1. I think it was the Boss ME8B that I had. It had a great PWM* sound that was probably lifted from the SYB3 pedal. *Pulse Width Modulation
2.
The larger the cab system, the further away the sound focus will be...
Pardon me but what is 'sound focus'? Can you explain the physics of this?
3. New pre-amp valves incoming - Sylvanias, and only 37 years old!
4.
+1
+1 also!
5.
I've noticed a lot of guitarists (Guthrie Govan being the most obvious example) are turning to the AxeFX unit but personally I can't see what all the fuss is about. In this video, Guthrie uses a number of guitars and while they all sound ok, there's no 'wow' factor about his tone considering the amount of nice amp/pedal gear you could buy for the price IMO!
There's quite a lot of 'guitar face' going on there. I'm sure you wouldn't get that with separate pedals
6. I tried one back in 2002. I wasn't impressed tbh and bought a Boss bass multi-fx for about the same money. What a great investment that would have been! So... I don't know either!
7. Don't think I've ever seen 2 Deep Impacts on one peadl board before - or even in the same room for that matter!
8. I prefer to sell with the case (and in a cardboard box) if shipping, as it offers better protection than just a cardboard box on its own. Having said that, when I sold my Variax guitar I threw in an old tweed case I had, and kept the superb Line 6 gig bag!
9. Did you pay the import duty up front? If not, an unpleasant surprise may await you; or if you did pay it, maybe an even more unpleasant surprise!
10. Can't answer for Sibob, but my guitar pedalboard gets its juice from an IEC mains lead into a GigRig Generator. One cable from guitar to pedalboard, 2 cables from there to back of stage. No batteries to go flat, or to forget to charge. If mains goes down you're screwed anyway.
11.
I believe it's a '69 and he's had it since new?
Probably not a man who suffers much from GAS then!
12. Excellent review, covers all the things you need to know. Part of me is GASing to upgrade to 3rd gen BF but tbh I am pretty happy with my existing BF rig. Can I suggest that the fanboys and haters start their slanging on a separate thread?
13. The pickups look like those on some Dean basses.
14. Aha! But such a thing does exist - my G&L has passive tone controls plus a switchable pre-amp, perhaps not quite what you were thinking of, but still... Anyway I will be experimenting when I have a couple of hours spare. Would still appreciate a look at the schematic mind!
15. Welcome Ben, you'll like it here. Lots of choice when it comes to lightweight heads and cabs. I suggest you start by reading the Basschatters' reviews.
16. I have a Sandberg bass factory-fitted with an onboard 2-band pre-amp. I have noticed that the treble control does not give the same amount of cut as on a passive P-bass, regardless of whether the Sandy's controls are set to active or passive. I am guessing this is some sort of compromise to make the control effecrive in both modes. I am therefore wondering about increasing the cap value on the treble control, although I realise this may screw with its performance in other (unpredictable) ways. If I can identify the right cap, I can just experiment by solder-tacking a succession of different caps in parallel with it, until I get the result I want. However, I would prefer to know what I am doing from the start! So... Does anyone have a schematic for the Glockenklang 2-band? Anyone tried this or other mods? Any other words of wisdom (other than 'don't do it, you'll break it')?
17.
I don't get how succesful an active/passive preamp can be... the pot values for active vs passive are wildly different - there's a pay off got to be made somewhere. I guess thats where some preamps have the "get out of jail free" by flicking a switch and wiring the pickups straight to the jack... but any tone shaping is always going to take a hit due to pot values... unless somebody can explain something I'm missing?
No, you're right! I have a Sandberg with a Glockenklang 2-band, and the cap value on the treble control must be some kind of compromise, because turning it right down does not give you the deep dubby bass-boost sound that you get by doing this on a P. In fact that's the only thing I miss about my old P now. I'm thinking of modding it - look out for an imminent new thread! EDIT: just done it here - didn't want to hijack this thread!
18. Meh. Only kidding, they look great. Just don't even think about flogging any Grecenbackers on here....
19. Dave kindly sent the measurements of the cut strings, and I realised that the B-E-A tuning posts on my G&L are a lot further from the nut than on, say, a Precision, because of the layout of the 3+2 headstock. Thanks Dave, have a bump on me!
20. If you are stressing a 700W rig in a rehearsal, you are all playing too darned loud. (1) All turn down. (2) Set up your rehearsal space so that you line up with the side of (but are not right next to) your guitarist's amp, and facing your bass rig on the opposite side of the room - that way you can hear yourself properly, but aren't taking the full force from the guitarist. (3) All turn down some more.
