Jamerson Analysed - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me
JapanAxe replied to rw3cja's topic in Theory and Technique
Hi Chris, really enjoyed that. Funny I was only playing (i.e. fumbling through) this a couple of days ago, as I discovered I had that GK&TP version and of course it's in the Jamerson book. Nice technique - I noticed you use 'sweep-fingering' to play those quick downward arpeggios. As regards analysis, there are also a couple of points at which JJ leads up to the root of a new chord by playing the notes immediately above and below it, in bars 1 to 6 of Choruses 1 and 3 (done 3 times in each). More power to both your elbows mate! -
Millions of people like guitar solos. Bass solos are best left to the jazz scene where on average only 12 people will have to suffer them at one time...
Not sure I've ever seen that many people at a jazz gig, even if you count the band among that number

Without wanting to upset anyone, I have never felt any desire to play a bass solo. Unless you count that bit in the middle of Brown Eyed Girl

Welcome Conjovi! Just a tip, you might want to think about moving that Lakland and its stand indoors, as the rain won't do it any good
Finally used slap in a song.. which scares me a little.
I'm sorry that doesn't count unless you go to a music shop on a Saturday afternoon and play your slap riff on 20 expensive basses, none of which you are willing or able to buy But really, well done , I've managed to get through 13 years of bass playing without any public slapping!

That seems like quite a difficult adjustment to make.

As a bass player and guitarist, I would say that playing bass well requires a higher level of musicality than guitar at a similar level.
-
I play guitar more than bass these days. In my main band I am the only guitarist, together with bass and drums. That leaves me with a lot of space to fill! I now dislike playing with another guitarist, as I have become so used to a single-guitarist approach. There is very little that you can't do with a 'power trio' line-up.

Just read the linked BC thread. Funny, even with humongously powerful G&L HB pickup, gain engaged and knob set at noon, I am only just getting audible drive on the lower notes. Need the gain to 2 o'clock for the same effect on the Sandberg. Then again, all strung with flats, so there isn't so much top end to get overdriven. I settled on all JJ 12AX7's on the basis that they were predictable (in a goood way) and reliable. I tried vintage Sylvanias but they didn't seem to make much difference at home levels - might be different on a gig though.

Working band - and learning new songs
JapanAxe replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
One rehearsal does it for my 3-piece. On rare occasions we might go over something at another rehearsal, but that's usually if issues have arisen on a gig. Mind you, I put mp3s, lyrics, and a lead sheet in folders on Dropbox that we can all access, so effectively we are all playing from the same hymn sheet! -
