So after the suggestions here I did some research and spoke to a couple of dealers. The RCF ART310A is very highly regarded out there, so I've ordered a pair. Price seems to have gone up a bit (£409 each was the best I found) but I did get the zip up bags thrown in, and the RRP on those is around £70. Power and SPL is very similar to the SRM450's, whereas the SRM350 is down on power and SPL. I just need to decide now whether to keep the SRM450's as backup, or sell them! I also found out the relationship between Mackie and RCF. RCF designed and built the original SRM450 for Mackie. Mackie bought RCF. Mackie 'absorbed' the designs. Mackie then put RCF on the market, and a management buyout sorted it. Mackie moved production of the SRM's to China. dB Technolgies is now a sister company of RCF. Just in case anyone wanted to know! Cheers Martin
The RCF ART310A ("A" for active - note there is a cheaper passive version) is a 350 Watt speaker with a 10 inch drive. This is more equivalent to the Mackie SRM350 (which is also available now in a lighter "V2" version). Both units are very high quality, lighter and cheaper than the SRM450. They might be worth considering. http://www.mackie.com/products/srm350v2/ http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/8711...ives-pair-.html
Thanks for your answers guys. Aren't RCF associated with Mackie? I have a feeling they design or manufacture the drive units for Mackie. The RCF310A's look like they are discontinued, although there is still some stock around. EDIT *** not discontinued, apparently their most popular speaker *** I also looked at the SRM350 V2, but wasn't sure I'd get the same sound and coverage as with an SRM450 (or V2). Another option would be to keep the 450's and buy a pair of RCF310A's or SRM350 V2's for smaller gigs. I could use them as monitors for larger gigs! Oh dear, yet more gear to cart around

Hi All, I'm hoping for some opinions on Mackie gear here. I currently use a pair of SRM450's with a mackie CFX12 MK2 desk. I'm happy with the sound. But as I've just updated my bass rig to get it smaller and lighter, I'm thinking about doing something similar with the PA. Best option would be to get someone else to provide it but as that won't happen I'm looking at alternatives to the SRM450. One option is the SRM450 V2 - each cab is 40 lbs (rather than 52 lbs for the 450 V1). Does anyone out there have experience of the V2 - i.e. is the weight saving noticeable? (I'm sure it is), is the sound the same? (or better?) Or are there any other active cabs at 400 watts rms that are 40 lbs or less and sound as good or better than the SRM450 without pushing the price up too high? Cheers Martin

my 2 cents worth: I use a TU2 which I'm kind of happy with, to my ear I still don't always 'feel' in tune. Sunday night at a gig my pedal board power supply didn't work, and there's no battery in the TU2. So I got an A from the keyboard player, and tuned up to the A using 5th and 7th fret harmonics. I felt REALLY uncomfortable all night, although when ever I asked my wife in the audience, she said she couldn't hear anything out of tune, and I trust her judgement. It was interesting to read much earlier in this thread why that's a no-no way to tune - and hopefully I'll never have to do it again. I don't have perfect pitch, but I do have very good relative pitch, and I'm always nagging the guitarists to check their tuning, even when they've just done it - I think it's more an intonation problem on their instruments. I'm definitely going to try out a strobo-stomp. I suspect as many have said, the audience won't notice any difference. But I'm sure I will, both mentally (I know it's right) and aurally.

We use a pair of mackie srm450's with a mackie cfx12 mk2 mixer. I'm very happy with the sound, ease of use etc. We can go pretty loud before feedback sets in. The old style SRM450's can be bought new with bags for around £800 a pair if you hunt around, and the desk I paid £350 for. I also have an Allen and Heath mixer which i love, but it's a bit too big for pub venues. If I could justify it I'd buy A fohn system (I think that's spelt right) - I've heard one several times and just love it.
Bought a Peavey 450Max bass amp from Martin. I live close to him and he was happy for me to pick up straight away and to give the amp a tryout with the offer of my money back if not as described. Didnt need to take up this offer as the amp was in great condition and performed as expected. Would not hesitate the buy from again, unfortunately the EBS neo 2 x 10 is out of price range at the moment!
Thanks Simon, good to meet the other day. Hope your new Band project goes well.

Hi John, You should use a contact adhesive. Evostick, either in a tin or spray, will do it. You need to put a coat on the board and a coat on the carpet, then leave until touch dry, then put them together. It never seems to work properly if you put the glue on one side and then put the two parts together. Cheers Martin
I'd like some clues as to how to get the festival gigs. I have a new project that will work well in festivals but no track record as a band - plenty of individual milage though, some festival related but no experience getting the gigs Any guides, clues, pointers, ideas, Welsh contacts? TIA
+1 for the gloucestershire area!

None booked yet. We've been trying to get into local beer festivals. I've researched them, found websites and sent out emails (no phone numbers given) but haven't had any response.
I've never ever heard an EBS rig, so I really couldn't comment. The Tech cabs have quite a compressed sound. They never sound to harsh or peaky, even with the horn voicing set to aggressive. I'm in Chessington, KT9. Is your EBS 4 or 8 Ohm?
4 ohm - the F1 is 500 watts into 4ohms
-
Hi, I'm interested. I use a MarkBass F1 with an EBS Neo212. Happy with the sound etc, but the extra height and smaller width of the Tech is appealing - it moves the sound a bit closer to my ears! Anyone have any thoughts on how the sound of the Tech would compare with my EBS? Oh, and whereabouts are you bassbloke? Cheers Martin

I know, spooky isn't it? We were the first band to have a website, although the other band existed when we chose our name. Some great advice there, I'll get updating. I'll also read through all the posts (must admit I gave up earlier today) and PM you with my targets. We took the photo's at Gloucester airport, where there are a few old planes lying around. Many thanks Martin

Hi Si, Would you be kind enough to pass comment on my band's website please? www.jacksborohighway.co.uk I know very little about website design, I've just managed to cobble a few together. Cheers Martin
