1. VBA400 owner here. Cant say ive played many amps for comparison, but I get along with it! HEAVY AS sh*t THOUGH! head in the flight case is pushing 7 stone. But I do love the full valve, just dont get that tone with solid states (IMHO, baring in mind I bet ive only played 4-5 amps mainly Ashdown and a old battered trace in Yellow Arch practice rooms) if anyones knocking round my area (Doncaster) and fancys a play and a cup of tea, your more then welcome to try it out. I will probably wanna bash on your bass tho, but I have a few too
 2. What only 1 person mentions Musicman??? Musicman for sure, I have a thing for anything musicman, havent picked up a bad one yet, love the tone, love the build quality (for a mass produced product) the forum is great. 'ray+Bongo+Stirlin+Sabre+25th Anniversary+er... which was the griphite necked one? either way, they dont have a bass past or new I wouldnt buy if the price was right. yes... even the new Big Al monstrosity!
 3. subscribed.... I may have to delete my bass vids off youtube now tho, they are years old and im shockingly bad.
 4.
Thread HiJack! Any idea how P-like the Delano P pup is?
maybe try one of these out??
 5.
Hey man, there's a load of options out there. But I'd be tempted to keep the pickup selection separate from the EQ. Your idea with the switchable MM to single coil and a single coil up front would work fine, with a passive vol, pan and tone, then have an active EQ which you could turn on and off. This would give you your active Ray sound with a passive J Bass sound, but still give you the option of running the J Bass sound active and the Ray sound passive, if you want to. Cheers, Eude
Hey Eude cheers for your reply mate. its definatly something worth concidering, let me get this right in my head. passive vol, tone, balance, single coil switch, then another switch to turn on the active 3 eq? I have a feeling all those options will confuse the hell out of me lol, im confused just saying it. Maybe if I can get my head around it a little more id understand. I wanna try and keep it as simle as possible if I can, I had a 4eq 5HS bongo and that was over my head, had just the humbucker on pretty much 1 eq setting its whole life then took me half an hour to find a decent jazz tone when I needed it. im not much of a twiddler to say the least. Would this work? and where would my problems be with this set up (if its possible) what would I be missing? (except having a HS config, which I was never keen on with my Bongo anyways) 3eq humbucker, a switch turns the humbucker into a single coil passive jazz pick up and also switches on the neck pickup. heard on the Delano site the treble of the 3 eq then turns into the tone nob for the Jazz set up, and then I just need another nob for pan. like this I guess? Thinking the above pickups rather then these with a single one of these Would I be right in saying id get more of a Passive Fender Jazz tone with the ones I chose rather then these at the bottom? Also, as the hybrid is half and half, would the 'ray sound suffer for it?
 6.
Electro stock Sandbergs if you did fancy giving one a bash Chris
Just got back from Electro, played a 5er with coil switch (5 string version of the pic you posted), and a 4er without the switch, just a blend between the pickups. the 5er was definatly better tone wise, I dailed in a pretty decent 'ray sound but it lacked the jazz sound I was after, the 4 string was ok I guess, but the MM tone was a bit lacking meat, and again the jazz wasnt up to scratch. played about with them for just over an hour to try and get the feel for them. noob question alert... how much diff would it make if I got the hybrid instead of the full humbucker, with a regular J pickup with 8 poles instead of the 4 poled "half" humbucker? im guessing that would help get the jazz tone I want? Basically, I want 2 things. just humbucker on its own for a meaty 'ray sound (HS/HH never works for me with musicmans) but then switch to a warm fender jazz sound playing over the neck pup. And hopefully be able to switch between the 2 without having to mess about turning loads of nobs and flicking loads of switches to do it. Maybe 3eq humbucker, switch to passive which makes the humbucker single coil and seperate nob for ballance + tone when its a jazz? that way I could pre set the bass up and wouldnt have to twiddle between songs much. or am I being crazy? im not sure whats possible with EQ so ill leave it to you guys to rip me to bits about it and tell me why im wrong.
 7.
Those Delano's are fantastic. I've got them fitted to my Shuker here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=shuker+porn In active mode, the bridge pickup gives a very good Stingray tone (I prefer it to my real 'ray!). In passive mode, it reverts to single coil, giving a great passive Jazz sound. Jon fitted them to mine with a Delano hybrid EQ, and I can't speak highly enough of the tone. You really can get proper Stingray and Jazz tones from them
id kick myself if I didnt ask this, what if I wanted an active jazz tone?
 8.
Yum, love that bass. There's only two of them, one owned by mr levin himself and the other by a man in sweden, so yours should be uber special too
why does the top horn look raised? is it just cam-foolary?
 9.
...or buy a Stingray, even?
