3. Hi, I have my eye on a Stingray clone, mainly for use as a cheap-but-good rehearsal and "beater" bass. It's passive, and that's how I'd keep it. I'm looking for a deep, rich, full tone without it being too thumpy or indistinct, maybe with the option of series/parrallel switching to give some tonal options. Any suggestions for a drop-in replacement pup, please? Steve
4.
When I've sold cameras, I always blur the serial numbers on the public photos on ebay There are many scammers around, and they will use your photos and serial numbers to con others. However, I would give out a partial number to anyone who asked, and probably the full one privately through email.
Well, I have to admit, this whole are of creating clones just hadn't occured to me at all. Where does that leave us with the usefulness of serial numbers when items are being sold?
5. Tab sent to your email. Good luck! Steve
6.
Does anyone know where I could find the tab for the bass section in the song How long by Ace? Here is a YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FIK5F4zRN0Y Thanks in advance (Sorry if this post is in the wrong section, still finding my way around here)
Hi, My band does this song and I've cobbled together a bassline that sounds OK. I have it written down as a messy mix of root notes and tabs. Happy to email a copy to you if you PM me with your email. Steve
7. In their favour, the seller seems happy with cash on collection.
8.
He seems to have cleared the issue up on the link. I wonder if he saw this?
Ahh yes - so he has, up to a point. He still seems reluctant to give the actual serial number, though. Funny that.
9. See this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:X:RTQ:GB:1123 I've asked the seller for the serial number of the bass. The conversation went like this: "Hi - some questions about your bass, please: How old is the bass? Any serious damage (I'm not concerned about cosmetic scrapes or dings)? Is there any chance you could send me a picture of the headstock that clearly shows the serial number, please?" "no serious damage and im not sure how old it is i bought it from a guy in salt lake city u.s. i dont really want to give the serial number out until the item is sold" "Why don’t you want to give out the serial number until after the sale, please? The serial number means that potential buyers can verify the bass’ age and country of manufacture. If a buyer decides to keep that secret, I’d immediately be concerned." "I have nothing to hide but ufortunately as you may well know ebay is full of scammers and if the buyer is not happy when i give them the serial number then i will re list item with no negative feedback" "If you’re not prepared to give the serial number up front, I’m not interested in bidding. I strongly suspect that will be the case for many other people too." "thats fine and your choice" What's going on here, then? Steve
10. I'm feeling rough and fed up. I have an ear infection and I'm pretty deaf right now. I just got this message from a fellow B/Cer: "Hello. Just to say I still have the V4 you sold me. It now has pickup and bridge covers and a set of Jamerson LaBella Deep Talkin' flats which incidentally hardly moved the neck at all, and does sterling duty in a jazz/blues band. Thanks again. cheers. Ian" A pleasure to get that message - gave me a much-needed lift. Good to hear that the old Vintage V4 is being gigged and is earning its keep. Steve
11.
Hey Steve, I hope it clears soon for you, that must be a horrible feeling, can't the doctor 'help' clear the gunge? Best wishes, John
John, Apparently not. He said I could try the head-over-water and menthol thing, although there's no proof that it helps at all, apparently. Band practice tonight, and I'm a bit concerned that my 1 good ear (which is only working 50%) is going to get a battering. I can't smell or taste anything either - it's a bit like sensory deprivation!. Sorry, just feeling a bit low today. Steve
12. I wish I could hear something - anything, really! Right now I can't hear a flaming thing. Hearing in my left hear has been poor for the last 20 years, apparently because of some intravenous antibiotics I had aged 30. Currently I have an ear infection in my right ear and can hear nothing that side. Result - serious overall deafness. Doctors say the infection is getting better and that the "gunge" (Doctor's phrase, not mine) should eventually clear in the next 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, I'm walking around in my own cotton-woolly world unable to hear normal conversation and finding it really difficult to play the bass. Seriously fed up too. Sorry - just feeling a bit low today. Steve

15.
