In a bass with a high output, if the volume is set lower, say about half way can this replicate the tone of a lower output bass? Or will it still have a slightly compressed tone typical of a hot pickup?

What wood are Westfields made of?

You gonna put some flats on that and join a jazz trio
I don't suppose anyone knows what year Vintage started using Wilkinson hardware? Only, I've got a VS6 (their SG copy) which must be about 10 years old now. I suspect the hardware is not Wilkinson (can't see any logo or decal on the p/ups), and I've toyed with the idea of upgrading the pickups - would I be correct in assuming that a pair of Wilkinsons* would be a good replacement? *not a euphemism
I think it was around 2009 from checking google. 10 years old it will most certainly not be Wilkinson unfortunately. Wilkinson pickups are definitely worth a punt. I bought a £50 plywood telecaster last year and put some Wilkinson pickups in and the difference was definitely noticeable. Actually sounds like more like tele now rather than a £50 plywood guitar!
£38 off ebay, I had to replace a pot ,strings and set it up. lives in my kitchen .
Haha, it was yours I saw then. Nice. Is the tort standard or did you add it?

I decided not to bother in the end on this bass. I may still get a cheap knockabout bass and sell others but not in a rush. I have heard lots of good things about the Westfield p, I do like the black and maple one. Seen someone put a tort pickguard on and it looked decent.

Bought a Zoom B2 multi - FX from, good price and I am happy with the unit. He and gave a good demo of what it could do. Pleasure to deal with. Cheers

Enjoying reading this thread, especially as I may be acquiring one of these to play about with. I needs a project! -
Sold my Behringer Bass V-amp to Bobby this evening. Pleasure to deal with, hassle free transaction. Cheers!

Just had a look at that thread, great work. Did you get the SP3's in? was there much of a difference sound wise? The replacement of tuners was that as much of a ballache as what it looked? If I was to go down that route I have no angle grinder!

Had another look today and a play and it is genuinely a good instrument. Plays as well as my Yammy BB414 (so if in the real world it sounds decent too, I wont have any qualms in shifting the Yammy on in favour of making this my main bass) The shop owner is interested in a trade for a Tele copy I've got (but maybe a couple of quid his way) Can anyone help date it with the serial number? CY20710636 (crafted in China) It has 20th anniversary on the neck plate, don't know if this makes it a particular model or not.

I actually had a play on it last week when I spotted it.Strings were dead, but neck was straight and the action was low. Only issue is that its red, I'm not a massive fan of red guitars but I could live with it. Maybe a prettier pickguard could help its cause.

Cool. Seriously considering selling my two basses in favour of a decent cheapo one as my involvement in playing live/recording is dwindling so the money raised from others can be diverted elsewhere! I seriously think all I need is a p bass of some description for the sound I want.

Seen one of these in a bric - a brac shop near where I work for £60. Got a split in pickguard and and ding near jack but all in working order. I know they are bottom rung in Squier line up but are they actually ok? Any real world experience of using it for rehearsing / demo recording?

I agree with all that definitely. I remember when I got my replacement to my Encore, (a 1988 5 string Yamaha RBX series) thinking that even though it was technically a better bass it didn't seem to sound as good recorded and it took me a long time to get a workable recording tone from it. True, this bass went on to become my workhorse bass for the next 12 years but listening back to the early recordings using the Encore, this is a clear winner. I think I'm going to try source the same era encore if I can (for nostalgic purposes!) I'm sure plenty of charity shops around the country should have one kicking about!
Fender style ones were the earliest, made in India. They had another typical feature - square, boxy string trees instead of the disc shaped ones. I don't care too much about later generations, but I believe those made by Vintage have similar headstock shape that Vintages have.
Cool, the one in this shop must have been a pre Wilkinson put post Indian era. Still it was lovely though, everything tightly screwed in and nice finish on neck
-
Does anyone know what era each headstock represents? Eg the latest shape when did they start using that? I think when I had mine it looked more like a Fender style one.
What sort of Ibanez?
Ibanez RG 270 DX Edit - decided not to go ahead anyway as I'm after a Telecaster style guitar really.

Someone is interested in swapping my unused Ibanez guitar for a Vintage les Paul copy. Now, if it were the current range with the Wilkinson pickups I'd be all over it. But the one on questions is an older version from late 90s so non Wilkinson pickups or hardware. Anyone know if they are still any good for what they are or avoid?

I'm having serious GAS for an Encore p-bass! Saw one in a random bric - a brac shop near where I work today , in sunburst and I had a play. This was a fine example of an Encore bass if ever there was one - mint condition, unsure of the era or year, but was pre-Wilkinson I think. Although the headstock looks similar to the latest shape. The neck believe it or not was just lovely. Very smooth and the grain on maple was very nice, and the bridge looked really substantial, and not a typical cheap bridge. Definitely needs a tweak of the rod to correct relief but seriously considering making an offer. Price is a bit high for an Encore, (although arguably the way it plays probably worth it) but may see if he'll swap it for a an acoustic. Plugged in it it does exactly what it says on the tin (albeit through the small practice amp the guy had in!).

I wonder if these Indian Encores are better than the newer blaster series with the Wilkinson pickups? Pre Wilkinson encores may be more sought after following this thread!

I remember seeing a maverick bass in gumtree not so long ago. Maverick were same people that make fret king iirc. Trevor Wilkinson had a lot to do with design. I had a maverick x1 guitar - very metal!
