About 9 months old set of regular Evah Pirazzi. Have served me well, but I was fed up to chase a gut-like tone and hence went back to gut! I honestly do not know how long a set of Evah is supposed to last you, but they are in good nick, both on the strings and on the silks. Would suit someone who wants to try Evah regular gauge, but is reluctant to spend £160....So, here they are £50 posted within the UK.

French 3/4 bow made of brazil wood with nearly all it's hair still on. Definitely not a bow for the serious orchestral guy, no brand. Bought to try my hand at some simple bowing and I got on ok, so I have upgraded. Would suit someone who wants to do the same or just to take to gigs for the occasional long tone. £25 posted and comes with a lightly used cake of rosin.

Just bought these off eBay last week, I was intrigued to try a mega expensive setup at a fraction of the price. Unfortunately they do not suit my bass, so I am putting them back at the price I paid, £80 for both. Please note: both strings were declared to be 6 months old and the A string has been glued at the tailpiece afterlenght (by the previous owner) to prevent the winding coming apart, this repair looks very sound indeed. Still, a mega bargain given what you would pay for full price Olivs. Free UK shipping.

I am with strings like my lovely wife is with shoes and handbags, and most of the double bass players I know are the same (see Clarky above)...The problem is that there is no consensus of opinion, and that every bass sounds different with any given set of strings. It is an absolute minefield (for the wallet too!). Clarky gave you an excellent summary there. My opinion is the following. If you love the growly modern jazz tone of lounge jazz trios (from 1960s onwards) get Spirocore (unless you are primarily an orchestral player). If you love the old school sound of the double bass, dark, dirty, percussive, then you need guts. Problem is, guts are expensive, don't stay in tune, are difficult to amplify faithfully and they are a general maintenance headache. So, there are lots of guts substitutes around. I have tried maybe not all of them, but lots of them. The good news is that some of them sound half decent, especially for live gigs. The bad news is that you will quickly realise that nothing comes close to guts.

Here's another nearly new set (a month old) of Evah Pirazzi weichs. Came with my new bass. I tried to love them like I love the Evahs regular on my other bass, but... They are fantastic strings, a wee bit brighter, more modern than the regular Evahs and a whole lot easier to play. Definitely fab for the jazz player who bows as well. Would suit any other genre too (apart from full-on slapping). Full set (E,A,D,G), never gigged, on and off the bass only once, no blemishes. All for £90 including UK postage. January bargain!

Mmmm, thank you all for your excellent suggestions. I think that, at least for my next overseas trip I shall stick to the pickup of whatever hire bass I get. Might have to put up with a less than perfect sound, but then again, the audience often has to put up with my less than perfect playing...Meanwhile I shall keep my eyes and ears open. Thanks again

Thanks Mr Bassman, hire basses across the pond often seem to come with Underwoods (on request of course). Bassmax is ok for loud gigs but mine are not. Me and travel basses don't get on. It's a physical thing: lack of attraction you see. I really don't mind driving alone with my bass in the car to UK gigs instead of chucking a travel bass in with the other instruments. And my overseas travels are so rare that buying a travel bass would be a bit ostentatious. Nah, I prefer hiring. I just thought that a realist soundclip would let me carry about a 'bit of my own sound' but I very much appreciate the advice and thanks again.

Good point, I've played a Shadow 950 for ages, along with a Rev solo and I have never looked into any other pickup, so i've kinda fallen behind. I just fancied something I can take on and off rental basses and in both cases above you most likely would need a very small (but impossible) modification. I know nothing about the Ehrlund contact mic but I shall look into it. Cheers Clarky.

Gotta do a bit of travelling in new year with rental basses and all that. Would like to try a realist soundclip pickup, one of those you screw on and off the bridge in seconds (or so it seems). Does anybody have one they would like to get rid of in the Basschat January sale? If so, please PM me. Thanks.

Full set (E,A,D,G) Bought them on this forum and tried them for an hour: it just reminded me that they are not my thing anymore, tastes change through the years (and ears) and all that. So here they are back for sale. The previous owner said they have 2 months of use. Sounds about right to me. Some noticeable fraying at the peg ends of the A and G strings but otherwise in great nick with many years of life in them. £60 including UK postage.
