When I started learning guitar, I soon realised that I would make much better progress if I understood what I was doing. This was 1978 so no Internet, but I got a long way using books and just going over the stuff until I 'got' it. It is an ongoing journey of discovery, and it has never made me yawn. So 'yes please' for me.

I'm really happy with my TGI Extreme - I think it was £37 delivered from Bassgear, but they don't seem to stock them now.

My AVRI Precision. Before that I used to go out shopping with no particular agenda and come home with a bass that took my fancy.

In no particular order, the questions I suggest to ask before investing (time, money, energy) in ANY business: 1. Corporate structure - Boss and employees? Partnership? 2. Unique selling point (USP) - What differentiates you from the competition? 3. Cash turnover - The top line. 4. Business model - What's it about? Fun? Money? Self-esteem?

The bass guitar is a substantial instrument, and any part of it can be applied to the ribs of a drunkard/idiot to assist in propelling them away from the stage. If you are not playing but need to guide a drunk off the stage, shake hands while simultaneously grasping their left lapel with your left hand beneath their right arm. Push their right arm down onto your left and they will tend to move forward to relieve the pressure.

What bass were you playing before the Jazz?

Why not go with Chromes to start with? I have them on my 3 Precisions, and they all sound different.

The 1-finger-per fret approach comes from the skinny-string guitar technique known as position playing, where it works fine. It transfers ok above about the 5th fret on the bass, but if you apply it rigidly nearer the headstock you will find it very uncomfortable.
