hi

HI - Good name !!! Nugget
2.
That F hole looks very reminiscent of Dingwall
mmmm...'inspired by' but turned into a wave (well kinda in my twisted imagination).....
3.
Thanks for the generous offer Dave, I'd love to but realistically I wouldn't have a clue how to go about building and fretting a neck from scratch! Do you do lessons?
I wish I had time !!!!
4.
Awesome stuff Dave, the fretwork and dots look great! Makes me want to build one myself..... wish I had the facilities to have a go! I'm an ex-carpenter, so I've got some skills, but not the necessary equipment or the money to buy any! Ah well, maybe I'll just have to consider a Firecreek custom.........
Ta Oli - I've got the space and (most of) the tools plus I'm only 20 miles away, pop round and make one here!!! See ya in a couple of weeks at the west mids Bash Bash..... PLUG.....
5. Weekly Update - Still going to plan, frets and top dots fitted Got a weekend of tidying it all up and fetteling and then time to spray it up. Probably wont look too different now until after finishing - so will try and update in a few weeks when hopefully it'll be looking good
6. If you can get it to Worcester I'll do it for free
7. Hi - not experience that before, but if the pickup keeps getting higher then the screws must be coming undone, most likely the vibration making them unwind. I would try and fill the screw holes to make the screws tighter. Good luck
8. It's pretty easy if you've got a router with template router bit or a template guide. Make a templete, clamp it securely to the body and route it out. Make another template a few mm wider than the main cavity and route the recess for the cover 2mm deep Make sure that the template can't move when routing...... If you havent got a router (or cant borrow one) then it's time consuming and results can be messy....
9.
Dont envy you working with that Wenge !! Looking fantastic though .....
Thanks - I got a load of wenge, wish I didnt...I keep looking at it thinking 'hope I never have to use that again' The splintering is a total pain in the arse , the toxic splinters I've almost become immune to but the way it screws my lungs up isnt funny - It's like I've smoked 60 fags in 5 mins!! even with a good (but not good enough) dust mask... Oli - It'll be interesting to see how it compares to your lovely Sandbergs..... One month and 2 days to deadline - told the wife no shopping this weekend! Thanks Dave
10. Hi I'm far from expert on the bass (after quite a few years) but play live twice a week with a band. I totally agree with keep it simple - I've seen quite a few technically amazing bass players uterly ruin the overall sound of a band with overplaying! I'm sure I'll get slated here for saying that...... Technique is more important than kit - Concentrate on damping (left and right hand) to create punch and note definition. Playing bass well isn't easy and very different to techniques used compared to guitar playing. Coming from playing guitar to bass I'd recomend a couple of lessons to get the basic techniques down. Welcome Dave
11. Hi - Not enought time this weekend to get a whole load done... why does the wife think shopping is more important?? Headstock is shaped, it's like a fat tele headstock with 3+2 arrangement with matching walnut cap. Got the body edges rounded and a started on profiling the neck. Hopefullt get a little more time next weekend as it's not long till the West Mids bass bash. Next weekends plan is to get neck and fretboard profiled and frets pushed in. Couple more weekends tweeking here and there and then time to spray... should just be done on schedule for 27th Nov (fingers crossed) Ta Dave
12. I'm in central london tomorow and wednesday, but staying in Hemel, I drive past Bristol quite often. Where are you tomorrow night wayne??
13.
I've put on in for you.
Any chance you can do it on mine also
14.
Awesome, can't wait! Just better try to remember how to play now........ Looking forward to trying one of Dave's (Nugget) Firecreek basses too!
http://basschat.co.uk/topic/157452-firecreek-thinline-p5-wengewalnut/page__gopid__1406273 It's on target to be ready for the 27th, glad it's still a few weeks away!!
15. Managed to get a bit done this weekend - somehow avoided the gardening again...... Top on, F hole cut, pickup cavity routed Control cavity routed, Wenge is looking sweet around the belly cutout..... Hopefully get the headstock done next weekend Ta Dave

18.
Hi Dave I just wondered what lacewood is like to work with? I think it is a lovely looking wood (I have a lacewood bass), I imagine it is a bit like mahogany, but does the lighter grain cut differently? BTW, I think the inset fingerboard is a cracking idea, I've not seen it before. Cheers Jules
Hi Jules It's really nice the grain can pull out a little when run through the thicknesser but it's never any more than 0.5mm so easy to sand out later. Very stable, and finsihes great. I've got quite a bit of lacewod, if you're ever passing Worcester you can have some for free to try out Ta Dave
19. The wenge is beautiful but a total bugger to work with!! I like bound fretboards and was trying to think of something different from the normal binding that wasn't over the top and thought this might look cool, I think it look better in real life. The bass is meant to be not to flash and the inlay FB is quite subtle (in my eyes..) Yes the end of the fretboard is angled after the 21st fret and will slope down to end flush with the walnut top - bit like some of the sei basses. Ta Dave
20.
Be interesting to watch this come together. Are you hollowing it out?
Yes, it will help keep the weight down a bit!! but still isnt going to be a lightweight....
21. Had a week off work so started on a 5 string thinline P bass this week through neck with fretboard inlayed into neck Neck - Wenge / Maple Fretboard - Lacewood Body - Wenge Top - Walnut EMG P pickup It's just roughed out at the moment but thought I'd upload some pix anyway Front Back Inlayed fretboard Walnut top
22. I'd be up for it - Based in worcester but could travel about a bit. I think I could get a village hall just 5 minutes off M5 J7 (worcester south junction) if it's not too far for all to travel, its very large got a canteen area for coffee making etc, isolated so noise isnt an issue, loads of parking - and would be very cheap. Dave
23. Sold my status neck to Poorcow - great communications, very quick payment - it doesnt get any better. Thanks Cham
24.
Pictures!
Pix will be up in a day or 2, not home until tomorrow night. thanks for all the PMs and interest. Dave
