1. I'd buy this except I've got one, and paid more than this on eBay.
2. Wow! How have I missed these?
3. What a bizarre situation! I am not averse to copping a good arrangement idea if I come across one but I wouldn't just rip off another covers band's entire act!
4. It's in G, but starts off with a run down from Bb.
5.
Thanks for responses. All it is, the pickups on my Yamaha BB414 are pretty hot and I'm trying to replicate a recording tone I used on a track years ago, but struggling a bit. The bass used was a p copy and I'm using the p pickup in my Yamaha. I appreciate that pickups are not going to sound the same, but didn't know if rolling off volume may replicate the more mellower output nature of that other bass. (not had chance to check myself first hand either)
Try backing off the tone if you want to go mellower.
6. Also try Effect Power Supplies.
7. It makes quite a difference whether your bass is active or passive. On a well-sorted active bass, reducing the volume at the bass should have very little effect on the tone into an amp set clean (although if you were driving your amp's front end hard, there will be a difference as a result of that). On a passive bass, you will almost certainly lose some top end as you back of the volume. I used to compensate for this on my P by turning up my tone control, which was normally on about 50%. There is a lot of fun to be had juggling the volume and tone controls on a passive bass - they are very interactive! EDIT - Afterthought - some active pickups, notably EMGs, are reputed to sound 'compressed' if run on a 9V supply because this limits the headroom of the pre-amp, but the effect disappears if you run them at 18V. There is plenty discussion on this online...
8. Will no other fretless P (with added J) sunburst/torty fit the bill? EDIT: Not looking to sell anything btw!
9.
So, I'm in my studio testing my new to me Streamliner 900. Marvellous it is too. I've nabbed the "flat"setting off TB and all is splendid. Anyway, I'm using it into my Neox 212t. I have always , always used tweeters in all my cabs. I kind of felt that I might be missing something if I didn't. Then, out of interest, I turned it off totally. To my surprise it sounded just as good, if not slightly cleaner and rounder. So, I'm pleased. Pleased as I am now tempted to score one of the Compacts in the fs section. I reckon the STM into one might sound rather splendid. Just sharing. Any thoughts?
Streamliner 900 + Compact? Splendid indeed!
10. If you are using car audio as the basis for your portable rig, be aware that the power ratings claimed for them are basically LIES dressed up with terms like 'Peak Music Power Output'. They think of a number and double it, then double it again!
11. New filter caps today. The 32uFx32uF are fine but the 100uF are too small in diameter, so sent them back to Hot Rox and paying extra to replace them with 50uFx50uF - I will wire each unit in parallel to give me 100uF.
12.
= mid-range hump which may or may not be desirable depending on your sound and the sound of the other instruments in the band. The actual Gramma Pad has corrugated foam in the gap between the two foam supports.
3.4kHz is quite high up in the mid range. For this resonance to occur, the bottom of the Barefaced cab (which has a usable range up to 4kHz) would have to be vibrating at 3.4kHz. I don't think Alex would be very happy if that was happening, what with all that bracing going on!
Could you not just put it on a big piece of the foam, the size of the cab footprint?
I did consider that, but I would need one piece for the Compact and another for the Midget. [EDIT - I consider bits sticking out at floor level to be hazardous!] Anyway, here is a picture of the recommended drum riser application from the Auralex website. Note all the gaps: And the application sheet is here.
13. Depends. I derive a huge amount of pleasure from playing music, whether on my own at home, in rehearsals, or in front of an audience. The other night I was sight reading on bass, playing along with the track, and I was 'in the zone' to the point where I was hardly thinking about what I was doing, just enjoying listening to the music that was happening. As to being content with the standard of my playing, I am happy that there are plenty of situations where I can step in and play to a standard that will please the band-leader. But I am still striving to improve, and there are specific areas of dissatisfaction that I am working on.
14.
You need to fill the gaps between the supports or they could create resonant spaces which would diminish the effectiveness of trying to isolate your cabs from the floor.
I did wonder about that but if you Google 'platfoam' you will find pictures on Auralex's website showing the same arrangement being used under a drum riser, and the Platfoam instructions tell you to leave 4-inch gaps between the lengths of foam. The gaps are actually 3.75in when used with the Compact, and 0.5in with the Midget. I reckon the spaces won't resonate because 2 of the 4 walls are made of foam, and too soft to form vibrational nodes. EDIT: Speed of sound v = 340ms[sup]-1[/sup], distance between cab base and floor (the two hard surfaces) is 0.05m so standing wave would have length λ = 0.1m v= fλ f = v/λ = 340ms[sup]-1[/sup]/0.1m =3400s[sup]-1[/sup] =3.4kHz Hardly bass boom!
15. Congratulations lowdowner, your prize is the universal adulation that comes only from Basschat. Yes I was thinking about the plus and minus points of a Gramma Pad: Does the job by all accounts, but bigger than I need, a bit bulky to carry about, and a bit more then I want to spend. I also didn't see the point of the wooden platform part - surely the isolating foam is the important bit? So, I cut 34cm lengths of Platfoam to match the depth of my BF cabs, then measured the positions of both sets of cab feet, and drilled recesses with a 25mm wood bit. The foam tends to pop back up so you have to go a bit deeper, to about half the depth of the foam. This makes the setup more stable as almost all the top of the foam is in contact withe bottom of the cab. I am considering fitting some kind of spacer to align the foam withe the Compact, but in the meantime I intend to try it on a gig tomorrow night, then I should know whether any tweakage is required.
16. I've just made this. It cost me less than £15 and I carry it in my stand bag. Can you tell what it is, children?
17. I have used Snap Jack cables on my skinny-strings in the past but prefer to mute with the tuner pedal whilst re-plugging these days. I keep it down to one change per set max though.
18. Sold my Nocaster to Dan. Haven't heard a word since it was delivered so I'm guessing he's speechless with joy! Anyway, no messing about, so no complaints from me
19.
AFAIK there is no difference in real terms. Your amp is still 'seeing' the same resistance connected either way.
Which is the speakers in parallel. That's how it is normally done.

23. I will be playing Plug In Baby this Saturday and I will just switch to the P pickup and max the bass's treble control. My amp is always set for a bit of grit. Job done. The only people who will notice if you nail the sound are you and any Muse-loving bass players in the audience. I'm not saying you shouldn't shoot for a sound that is appropriate, but the effort of duplicating the original sound may be better expended elsewhere e.g. playing the song correctly!
24. How the blood and stomach pills would you hold the thing?
25. Nice! One of Fender's more successful experiments methinks.
