1. Thanks for response guys. F*ck the looks, I'll stick with my tried and trusted Musicman that plays like a dream.
2. I currently play in a Free tribute band and my gear is a Musicman through a Markbass rig 2x10 plus 1x15. The band is now really started to take off and the guys in the band are now looking at the retro look in terms of stage appearance ie clothing and equipment, the hair is long gone and wigs are totally out of the question. They suggested I source an old bass amp and cabinet (heavy-hernia inducing) to which I have bluntly refused to do, I am seriously considering an SG bass in Cherry but are not willing to pay Gibson prices. I have seen Epiphone long scale SG basses advertised for £199 new which I feel will look correct without too much investment, but I'm not sure of the sound quality. Do any of you folks out there have any experience of these basses?

Stealer Gig

Stealer (Free Tribute) will be playing at Goodbarns Yard, Peterborough this Saturday 18th April. Music starts at approx 9.00pm. Visit My Website
4. I find just using your fingers is messy. I tend to usually use a knife and fork.
5.
I know of a Free tribute band who gave out excerpts of "Free Live" as their demo. They never had any trouble getting gigs... (just make sure your promoter isn't a Free nut)
Those guys must be taking the piss. Our Free tribute act "Stealer" wouldn't dream of doing anything like that, you should have complete confidence in your musical ability as a band. Visit My Website We always do our demo's as a live take with no overdubbing etc, it gives the promoter/venue an honest sample of what the band actually sounds like. We are about to go into a studio for two days to record some newer tracks for our demo CD. We find that the majority of venues/promoters do require a demo prior to booking.
6.
Nice one Steve! Where abouts is the gig? Cheers! Nick (say hi to Russ and Lee)
Hi Nick, The Park Venue, Peterborough Friday 15th May I didn't know you knew Russ as well as knowing Lee.
7. I'm feeling really great at the moment due to some good news about a forthcoming gig that has been confirmed. My band "Stealer" have been confirmed as support slot to my musical heroes from my late teens (I'm over fifty) the great WISHBONE ASH featuring Andy Powell. WHOOPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
8.
Doherty Doherty Doherty There is no "C" in Doherty Thanks
There is - it's called CANNABIS
9.
I find both annoying now, and i'm 18. They (and kerrang) are as fake as michael jackson's nose, and i wouldn't piss on anyone that works for them if they were on fire (except fearne cotton, she's pretty hot)
Fearne Cotton needs a good meal, she is beginning to look like the rest of those freaks on the fashion catwalks that portray themselves as women. She's not quite there yet, but she's heading that way. Ah, dickhead Docherty used to go out with one of those catwalk freaks, Kate Moss.
10.
That's what pop stars are for. I think Pete Doherty's great value entertainment, personally. I wouldn't want him on my pub quiz team or as my climbing buddy or whatever, but as a pop star he's just right. I don't understand why people get so angry with him. It's like getting angry at the animals in the zoo.
Docherty is a talentless tw*t.
11. Attended and performed by the usual bunch of dickheads who think swearing and making totally ridiculous comments when receiving their awards is really clever. NOT Big chief dickhead (Pete Docherty) obviously thought it was "cool" to sit there smoking, somebody should have rammed the fag up his ar*e. They also brought out the local looney in the form of Grace Jones, why doesn't that woman grow up? She's only best known for slapping the chatshow host Russell Harty with her handbag many years ago. Elbow started the show and were very good, from then on it went quickly downhill. It should be renamed the NME INDIE AWARDS.
12. Currently working on for the rehearsal on Sunday - New Years Day U2 Barracuda Heart What is and what should never be Led Zep
13. Our current line consists of vocalist, guitarist, keyboards, bass and drums. We have a very structured set list but have enough songs without the keyboard being a major factor and can still actually go out with an alternative set (guitar based) if the keyboard man cannot make it. Any other member who is not available then the gig does not get booked, deps certainly would not gel enough to keep the band tight.
14. Best of luck matey. To learn that lot in a week is a bit much, I think the rest of your new band need a reality check to assume someone can learn that lot in a week. Maybe I'm underestimating your talent? Do you have a day job or have the luxury of learning new tunes all day long? Enjoy your gig on Friday.
