As an Occupational Psychologist, I used to work in management consultancy and I collected these sorts of euphemisms. We've all heard of rightsizing, downsizing, rebalancing, restructuring and re-engineering. However, my favourite was "No, we're not making people redundant at all - we're in a transitional phase of ongoing negative recruitment". This sort of hiding behind word-nonsense was one of the reasons why I left the whole field of work. I just didn't feel I was being open and honest - and that's one of the things we were exhorting our clients to be with their staff! On the band front, I've recently decided to leave a band because it wasn't for me. Took some doing, but honesty was the best route - be true to yourself because you have to live with yourself in the future. Yes, I could have said I'd found another band or something, but I preferred to be straight and honest about my thoughts, while preserving my and others' dignity. I did have a giggle about some of the ideas for getting rid of somebody! However, I'm fairly certain that some people might actually seriously consider these suggestions about splitting bands and reforming without somebody, suggesting to another band that they pinch somebody from yours, deliberately antagonising somebody so they leave, forcing them to listen to somebody who's better than them to embarrass them into leaving. These are all perfectly awful, aren't they? I wouldn't want any of that to happen to me, so I'm certainly not going to do it to somebody else. Be true to yourself and treat others how you'd like to be treated. Then you'll be able to hold your head up high. Sorry. I'll shut up now. Steve

In terms of neck-width (38mm at the nut), it's very much a J. That's what I'm struggling with, nothing else. The body shape is somewhere between a P and J. In terms of tone, it's more like a J than a P, despite the pup it has. Roll off the tone fully, and you still have piano-like clarity without any of the muddy thump you can get with P's. Tone full-on produces a modern, very bright, clanky (!?) tone for playing stuff by Blink 182. It's more versatile than my p-bass, with clearer tones throughout the spectrum. Lovely sounding thing. Why don't you come and have a go for yourself?! Steve -

Here are the Harmony Central reviews. Mine has the split-coil pup, not the single slanted one, by the way. http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews.../Fury+Bass/10/1 Open to sensible offers around £200... -
I'm fitting a new brass nut to my P-bass. I've removed the old one. What's the best way to secure the new one? Superglue? Epoxy resin (too brittle?)?. All suggestions gratefully received. Thanks, Steve

Hi, Big day this... My tonetastic 1987 MIA Peavey Fury is for sale - see photos. Made in America. I've sent the headstock number to Peavey and they confirm that it "was shipped from Meridian Mississippi where it was made on 24th July 1987". It's completely unmolested and is totally original throughout. In excellent condition - just had a full set-up done and new Hartke lights. There is hardly any damage - 1 or 2 very minor marks here and there and some slight buckle rash - nothing that breaks the paint surface, and certainly nothing that affects the tone, looks or playability. The tone is wonderful: piano-like clarity throughout the tonal range. The tone knob actually does something, and you can get from P-thump (but without the mudiness) right through to bright attack. It matches my G&L Tribute for jazz sounds, but the G&L probably beats it for deep chocolate thump. My bass tutor rated the Fury on par with his Highway 1 Jazz. I'm reluctantly selling this beauty because I have big hands, and I'm struggling to play the Fury's j-neck after the broad open spaces of my G&L's neck. Shame, really - I just love the tone on it. *Sigh* It comes with a basic gig-bag, spare strings and my best wishes - if you like your Jazzes, you'll love this. You're welcome to come round for a cuppa, a chat and a try-out - not a problem at all. It cost me a mere £220 6 months ago, and I'd like to get most of that back if possible. Will post, but would really prefer to hand it over in person. Come and have a look, before I change my mind and keep it... Steve

I've now been offered a job, but I'm scared...

Quick update: I was invited to jam/audition with a rock covers band, which I did. Great guitarist and drummer. But, they were wanting to play Anarchy in the UK in pubs that looked decidedly dodgy. Not for me, really. So, having put in stupid amounts of time to learn loads of songs for the audition, and having been offered the bassist slot, I decided to say "Thanks, but no thanks". I'm still wondering whether that was wise. Then I was approached by somebody else. He and his songwriting partner are putting together a set of electro-folk songs and they were after somebody to write basslines for their songs. I can't do that, I thought - I can belt out a bassline to Rain (The Cult), but writing a bassline?! Anyway, I had a go, and I've come up with some basslines which I'm really rather pleased with. And I enjoyed the whole process of listening to a song, working out the chords, experimenting with roots, 3rds, 5ths and suchlike. I haven't played with the songwriters yet - that's on Friday - but I'm looking forward to it. So, from loud semi-punk to restrained electro-folk in the space of less than a week. Still looking for that good-time, rock/pop covers band... Steve -

Hi, I have a tone-tastic 1987 MIA peavey Fury. It has the most wonderful, bright, clear piano-like tone which I really like. But, it has a skinny J-neck which I struggle with. Yesterday, I tried a new MIA Fender P and secondhand Stingray, but I was a bit disappointed - the P didn't give me the tonal range or clarity I have with my Fury. The Stingray was getting close, but was just too expensive. My Fury has a 4-bolt neck, fitted with a microtilt adjustment thingy in the pocket. 21 frets. Neck pocket measurements (OMG, I've just taken the neck off - my poor bass is now IN BITS): length: 92 mm, front width: 58mm, rear width: 62mm, front depth: 15mm, rear depth: 18mm So, I'm left with the option of replacing the J neck on my Fury with a P (or some other wide) neck. Some questions, please: Will a replacement neck significantly change the tone? I really don't want to change it much (just need more finger-room/greater string spacing) Anybody got something which might fit? Ideally (ha!) something which will drop straight in and I can re-use the existing tuners, bolts, plate, string tree if needs be. All ideas welcome. Steve

I have one of these and it's loud, punchy, woody, and top-notch quality all round.
