1. I live 6 miles from him. I've emailed him to say I'd like to come round for a look at the G&L, because I'm very interested in buying it. What happens if I want it? Don't want to jump a queue, if one is forming. What's the etiquette here? Steve
2.
I have seen/played this Bass and Steve has been quite modest in his description. It is a stunner.
Thank you! It is nice isn't it!? This is one of the very last made in Japan. I think they're made elsewhere now. If only it had a J-neck, I'd keep it in a flash. Oh bugger - I've gone all whimsical about it now. Somebody make me a sensible offer for it quick, before I withdraw it.
3. I managed to speak to Tito Dalmedo today. He remembers making the bass, and he was able to give me a fairly detailed spec. I'm hoping to go and see it this week.
4. Here are the Harmony Central reviews: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...rd+Puncher/10/1 I particularly like the dutch guy's comments! If you're even remotely considering buying an MIM precision, please don't - not before trying my Tokai first!
5. I've spotted this: http://manchester.gumtree.com/manchester/85/28075985.html Anybody have any experience of these basses, please? A google search doesn't produce much. Steve
6. Hi everybody, I have a 6 month old Tokai Hardpuncher P-bass here. It looks exactly like this: http://www.rockfactory.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=gbg-tokhp Blonde body and gold hardware. Only difference is that mine has a matching thumb-rest above the bottom E string. Also, I've just had the stock ceramic pups replaced with some Fender alnico ones of unknown age - they were fitted by Steve Robinson, Manchester Guitar Tech who had intended to use them in a parts-build project. I still have the original pups. Only ever been used for bedroom practice, so in virtually "as new" condition. I've gone over it very carefully and can't find any marks at all. Only imperfection is a slight mark on one of the replacement pup covers. Comes with a cheap gigbag and a new set of Hartke mediums. With the new pups, it has a classic rich, full P-thump sound. Tone control actually does do something, and you can get a brighter, more modern sound easily. My music teacher puts it on a par with his Highway One P-bass for sound quality. I'm in no great rush to get rid of this beauty, but will consider swapping it for something like a MIJ/CIJ Jazz, a Highway One Jazz or maybe a MIA Jazz, with appropriate cash adjustment. I've finally decided to go with a J-neck rather than P-neck after much umming and arring. I don't really want to swap it for something unless I've played the replacement, and somebody is happy having played my Tokai. I'm in Stockport and will gladly drive up to, say, 50 miles to meet somebody - no problem at all. Given its condition, and its upgraded pups, I reckon it's worth £300 ish. If anybody is interested, I'll post pictures - just let me know. Steve
7. Hi, I have a 1987 Peavey Fury, and I need a truss rod adjuster for it. I know that a Gibson adjuster fits. It's a 5/16th nut. Something like this: http://gear1music.com/Ovation-Peghead-Styl...le-GB&id=uk Anybody got a spare gibson truss rod adjuster, or something very similar? Where might I get one, please? Steve Sorted now - Got one from Allparts.
8.
Steve, The CD I sent you has both a Metronome and Drum Machine in the software package. Get it loaded on your lap-top and off you go.
Yes - thank you. I'm not too bad at staying with the beat once I've got going. The problem is counting bars to ensure I'm starting and stopping at the right points, and then losing concentration on the bass-playing techniques as a direct result. Alternatively, I concentrate on my playing and then lose track of where I amm in the song! Jennifer's tips above are useful. Quite simply, the more I practise and the more familiar I become with the songs, then the easier it gets. For people who aren't naturally musical (like me), it probably comes down to hours of practice, time and effort. Dammit. Steve
9.
Hi mate, Since you're in Stockport, you can try the Moolah Rouge. I think it's still called the Moolah...it used to be called the Nut House. Its on the A6 down that little road where 3M paint's is. Top floor of a converted mill. They have a studio, several rooms and you can rent equipment. Equipment isn't bad. Guys who run it are OK. Havn't been for a couple of years though. It used to be about £40 for four hours which isn't too bad. 01614290986 Also, there is the Greenhouse. Another place in Stockport just off either J27 or J1 off the M60. 01614314127. They are a bit cheaper but the rooms are a little duller. I think they were about £32 for four hours.
Thank you - I'll look them up.
10. Hi all, We've been practising in our drummer's home-office, but we now need more room, and his wife needs more peace. Can anybody recommend a rehearsal room in south manchester that's cheap? We might even be able to share costs with somebody who isn't using their facilities as much as they would like.. All suggestions gratefully received. Happy new year, Steve
11. Some really useful advice here. I'm pretty much a beginner, and I'm struggling with my timing. Playing along to Youtube videos at home, I'm not too bad. However, when I play with a drummer and guitarist, it often falls apart. This mainly because I'm concentrating on keeping the beat, but then find it really hard to count the bars to start, stop, just play roots, play the bridge, etc at the right points. We don't have a singer yet, and I'm hoping that this will be the missing link. That said, I'm fully aware that it's me and the drummmer who should be the core of the song. Any advice to stop my irritation growing, please? Steve
12. A music stand that's solid enough not to wobble about when I tap my feet. Two "Boston" guitar stands - chunky and solid, but possibly not quite tall enough for basses. Still no sign of the much-needed box of bass-playing talent, sadly.