15. Spirit of Radio by Rush. Man, this tune is really pushing my playing ability.
16. Listen to some Allman Brothers albums, Eat a Peach, Live at The Filmore etc. Awesome quality blues with some nice jazzy chords thrown in and some unusual time signatures. Allman Bros
17. In no particular order- John McLoughlin ........Mahavishnu Orchestra Warren Haynes.......Government Mule/Allman Bros Duane Allman......Allman Bros Vernon Reid..........Living Colour Neil Schon........Journey Jeff Skunk Baxter.........Steely Dan/Doobie Bros Leslie West....Mountain Paul Kossoff........Free Robin Trower Stevie Ray Vaughan
18. Play in our band called Stealer. The whole set is devoted to the music of 60's / 70's blues rock icons Free. www.myspace.com/stealer1 Man, I just love playing Andy Fraser's basslines.
19.
Ha ha Rush are the most pretentious band in the world with there heads firmly in there arses.
If highly skilled musicians = pretentious, I'm happy with that. The majority of us musicians always stride to improve our playing skills to a higher level, then pretentious we all shall be. I would opt for the category of being a pretentious musician rather than a crap musician.
20. Each to their own. Never got the punk thing, most of it was a bit thrashy and very simple as illustrated by a lot of these clips on this thread. As for the guy shouting out to the crowd that Matt Freeman is the best bassist in the world, he needs to get his head out of his arse. Sloppy solo, good for punk I guess but when put in perspective does not even measure on the scale against the likes of Geddy Lee etc.
21. I saw them a couple of times in their heyday and have a few of their albums, at the time when the Feelgoods, Blues Band and Nine Below were really cooking. I saw Nine Below again at the Peterborough Beer Fest in August 2008, not so hot as they used to be. Dennis Greeves had a dodgy guitar strap that kept falling off about every two minutes, very unprofessional, you would think the guy would carry a spare one!!!!!!
22. We had an awesome first gig with STEALER last night. The venue was superb, as was the in house PA and sound guy. A really receptive crowd made it a night to remember. One minor complaint, although my Mark Bass rig was only just ticking over, some folks in the restuarant two floors up were complaining their plates and cutlery were rattling on the table. That's the first one out of the way and now really looking forward to the next one in two weeks time.
23. After ten months of rehearsals we have our first gig on Saturday night at Mama Liz's Voodoo Lounge in Stamford, Lincs. We are all seasoned musicians who have been playing live for many years but there is still the excitement of playing your first live gig with a new formed band. We all currently play in other bands but we all have a passion for the band from the late sixties and early seventies called FREE, so we decided to form a musical tribute to them, it's certainly not a look a like band. It's been a real pleasure learning the cool laid back basslines of Andy Fraser. www.myspace.com/stealer1
24. A pretty poor show it was. Being a fan of the Motown era I was looking forward to Martha Reeves and the Vandellas but was extremely disappointed and embarrassed watching their performance. Mr Holland uses the word "legend" to descibe too many of his guest performers, he introduced Martha as one but the performance was aweful, the woman can clearly no longer sing, it sounded similar to my Granny singing at Christmas. She needs to be wheeled back to her nursing home and retire from singing gracefully, let people remember her as she was years ago. I was also expecting a magic performance from Annie Lennox but sadly let down again, her voice seems to have lost all its warmth and soul, all we got was a rasping shouting delivery. The Hold Steady just look like a load of Bank Managers thrashing away, nothing new and not particulary good musicians. Ting Tings, don't get them at all, throw away pop, will be forgotten in six months time. Best vocals on the night for me goes to Ruby Turner........always delivers.
25.
Maybe not the most technical or flashiest player, but Mani's certainly helped make the bass cool again & he is entertaining. For that reason, I'd also put Paul Simonon as a close second & possibly Peter Hook third.
Peter Hook a total dickhead, looks and plays bass like a total t*at. Colin Hodgkinson has been setting high standards for many years, listen to some material from Back Door. The guy out of the Blockheads......awesome.