I use flats on my P basses but have put some EB Slinky roundwound strings on my Alembic. To my fingertips, the EBs feel quite rough and harsh so I was wondering if anyone could recommend roundwound strings that feel smoother under the fingers - perhaps because they use narrower gauge wire for the windings? I have TI Jazz rounds and they feel much nicer than the EBs (I think due to narrower gauge windings) but they are too skinny and loose for the 32" scale length (IIRC the E string is 89). So I am looking for something like TI rounds but less skinny. All thoughts gratefully received.
I suppose there's always the half-way house of halfwounds. I swear by Status Hotwire halfwounds. Smooth to the touch (smoother than other halfwounds I've tried), but still giving some useful brightness to my P bass. I don't think my fingers would cope with roundwounds now. Steve
16. I spotted this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ibanez-bass-guitar-/310216051066 It looked pretty suspicious, so I consulted the oracle - Jon/bassassin. He said, (and he has given me the all clear to post this): "It's a complete fake, not an Ibanez, not a Blazer, not Japanese & most definitely not Matsumoku! It's a generic Precision copy (possibly an Encore, from the headstock shape) with a cheap transfer - & the logo's wrong for any 70s or 80s Ibby. I've seen basses badged like this a few times on Ebay but not for a few years so this is maybe one that's been in circulation for a bit. Anyway, proper Ibby Blazers aren't straight P copies like this, the body, scratchplates, headstocks & hardware are quite different, and copy-era Ibanez Precisions have a "spaghetti" logo and are typically sunburst with maple boards. There are other variations but they're not at all common. All 70s & 80s Ibanez basses were made by Fujigen Gakki, post '75 ones have a serial number consisting of a letter denoting the month, two numbers for the year & the remainder are the month's production run. My Blazer is L800470 - making it the 470th instrument made in December 1980. The Guitar Dater project erroneously recognises these serial numbers as being from Terada, so that often turns up in Ebay descriptions. There's no evidence that Matsumoku ever made Ibanez guitars - none have turned up with Mat serials or production traits. Anyway as for age & value? Less than 10 years old (probably a lot less!) and worth about £40!" Jon's an absolute star. Steve
17. A few more to consider here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Squier-by-Fender-Pre...=item3a5a366707 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Squier-Precis...=item45f2823488 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fender-Precision-Bas...=item27b13c0502

Thanks for the link.
21. I've just had an email from the seller. Apparently it's a Tanglewood Canyon 3 and he wants £350 for it.
22. Could it be a Tanglewood Canyon 2? http://www.mveducation.com/invt/38955/
23. Hi, I've seen this advertised: Sorry about the rubbish picture - It's all that was offered in the original ad. Advert description of bass: "Long scale Active bass Canadian Maple & Mahogany Thru Neck Ebony Fingerboard Arched Spalted Maple Body Walnut Veneer & Mahogany back Diecast Black Nickel Bridge Fitted with EAST RIVER pickups Natural Open Pore Finish" Anybody know what it is and how much it might be worth? Thanks, Steve
24. The only other place I can find to buy a new Frank Bello bass is Thomann. Sale price = 799 Euros. The reply from Malta, if I get one, is going to be interesting.
25. I spotted this ad on Ebay. I'm particularly interested in the Frank Bello bass, but there are some other very interesting bargains too: http://www.maltadir.com/mobile/ads/busines...ck-550euro.html I sent a general enquiry email and got this in return: "Hello, Thanks for your mail and interest in buying from us, we have the Fender Guitar in stock for sale in our company brand new factory sealed in its original boxes with complete accessories and 2 years international warranty from the manufacturers and 90 days return policy from our company. Bellow is the quotation for the Fender Guitar Fender Frank Bello bass will cost you 270Euro including shipping fee. I replied asking for: Their UK address Where the bass actually is Pictures of the bass Serial number My thinking here would be if the bass is in the UK, and if photo's duly arrive, and if serial numbers check out, I'd try and go and pick up the bass and hand over cash. Otherwise, I'm deeply suspicious. What does everybody think? Steve
