thank you. -
It is with much sadness that I put up for sale my 1989 Emanuel Wilfer 3/4 gamba bass. An absolute modern gem of a carved bass suitable for orchestral and jazz pros alike and made exceedingly well in Germany. As the story goes, the old and praised "Juzek" basses were none other than Wilfer basses made in Germany and exported by Mr Juzek, but that's neither here nor there. This is a fabulous bass which you would get for around £5,500 new, but in this case it is all set up, bridge adjusters, sound post in optimal place and 24 years of playing to mature it. In saying that, this bass is in pristine condition, so it has not seen a lot of playing and it is just waiting for someone to leave their mark on it and really "open it up". I have to sell it because I need money for something else. BUT, this bass does not deserve to be let go for a disrespectful price, so I will accept offers around £3,500. Please get in touch with any queries. Thank you.
...I can sit all day long but boy do I feel tired standing all day !
That's fair enough sir. Still, according to evidence, your spine appears to prefer you either lying or standing, not sitting. Maybe we should learn to play lying down...now, I could do that all day!

I found Rufus Reid's "the evolving bassist" helpful back when I wanted to find a good position whilst not having a teacher. Ultimately I can't help feeling that the ideal position is the one which suits your body. If you, like Peter, can play all day in a position that doesn't hurt your back, shoulders or neck, then that's your position. I never took to sitting because I don't have a stool to practice with at home and also because I tend to arch my back when sitting, which is not good. From a strictly scientific viewpoint however, sitting puts a lot more pressure on our backs than standing, so the logical answer would be to learn to stand with the bass without straining or stooping and only sit for short spells in a good sitting posture. Of course I am no specialist on the matter but the bit about the increased pressure on your spine when sitting is true.

*SOLD* Danny Thompson signature strings, well used - £40

I was very lucky to have the chance to try these Danny Thompson signature strings, produced by Elite (Bass Centre), before they formally went on sale. I needed a steel string for a certain kind of sound and I found them excellent for my purposes. They have done about 20 gigs and recorded a whole album and I am happy with the results. They have been on my very dark ply for 7 months and succeeded in making it sound punchy and brighter, but now my flirtation with steels is over. So, I'd like to pass them on to whoever would like to try them, for a relatively small price, before deciding to pay the full whack for them (I believe they are on sale now for £145). As steels, there's still plenty life in them. They are what I would describe as medium tension, easy to play. Dimensions are more or less like your average steel strings (spiro, helicore, etc). Not as bright and growly as Spiros, but still unmistakably steel strings. Danny Thompson uses them, and there are a lot of Danny fans around, justifiably so as his sound is truly legendary. I don't believe in keeping things in a drawer so selling for £40 posted (in the UK).
