I watched Ed Friedland's video on reggae and as a result I was concentrating on the 2 and 4 and was struggling. Interestingly, I was making progress with root, rest, 4, 5 which seems to tie-in with what you and RolandRock are suggesting. For now, I'll practise that.

    Folks, My band's decided to have a go at this reggae version of Summertime: [media]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RAMm_VmOjA[/media] I've not played reggae before, and I'm struggling with it. I can just about play simple roots on the 2 and 4 but anything else, I'm flummoxed. Any advice, please? Steve Edit: original post read "... roots on 1 and 3". I meant 2 and 4.

    Hi Alex, Well, if anybody knows about Blazers - it's you! You describe the tone very well. Overall, it's not as dark and thumpy as my Precision and there have been occasions when, due to the gig room, the P was sounding too thick and boomy. The Blazer saved the day with its brighter tone.     Folks, Here's my MIJ 1982 Ibanez Blazer in Candy Apple Red for sale. As far as I can tell it's all original, with the heart-shaped tuners, mahogany body, brass bridge, knobs, maple neck and fingerboard. There are a few dings round the bottom edge and one has pierced the paintwork, but it's very shallow and only about 1 X 1 cm. There is some discolouration on the edge of the fretboard, but you can't feel anything. I'm quite fussy about dings on the rear of the neck and this bass has an almost perfectly smooth neck following a light wet-and-dry and a little teak oil. Some buckle-rash on the back, but not through the paint. There is some minor lacquer wear under the E string at fret 3, and under the A string at frets 3 and 5 but the fingerboard itself seems untouched. Despite these scuffs and dings, this is not a beat-up bass that is creaking at the joints. Bit of expected mojo? - Yes. "Road-worn"? - No. All electrics are perfectly quiet and the truss-rod has plenty of play in both directions.The tone is a little more middy than my '62 reissue Precision. I had it thoroughly checked, cleaned and setup by my local instrument tech. last month so it's completely good to go. Comes with a very thick Rockbass gigbag.     We're in the same situation with our rock band. Our singer was sacked for being unreliable, smoking dope at rehearsals and gigs, and not contributing to band expenses. That was 8 weeks ago. Manchester's a busy music scene so we thought we'd find a replacement fairly easily. No - we've auditioned 7 people and either they couldn't sing or they were too cock-sure, sometimes both. So, we've had to be a bit creative in our search: - Contact local singing teachers and ask if they have any promising pupils who might be interested. Two teachers put themselves forward. - Contact local agents and ask if any solo singers on their books are looking to sing with a full band. - Write an "anti-ad" and post it on the usual websites under a new user name; "Talentless singer wanted. We are a haphazard group of immature X-Factor wannabes currently making an utter hash of songs by....." - Female singer? Trawling through the muso websites suggests that there are more female singers available than males. I found a singer for my second band - a funk outfit - fairly easily, even though the band wanted a male. Good luck to you. Good, reliable, friendly, audience-aware, non karaoke-expert, help-with-carrying-drums singers are rare indeed. Steve

    OP here, folks. OK - so there may or may not be a "playing-in" period for a new speaker. Perhaps I should have asked something like: "I've just received my second Promethean combo following an apparent speaker failure in the first one after 45 minutes. Are there any sensible precautions I should take to "play in" the new one to help prevent another possible failure, or are such steps unnecessary?"

    Interesting thread on Talkbass where they seem to think that you get 300W from the combo alone, due to some coil switching, which I certainly don't understand. I read this before buying the combo, expecting to get 300W from it on its own. At band rehearsal, we had two acoustic guitars (DI'd into the desk), a singer through the PA and me on bass - no percussion of any type at all. In my naivety, I thought the stated 300W would have been enough for that.

Eude [/quote] We tried it on the floor, on a table, on top of a cajon, in front of a wall, in a corner. Not loud enough anywhere. Perhaps I made the mistake of believing that you get 300W from the single speaker, which woulkd have been fine.

[/quote] Yes - I think it's plenty loud enough for home practice, maybe even for low-volume acoustic jamming. However, the 300W seemed to evaporate into thin air last night at band practice - and that was with no drummer, not even hand percussion. I dunno, maybe I was expecting too much.

    The saga continues: Thomann sent me a replacement. I played it at home for five days then took it to band rehearsal tonight. Two "acoustic" guitars di'd into the desk, one singer through the PA and me on bass. No drums at all. I was on max gain and max master volume, mids up, bass down on the EQ. I was only just keeping up with the band. When the drummer arrived, I didn't even bother with the Promethean - I used my B/F Compact/GK MB500 rig which I had in the car as a backup. At home, I actually preferred the tone of my Eden E10 combo. More bass, and richer than the Promethean which was middy, punchy and barky to my ears. Careful room placement helped, but I was spending a lot of time finding the best place for it - something I never had to do with the Eden. My other half, unprompted, said she preferred the tone of the Eden - "sounds deeper", she said. At band rehearsal, it was immediately apparent that I was going to struggle. I had the Promethean off the floor in a corner and was maxed out on gain, master volume and volume knob on the bass. The combo was clipping - no great surprise - and the bottom E string up to G# was causing the speaker to distort and flap. BEAD tuning would surely have been even worse. And this was with no drummer at all. I'll return the Promethean to Thomann and ask for a full refund. Very disappointing. Steve

    The Promethean P3110 is going back to Thomann. I tried it at band rehearsal tonight and it wasn't loud enough.

    So, with reference to my new Promethean combo, it seems that the sensible and easy thing to do is simply to play it at home practice volume for a few days and then take it to rehearsal. That's if it lasts that long.