Ive got one, well ive got one for sale actually.
 10.
Be cheaper to buy a Jazz body, and stick the ray parts and the badass on?
Probably would be cheeper, but just wouldnt really be the same. im pretty set on getting one made now, its just trying to figure out the small details of it.
 11.
Well...that is a Fender... for all intents and purposes, isn't it? It's the same shape and basic design.
well in essence yeah, I like Jazz basses, the body etc, neck is a little too slim for me so im going for more of a 'ray neck. But Fenders dont tick any other boxes for me, I think the bridges are lame and they dont excite me when I pick them up, a lot of the ones in shops ive played are terrible, you get the odd sweet one but playing all the others just brings down the Fender name IMHO. In essence if I had a Fender Jazz body, 'ray pickups and electronics, 'ray neck, badass bridge. id be more then happy. but as I cant have that, custom it is. PLus I like pretty things and spending money.
 12.
That looks good. I wouldn't order yet, though, and I'd take FarOn's advice and do a bit more research first into your likes and dislikes. Plus there are numerous Fenders in shops. Do you really want a posh custom one?
I dont like Fenders so yes! Ive played a fair few basses over the years, owned a few med/high end basses too so i know roughly what im after. plus i guess it helps i but a fretless bass together to my spec too.
 13.
Stingray: great looks and sound but you need to lose some weight.
Mines 8.8lb.
 14. Made a mock up of how it'd roughly look like, my MS paint skills are less then desirable. thats a badass bridge and I tried to make the pickups look like the Delano's If anyone is good with paint, I wouldnt mind seeing what it looks like in red, or maybe silver?
 15.
Seriously, I'd wouldn't consider buying anything until you think about what you like and dislike in a bass. It's a hell of a lot of money to part with, if you're left with an instrument that doesn't suit you or is poorly thought out you'll be kicking yourself. Do some research. Find out what sounds like what, not just in your practice room but when your out gigging too. I've had some fab 'bedroom' basses that were appalling when played live. I've been playing since I was 19 and it's only now at 36 I've started considering getting a custom bass, just purely because I know what neck shape I like, what pickups I like, what types of wood I like. It's a very long slow learning curve, honestly.
In all honesty, im a sh*t bassist, I know sod all about tone and what things sound like live. TBH ive never played live apart from a little 10-15min playing about on stage in an intival of someone elses gig. ive got 2 bands on the go but both need a singer. I know what I like to look at, and I know what it'd roughly like it to sounds like. But Im only 25 and I earn a shitload so why not endulge while I can?? I work all over the country and take my basses with me to sit in my hotel rooms (which I have to pay for unfortunatly) I know how id like it to look, ive done some research cause altho my job is hard ( Financial Contractor) I have a lot of spare time to look about, and I know I love MM 'rays, and I love the feel of the Modulus (not a fan of the tone) but I want something a little special. Ive had a lot of time to play a LOT of basses and I know I dislike lakland. Modulus is amazing, Wals are ok, fender is ok, MM is perfect, warwicks are HORRIBLE.
 16. Modulus, Perfect neck, looks amazing, doesnt give you the tone you would expect and enjoy. I do like what you say about the ray tho, it is the perfect bass. just wish they had the Modulus neck.
 17.
I played Eude's Shuker jazz at the Bassbash in Moffat. It's a great bass and the 33" scale makes it criminally easy to get around on. Sounds good as well. I wouldn't dismiss the 33" scale right away, if Eudes bass is anything to go by the scale length doesn't effect the sound. Before anyone jumps on this point, I know scale length does make a difference, but on that particular J style bass the 33" scale felt good and sounded good as well.
Does scale change the tone?, and (sorry for the noob comment) but what does 33 mean? what a noramal jazz scale? id be willing to drive to Eudes for a play tbh, if im shelling out for a dream bass id want it to be a dream, plus while im up there there is an Amazing skatepark near newcastle id like to ride or I could stay with danny calow from death skateboards in Darlington for a bit of a sesh.
 18. thats fantastic! makes me wanna drive over and play it!
 19.
That would be a Corvette $$ ! Wish I still had mine!
I remember playing yours, thats the first time ive enjoyed a warwick!, altho the neck profile on warwicks are horrible imho.
 20. Bumpo, may need to go soon as im pricing up a Shuker
 21. crap, which ones? £35 or £50 ones at the top of the page of strings direct? I thought elixers were expensive! lol
 22.
I use either: Stringbusters (out of stock at mo') http://www.stringbusters.com/frameset.asp?...INGS/THOMASTIK/ or Stringsdirect http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/strings/bass_guitar/thomastik
lol, I saw them on stringsdirect but didnt realise they were Thomastik, I was looking for TI... im such an Utter noob!
