1.
= mid-range hump which may or may not be desirable depending on your sound and the sound of the other instruments in the band. The actual Gramma Pad has corrugated foam in the gap between the two foam supports.
3.4kHz is quite high up in the mid range. For this resonance to occur, the bottom of the Barefaced cab (which has a usable range up to 4kHz) would have to be vibrating at 3.4kHz. I don't think Alex would be very happy if that was happening, what with all that bracing going on!
Could you not just put it on a big piece of the foam, the size of the cab footprint?
I did consider that, but I would need one piece for the Compact and another for the Midget. [EDIT - I consider bits sticking out at floor level to be hazardous!] Anyway, here is a picture of the recommended drum riser application from the Auralex website. Note all the gaps: And the application sheet is here.
 2. Depends. I derive a huge amount of pleasure from playing music, whether on my own at home, in rehearsals, or in front of an audience. The other night I was sight reading on bass, playing along with the track, and I was 'in the zone' to the point where I was hardly thinking about what I was doing, just enjoying listening to the music that was happening. As to being content with the standard of my playing, I am happy that there are plenty of situations where I can step in and play to a standard that will please the band-leader. But I am still striving to improve, and there are specific areas of dissatisfaction that I am working on.
 3.
You need to fill the gaps between the supports or they could create resonant spaces which would diminish the effectiveness of trying to isolate your cabs from the floor.
I did wonder about that but if you Google 'platfoam' you will find pictures on Auralex's website showing the same arrangement being used under a drum riser, and the Platfoam instructions tell you to leave 4-inch gaps between the lengths of foam. The gaps are actually 3.75in when used with the Compact, and 0.5in with the Midget. I reckon the spaces won't resonate because 2 of the 4 walls are made of foam, and too soft to form vibrational nodes. EDIT: Speed of sound v = 340ms[sup]-1[/sup], distance between cab base and floor (the two hard surfaces) is 0.05m so standing wave would have length λ = 0.1m v= fλ f = v/λ = 340ms[sup]-1[/sup]/0.1m =3400s[sup]-1[/sup] =3.4kHz Hardly bass boom!
 4. Congratulations lowdowner, your prize is the universal adulation that comes only from Basschat. Yes I was thinking about the plus and minus points of a Gramma Pad: Does the job by all accounts, but bigger than I need, a bit bulky to carry about, and a bit more then I want to spend. I also didn't see the point of the wooden platform part - surely the isolating foam is the important bit? So, I cut 34cm lengths of Platfoam to match the depth of my BF cabs, then measured the positions of both sets of cab feet, and drilled recesses with a 25mm wood bit. The foam tends to pop back up so you have to go a bit deeper, to about half the depth of the foam. This makes the setup more stable as almost all the top of the foam is in contact withe bottom of the cab. I am considering fitting some kind of spacer to align the foam withe the Compact, but in the meantime I intend to try it on a gig tomorrow night, then I should know whether any tweakage is required.
 5. I've just made this. It cost me less than £15 and I carry it in my stand bag. Can you tell what it is, children?
 6. I have used Snap Jack cables on my skinny-strings in the past but prefer to mute with the tuner pedal whilst re-plugging these days. I keep it down to one change per set max though.
 7. Sold my Nocaster to Dan. Haven't heard a word since it was delivered so I'm guessing he's speechless with joy! Anyway, no messing about, so no complaints from me
 8.
AFAIK there is no difference in real terms. Your amp is still 'seeing' the same resistance connected either way.
Which is the speakers in parallel. That's how it is normally done.

 11.
Plus one ;-)
Andy, why aren't you working!? (My excuse - working at home and having my well-earned lunch break.)
 12. I will be playing Plug In Baby this Saturday and I will just switch to the P pickup and max the bass's treble control. My amp is always set for a bit of grit. Job done. The only people who will notice if you nail the sound are you and any Muse-loving bass players in the audience. I'm not saying you shouldn't shoot for a sound that is appropriate, but the effort of duplicating the original sound may be better expended elsewhere e.g. playing the song correctly!
 13. How the blood and stomach pills would you hold the thing?
 14. Nice! One of Fender's more successful experiments methinks.
 15.
Fret Line width 0.05 mm, width of finger 14mm. You still need your ears, guys!! The line just gets you in the ball park with probably little more accuracy than habit.
Although I have fret lines, once I've been paying a while and I'm 'in the zone', I stop looking - or I look less often. So I agree
 16.
Geezer Butler was one of my main formative influences on the bass. I regard him as one of the greatest rock players of all time...superb!
Just been listening to my Sabbath compilation in the car. I concur!
 17.
It's a double bass thing, but if you're interested, you'd want to try to find out as much as you can about Francois Rabbath. The basic idea is, if your fingers 124 cover frets 567, you can also pivot your hand (with the thumb in the same place) to reach for frets 4 and 8. Using this pivoting, he then subdivides the bass' neck into fewer positions (relative to the other dominant school of double bass left hand tehnique, Simandl). Personally, I think it's dead useful (particularly on upright), although I am primarily a Simandl (124 strictly without pivot) player, and tend to see Rabbath style technique as an exension of Simandl rather than an addition to it. This series of videos features one of Rabbath's students teaching the basics: Here's another one of Rabbath's more accomplished students absolutely tearing it up:
Thanks, that's very useful. I'm familiar with finger-per-fret position playing, which I brought over from the guitar. I'll check this out further. BTW I am strictly BG not DB or EUB - the right-hand approach is so different, it's almost another instrument! Also I know andyonbass (of this parish), who has made a success of his DB/EUB playing - it doesn't half look like hard work. /end of thread hijack
 18.
If you use a thumb pivot with 1234 or 124 and restrict your thumb positions to 3 or 4 (say F#, G, A and B relative to E string), you won't need lines at all. Side markers on the thumb positions will see you right every time. It's a phenomenally accurate method for intonation because you need make very few position shifts, and those you do make are to a limited number of destinations. I took to this method for learning the upright, but it's produced an amazing improvement in my intonation for fretless bg.
Where can I find out more about this approach?
 19. Gorgeous bass. Don't normally go for natural wood but this is splendid. +1 for GuitarGuitar - they replaced a dead TC amp for me within a week.
 20. Disappointed. Thought this was going to be an in-depth discussion of the merits of a floating thumb technique

 22. I had a guitar from this range, the Musician MC300.
 23.
Don't know if you'd consider the Squier range but a few months ago I went to PMT to look for a cheaper version of my old Mustang to take the less salubrious gigs we do and I tried the Squier Mustangs which were ok, then I tried the Mikey Way signature and was seriously impressed. Head and shoulders above the others. I nearly bought it as it was less than 250 quid but I decided I would never be able to live with the sparkly silver finish so didn't. Good bass though if you like the look of it. Les
Looks dreadful to me!
I tried one out a while ago. £550 new. Always fancied one. Ughhh..... ! Hope it was a one off :OL !
One man's meat etc. Where was it? £550 is pretty keen!
 24.
Thanks very much dude! Unlikely to be around that way unfortunately though. How do you find that setup?
Very flexible, and never short of... anything! As I have posted elsewhere on this forum, it's like 3 rigs in 1: Head + Midget = home practice, rehearsals, quiet/acoustic gigs Head + Compact = larger gigs e.g. functions, C&W Head + Compact + Midget = loud rock gigs
