True, they don't, and thank god for that (could somebody tell Mark King please?) However, the original was slapped and it was a killer. Just cos this guy didn't slap it, that doesn't automatically make it better, surely?
Sorry Guys, I did not say it was better than the original. I just really enjoyed what I heard........................"the groove".
Bring back the slapping from the original track!
The bass playing was great because the guy was not slappin. As I said a really great groove, not all bass lines have to involve slappin.

How great was it to see older guys really playing well. The bass grooves were superb in my opinion. What do you think?

This is my new set up and I really like it. I'm still playing around with the settings for my ideal sound. It's really light and my balls no longer hang down around my knees.

Jools Holland being live and Estelle's bassist with mad skillz
steantval replied to alexclaber's topic in General Discussion
Mayb'e I was a bit harsh saying 80% of it was crap, it was probably about 50%. I totally understand music is a really subjective issue, but I really respect the musicians who put in the time and do their apprenticeship, rather than instant stardom because its fashionable. I just did not get the Punk thing. From a bassist's point of view Geddy Lee v's Sid Vicious, no contest. -

Jools show is a lot like the Whistle Test of years gone by. Everybody looks back and say's how great the Whistle test was, when in fact it usually contained about 20% of the show as decent listenable music and the other 80% was crap. Jools show is exactly the same and mostly dominated by some really poor bands/artists. The best thing to do is to video record it then fast forward all the bad bits, it saves wasting a good hour of precious time. I must comment on that band called the Only Ones, what a sad old bunch of losers. If guys get to that age and still can't perform to a decent level they should have retired from the music business years ago. I'm really suprised they are given TV airtime, they wouldn't even get a pub gig in my city with that sort of performance. -

Celebrity Gear - once used by the famous
steantval replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in General Discussion
I once owned an amazing (at the time) small Peavey combo 400-450 watts that was apparently used by the bassist in Foreigner for his studio work/recordings. -
Hi, Can anyone advise me on where to obtain really accurate bass tab for the band Free? I have just joined a Free tribute outfit and need to get up to speed very quickly, I know a lot of the songs already but there are at least another eight I need to nail.

Thanks to Ped for a great bass day. Good to see so many different bass rigs and a vast selection of instruments. I found the folks attending to be very friendly and helpful with advice. For some like myself who doesn't play slap style I was amazed at some of the playing there today, I thought it had gone out of fashion, obviously not!!!!! And just to finish off a fantastic day I got a phone call this evening offering me a job in a Free tribute band, just up my street (Mr Big solo).

I shall be there and I have just spoken to "doctor of bass" who is also coming.

I would like to see this from the other side of the coin. I was in a long term band doing very well until the guitarist decided to get involved in another band, the drummer was then playing in two other bands and the vocalist was also involved in another solo project. It ended up being a bloody nightmare and no longer any fun as we were cancelling more gigs due to double bookings because the other three could not keep their diaries up to date. The outcome of this is that the band has now folded. I am currently in the process of forming another band and have made it abundantly clear that all the musicians have 100% commitment to this new project, being involved in other bands will not be an option. Maybe I have just had a bad experience due to the incapabilities of other people and my thoughts are if you want to get involved in other projects you have to be really on the ball and super organised.

Is there a bass line that you just couldnt do?
steantval replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
I managed Spirit of Radio by Rush except the in the intro where the bass follows all the drum accents. A brilliant one to do live and really keeps you on your toes, not one to attempt if your having a bad night. Luckily we had an excellent vocalist who could also handle all the vocals without lowering the key. -

My old Trace Elliot set up, which is currently up for sale, anyone interested? My brand new MarkBass rig.

I have just purchased a new Mark Bass rig to replace my trusty old Trace Elliot rig on the recommendation of one of the best bass players in my local area. It consists of a CMD102P Combo and a 151HF Cabinet. I am still playing around with the settings and have only used it once so far in a live gig situation playing classic rock covers, Free, Bad Co , Floyd etc. In the live situation I was well impressed with the bottom end grunt, but I still feel I may need to tweek the settings a bit more to give me an optimum sound. I would love to get some feedback, good or bad on your experiences with Mark Bass gear? Maybe some guidance on settings for playing Foreigner, Toto, Journey covers?

This is my new set up I have just bought to replace my old Trace Elliot rig. The Trace gear was excellent but the weight just bust my balls. I was recommended the MarkBass gear with the lighter weight being a large factor, I'm still playing around with the sound. I will be playing AOR classic rock (Foreigner, Toto, Journey) with my Musicman Stingray. Can anyone out there suggest the best settings for this type of music? My set up consists of:- CMD 102P COMBO 151 HF CABINET

Bass player is urgently looking for a very talented vocalist to complete our line up for a new AOR Classic Rock covers project. We have all the following musicians in place- guitarist, keyboards, bass and drummer. You must have a mid to high range to cover songs from some of the following bands:- Foreigner Toto Journey Thunder Whitesnake Yes If you think you have the voice, please get in touch? We are all serious musicians of a good to high standard.