13.
Oo blimey, don't remember. It ain't a huge place, but I imagine said night was in the week rather than Sat or Sun. Also, there was a top independent record shop on Bangor high street (Stryd Fawr?) which would likely have Wanted ads in the window (guy who worked there was a drummer too), but I imagine it's now a Tesco Express or sumfink. Feels like yesterday but is half me life ago :*( You could also pop into Griffiths Audio Visual nearby and ask Brian, if he's in. Another drummer, he's in league with others in the Gogledd Cymru music scene, might be able to help you out. His shop is probably another Tesco Express now too.
Thanks for all these suggestions. As it turned out, there was a live band playing in the Bold Inn in Beaumaris on Friday. They played a good-time mix of folk-rock in english and welsh. Clearly built around a pretty useful guitarist who wanted to be in Rainbow, they rocked the house well. I can only remember 1 song, which seemed to revolve around the shouting-out of "Ffestiniog". I only managed to say a very brief "thanks" to the bassist before we left. A good night. We did have a quick poke round Bangor, but I don't recall any music shops, sadly.
14.
Them idlers at the University will probably provide some opportunities. And there was an open-mike night at a pub in Beaumaris that might be good for making contacts. But that was er 18 years ago
Which pub? We're staying in Beaumaris this weekend...
15.
Ok, if you´re still looking for a P/J, let me recommend the Yamaha BB414. Quality bass, excellent sound and workmanship. Much better than"half decent".
I completely agree. My first ever bass was a BB404 - brilliant. Sold it when I bought my Tokai Hardpuncher P-bass. Actually, I'm having some 1970's Fender pups put into the Tokai in an effort to move it a little more towards a J tone, while retaining it's P bottom.
16. Never believe what's on a website! I rang them. Price is £290 with Seymour Duncan quarter-pounders, £214 with stock Peavey pups. Thought it looked a good deal... Steve
17.
I have replied to your PM.
Your PM received. Thank you.
18.
One for sale on here : http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...l=peavey+zodiac
Yes - I'd seen this. It appears not to have the S/D Quarter Pounders, however, which surely would be pretty desirable over the stock Peavey pups?
19. Hi, I'm still searching for a half-decent P/J bass. The G&L SB-2 is a possibility. I've just come across this: http://www.jbsmusic.co.uk/view/1517/ Peavey Zodiac DE Scorpio with solid alder body and Seymour Duncan quarter pounders. New for £214, including delivery. I'm a bit of a fan of Peaveys - I have an '87 Fury which is a storming J bass. All opinions of the Zodiac DE scorpio gratefully received. Thanks, Steve
20.
I'll speak to my mate who is from Anglesey. (he's away at the mo) There is a bit of a music scene in the area although I dont know how vibrant it is. Worth thinking about that Bangor is just over the bridge from there also. check out http://www.linktowales.co.uk which has a lot of north wales musicians frequenting it.
Thank you - I'll ceratinly be willing to travel to Caernavon, Bangor, Y Felinheli, Beddgelert, Pwllheli, Abersoch, Criccieth. I'll check out the link you sent me.
21. Not quite sure which forum to post this, but here goes anyway. I'm considering a move to Anglesey soon. Can anybody tell me about the opportunities for a realtively inexperienced but mad-keen bass player in Anglesey/North Wales, please? Ideal would be a pub covers band of some description. Are there any well-known venues in Anglesey for pub-rock/classic rock music? Don't want to move there only to find there's nobody tp jam/play/rehearse with... Steve
22.
PM sent mate.
Thanks. Reply sent.
23.
I've got a G&L Tribute SB2 and love it. Really solid sounding bass that can sit well in a bandmix. Took me a while to find the right strings as the pickups are very hot and it can sound a bit trebly. Once I got used to it however and put nickelwound strings on, I was really glad I got it. Unfortunately, I've developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and for some strange reason my other basses seem easier to play now so I tend to leave it at home when gigging.
Oh dear - I'm sorry to hear about your CTS difficulties. At least it hasn't stopped you playing everything. If you're not playing your SB2 and you want to sell it or trade it, please drop me a PM. Regards, Steve
24. Hi, I have a G&L SB-2 bass in my sights. Decsribed as "the cheap version of the Tribute L200". Apparently the SB-2 has a J-profile neck. I've looked at the Harmony Central reviews which seem pretty positive. Any body got one? All comments on the tone and playability most welcome. Thanks, Steve
