1. I've said "Thanks , but no thanks" to this bass. I prefer passive basses, so it makes little sense to buy this and then spend time and money to get it to where I'd want it.
2. No, I didn't get it. However, I'm homing in on something else, which may be even better; An E-series MIJ Precision with Maple neck... Edit/update; I've just found out from the seller that the original pickups have been replaced by "Active EMG's". I've asked whether wiring, pots and jack plug were also changed, and who did the work. If I bought the bass, I'd probably replace the EMG's with passive pickups (DiMarzio's, probably), and that adds significantly to the overall faff factor. Might give this one a miss...
3. Folks, I'm interested in a bass that's for sale in Hull, but the seller is saying collection only. Since I live in Manchester, that's not really feasible. If I run out of options, is there anybody who lives in Hull who would be prepared to pick up the bass and then pass it over to a courier for me, please? Answers via PM are probably best - that way, I'll definitely see them. Thanks, Steve
4. More poking around the web suggests the bass is a legit PB-38 model, described as a "lower standard Japanese-made Fender". Not quite sure what that means, however.
5. I have an MIJ Fotoflame/62 RI and that has a blank neck plate. Has "Made in Japan" above the serial number but not on the headstock.
6. I'm considering this for an upgrade project. http://cgi.ebay.co.u...E:B:WNA:GB:1653 However; Seems suspiciously cheap Very little information I can't see "Made in Japan" or "Crafted in Japan" above or below the serial number, although I think it does say "Made in Japan" on the headstock. Serial number of R036287 suggests 2004 - 2006 from Musky's table at post No.7 http://basschat.co.u...japan-question/in which case shouldn't we be seeing "Crafted in Japan" by the serial number?
7. Not much information. Bit of a gamble. Good price, though. http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/fender-precision-lyte-bass-guitar/1076063587
8. Because, unfortunately, the SB-2 Tributes have a J-width neck which would be too narrow for my paws.
9. Thinking about it, it's the MFD pickups I'm interested in. You can buy them direct from G&L. Maybe that's the answer - buy some pickups and drop them into a half-decent MIJ or MIA Fender P which I'll be able to source fairly easily without the expense and bother of importing a full bass from the States. Hmmmm...
10. Yep - I'm very tempted. That said, I'm not a great fan of the usual Jazz V/V/T control layout which this bass has. I'd probably change it to Pan/overall vol/overall tone. That would add a bit of cost, and I'd immediately change the bass from original spec which may impact on its value. It's a toss-up between the Fender and this: http://www.talkbass..../#post-16286006 I do realise that we're not comparing like with like here. I'm a big G&L fan, and I've been looking for a decent SB-1 for quite a while. The one in the States is less than a year old and is "as new", with the Certificate of Authenticity and all the bits and bobs. Total cost of bass, courier, taxes and duties is almost exactly the same as the Fender from Thomann. I already have a Fender MIJ P that I'm happy with, and I was looking for something with a P neck that would give a few more tone options without being active or having loads of confusing switches and knobs. Whichever I buy, I'd be buying without trying it. Which would be easier to sell on if I don't get on with it? Can't decide which to go for...
11. Bass has been traded now folks. May well be an SB-1 on its way... Thanks to those who got in touch regarding the L2000 Steve
12. What's all this about giving up!? I didn't start playing until I was 50, having not touched any sort of musical instrument before. In my last band, I was the youngest by 30 years and did occasionally feel like everybody else's dad. On the upside, I was introduced to whole swathes of music genres that I had no idea existed, and this was quite often not the case when playing with other 50-somethings who would tend towards Beatles and dad-rock, neither of which particularly interest me. As long as what you're doing is legal, decent and honest - get on with it and enjoy it. Steve
13. Thanks Rikki. New picture added to original post to show the bass in action. As I'm sure you can tell, we're halfway through Bohemian Like You. The bass is a bit of a looker that often attracts compliments when it goes out. Shame about the ageing cushion-smuggler who plays it, however.. Steve
14. I've seen a nice Fender P/J... G&L price reduced to £750.
15. I've been looking for a passive USA Fender P/J with a P neck. Saw this: http://www.thomann.d..._rw_vib_fsr.htm Anybody played one?
16. Let's have another go. New price of £750, since I've found a nice Fender P/J... Trade for something like; Fender MIJ Aerodyne Precision Fender Hot Rod Precision Fender American Deluxe Precision Maybe a non-Fender P/J, as long as it has a P-width neck and a forearm contour. Passive, or passive-switchable.
17. Edit on 18th August; Help! - I've found a nice Fender P/J that I'd like to buy, but I need to sell the G&L first. New price for G&L is £750. I've been resisting this for a while but I'm not playing it so here goes; I have a USA G&L L2000 here, made in 2000. It's an unusual one because it has the body binding. Blueburst + natural binding, maple neck with some light figuring, rosewood board. It's in very good nick overall, but there is a small chip out of the front of the "bottle opener" part of the headstock. There is also some tarnishing on the control knobs. Other than that, no big dings or damage, or electrical issues whatsoever. Some very minor swirling on the back of the body. The bass is completely original. Frets virtually unmarked. Comes with original G&L case (some minor scuffing), tools, owners manual, controls sheet and, importantly, the Certificate of Authenticity. Photos below - let me know if you want some other shots taken. NOW TRADED MIA or MIJ 4-string, passive Fender P/J, with a P neck width and forearm body contour or USA G&L SB-1 or 1st generation SB-2, possibly a L1000, with wide neck (like the L2000) and forearm contour
18. Atlansia Dualist 2-string thingy http://www.atlansia.jp/2ST.FL.NEW.JPG
19. Looks like a couple of Tecamp XS112's are on their way to me (thanks Scooby). If this deal falls through, I'll order the TKS S112's.

21. As an alternative to Scotland, I'd be willing to offer a foster home in Stockport for these, subject to an agreed "admin charge", of course.
22. Ah right, thanks - I understand the "exclusive" comment now.
23. Discreet. Sorry - not quite sure what you mean by; "Those [Purple Chilis] are very exclusive though..."
