1. I was most disappointed to hear the Paul Rogers/Queen combo do All Right Now (and various other Free/Bad Co numbers) with the "wrong" drum parts, especially the bass drum. Having been a fan of Bad Company for many years I had the opportunity to see Bad Company 2008 a couple of weeks ago. I was extremely disappointed by their performance, it was awful. Although I respect Mick Ralphs for writing some excellent songs, he is now living and performing off a name, what I witnessed was basically a load of old washed up musicians who can't hack it anymore. It's no suprise that Paul Rogers wants nothing to do with this project and avoids speaking about them. If they expect the public to pay to see them they should at least be able to put on a professional show. This lot cannot even play their own songs to a reasonable standard.
2. Maybe I should expand on my comment about playing covers as close to the original. I totally agree that the arrangements can be changed and I several cover versions by bands/artists in my collection that I prefer to the original versions. What I was getting at is the cover bands that do the local pubs and clubs circuits who are either too lazy to learn the songs properly or do not have the musical/vocal ability to carry them off. A prime example is when I see poor cover bands doing All Right Now by Free and the bass player plays over the verses when the bass actually comes in on the chorus. It's not there on the original so why put it in, do they actually listen to these tracks properly before attempting to play them? I knew Hendrix would be brought up (I nearly mentioned it in my original comments), but the Bay City Rollers , it's pretty sad you have to bring that garbage into the discussion. I'm suprised someone who contributes to this site has pictures of them, my little sister used to have posters of them on her bedroom wall in the seventies.
3. I have played in cover bands for most of my musical "career". I have a full time job and playing bass in bands is my passion, money is not the reason, so I play the stuff I like. No way could I play the middle of the road/chart numbers for these corporate functions, but totally understand why some folks have to do it for the money. I'm here to defend the good quality cover bands, I know there's alot of s*ite out there, I've seen them, I don't know how they can call themselves musicians and expect venues to pay them!! I believe the songs should be played as close to the original as possible or don't bother at all. I feel that playing numbers from different bands/bass styles/time signatures stretches my ability on an ongoing basis, whereas the majority of players in original bands only play safe within their sometimes very limited ability. I spotted a bass player in an originals band a fortnight ago playing a right handed bass upside down, for f*cks sake, just buy a proper left handed one and get on with it. Your comments would be welcome.
4. I use Planet Waves and have no problems. I'm currently using a 90 degree angled jack with the neat extra cut out switch, it's saves all those nasty pops and bangs when removing the jack.
5. Loud and Light......
6. Mark White...........Spin Doctors. Listed to the CD Homebelly Groove.........the bass playing is superb.
7. I have just returned from a trip to the USA and visited Sam Ash music where they had a brand new Warwick Corvette 4 string for $1200 about £600. I stood in the store and ummed and arred about buying it but decided not to. I must be bloody mad!!!!!!!!
8.
True, they don't, and thank god for that (could somebody tell Mark King please?) However, the original was slapped and it was a killer. Just cos this guy didn't slap it, that doesn't automatically make it better, surely?
Sorry Guys, I did not say it was better than the original. I just really enjoyed what I heard........................"the groove".
9.
Bring back the slapping from the original track!
The bass playing was great because the guy was not slappin. As I said a really great groove, not all bass lines have to involve slappin.
10. How great was it to see older guys really playing well. The bass grooves were superb in my opinion. What do you think?
11. This is my new set up and I really like it. I'm still playing around with the settings for my ideal sound. It's really light and my balls no longer hang down around my knees.
12. Mayb'e I was a bit harsh saying 80% of it was crap, it was probably about 50%. I totally understand music is a really subjective issue, but I really respect the musicians who put in the time and do their apprenticeship, rather than instant stardom because its fashionable. I just did not get the Punk thing. From a bassist's point of view Geddy Lee v's Sid Vicious, no contest.
13. Jools show is a lot like the Whistle Test of years gone by. Everybody looks back and say's how great the Whistle test was, when in fact it usually contained about 20% of the show as decent listenable music and the other 80% was crap. Jools show is exactly the same and mostly dominated by some really poor bands/artists. The best thing to do is to video record it then fast forward all the bad bits, it saves wasting a good hour of precious time. I must comment on that band called the Only Ones, what a sad old bunch of losers. If guys get to that age and still can't perform to a decent level they should have retired from the music business years ago. I'm really suprised they are given TV airtime, they wouldn't even get a pub gig in my city with that sort of performance.
14. Dancing in the Moonlight.........Lizzy Funky Music.................Wild Cherry Politician..........Cream Mr Big........Free Brown Eyed Girl.......Van Morrison
15. I once owned an amazing (at the time) small Peavey combo 400-450 watts that was apparently used by the bassist in Foreigner for his studio work/recordings.
16. Hi, Can anyone advise me on where to obtain really accurate bass tab for the band Free? I have just joined a Free tribute outfit and need to get up to speed very quickly, I know a lot of the songs already but there are at least another eight I need to nail.
17. Thanks to Ped for a great bass day. Good to see so many different bass rigs and a vast selection of instruments. I found the folks attending to be very friendly and helpful with advice. For some like myself who doesn't play slap style I was amazed at some of the playing there today, I thought it had gone out of fashion, obviously not!!!!! And just to finish off a fantastic day I got a phone call this evening offering me a job in a Free tribute band, just up my street (Mr Big solo).
18. I shall be there and I have just spoken to "doctor of bass" who is also coming.
19. I would like to see this from the other side of the coin. I was in a long term band doing very well until the guitarist decided to get involved in another band, the drummer was then playing in two other bands and the vocalist was also involved in another solo project. It ended up being a bloody nightmare and no longer any fun as we were cancelling more gigs due to double bookings because the other three could not keep their diaries up to date. The outcome of this is that the band has now folded. I am currently in the process of forming another band and have made it abundantly clear that all the musicians have 100% commitment to this new project, being involved in other bands will not be an option. Maybe I have just had a bad experience due to the incapabilities of other people and my thoughts are if you want to get involved in other projects you have to be really on the ball and super organised.
20. I managed Spirit of Radio by Rush except the in the intro where the bass follows all the drum accents. A brilliant one to do live and really keeps you on your toes, not one to attempt if your having a bad night. Luckily we had an excellent vocalist who could also handle all the vocals without lowering the key.
21. Mark White (SPIN DOCTORS) Muzz Skillings (LIVING COLOUR)
22. Here are my votes in no particular order. Geddy Lee (RUSH) Colin Hodgkinson (BACK DOOR) Felix Papparlardi (MOUNTAIN) Rick Laird (MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA MK 1) Chris Squire (YES) Lamar Williams (SEA LEVEL) Andy Fraser (FREE) Jeff Berlin (PLAYED ON VARIOUS SESSIONS)
23. My old Trace Elliot set up, which is currently up for sale, anyone interested? My brand new MarkBass rig.
24. I have just purchased a new Mark Bass rig to replace my trusty old Trace Elliot rig on the recommendation of one of the best bass players in my local area. It consists of a CMD102P Combo and a 151HF Cabinet. I am still playing around with the settings and have only used it once so far in a live gig situation playing classic rock covers, Free, Bad Co , Floyd etc. In the live situation I was well impressed with the bottom end grunt, but I still feel I may need to tweek the settings a bit more to give me an optimum sound. I would love to get some feedback, good or bad on your experiences with Mark Bass gear? Maybe some guidance on settings for playing Foreigner, Toto, Journey covers?
25. Here's some pics of my faithful early 90's Stingray.
