I ordered a generic Tele neck from an eBay seller. It arrived in a bubble-wrap sleeve. The postman managed to force it through the letterbox. When I got home it was stopping the door opening, so there I was pushing at the door and bending one of the tuners. Eejuts one and all.

I have sold guitars both here and on eBay, and it is a very anxious time while you wait for safe delivery to the buyer. Loads of bubble wrap, strategically placed cardboard stiffeners, shipping boxes blagged from guitar shops, insurance (Parcelforce's weasel-words prevent you covering musical instruments to their full value so I use drop-off services via Interparcel), and it could still go t!ts-up. So... I do have sympathy for collection-only sellers. Considering I now have to travel at least 40-50 miles to find a decent guitar or bass shop, going to see something 100 miles away is not such a hardship. However, Scotland is out of the question, and Wigan should definitely be avoided.

Although a lot of the Anthology material isn't great, this could be. Possibly.

Warning.... Kappalite 3015 NOT designed for Bass!
One would not expect Aston Martin to honor a warranty replacement claim should one drive it into a grove of trees.
-
Used mine with a Schroeder 1212L. Great sound.
OBBM and I tried his MB200 through my BF Midget at the SE Bass Bash - didn't really cut it, the amp definitely wants 4ohm to bring out its best.

It's going to be the tuners that suffer the worst!

Squier Fretless Precision ...anyone tried one ?
JapanAxe replied to mike 110's topic in Bass Guitars
I suppose the hard part might be finding a dealer with stock, but as a first fretless it's got to be a good option - cheap as chips, and lines instead of frets to help you get started. -
I only use tremolo on skinny-string, for which my choice is the Danelectro Cool Cat Tremolo: metal housing, 3PDT true bypass, lovely opto-based circuit, control knobs safely out of the way of my stomping size 11s, 'hard' mode gives you on/off effect - expect to pay around £30 used.

You mean this: Looks lovely, even has lines for those of us who like to cheat Haven't tried one but gotta be worth a go - different flavour to the J version. -
Soak overnight in meths. Works a treat. Used to boil them, but meths is better.
...but don't boil in meths. Unless you like bonfires. Indoors.
Just to clarify, this failure mode suggests the user has been pushing too much power in below the tuning frequency, which is easily done with a powerful SWR amp and cabs that are tuned too high (I've seen Ashdown cabs tuned at 60Hz+). Any power going in a fair way below the tuning frequency will result in both huge voice coil heating for minimal sound output and huge excursion from the cone acting like it's working in free air.
@skidder652003 - in what cab did this driver die? -
Boo! Poor customer service! In my mind as an ex employee of a huge capatalist bastard company. This caps sales and for the price of one refunded speaker they are potentially losing future sales. Idiots!
I don't think so. The fact that the voice coil has been hitting the buffers surely points to it being pushed too hard, and a significant factor is the cab in which it's been installed - the OP's signature suggests he just put a Kappalite in old Ashdown and Warwick enclosures. I don't think Compact owners need worry (is it the exact same driver?) as the cab is specifically designed around the driver. Also I won't be worrying because of the 65Hz roll-of built into TC heads! It would be quite good to have some words of wisdom from Mr Claber here... -

More likely there will be a massive bidfest near the end -

Oi! Mouth! I was watching that and hoping to get a deal, now everybody knows! -
There could also be the situation (although this is more prevalent in the skinny-string world) where people seek out the old-original-therefore-plainly-superior models. Especially before production was moved to the Far East e.g. Kent!
I have modded two guitar tube amps to use with my bass. A 5w EVJ and a 15w Fender excelsior, both combos. The EVJ is ok for quiet practice with good tone when I am away in hotels (quiet often with my job) ... I have used Hammond OTs in both of mine... Warning Valve amps should only be worked on by people with the relevant experience and understanding of the dangers involved in working with high voltage electrical components
I have extensively modded a Harley Benton GA5, which is Thomann's much cheaper badge-engineered version of the Epi Valve Junior. Mods included:

Sorting out the DC voltage
Fitting a screen grid resistor
New Hammond OPT
Jensen speaker (I have the combo)
Tidying up the preamp circuit
Tone stack removed, replaced with tone circuit from Big Muff
Gain and master volume
I got my information from sewatt.com, an excellent valve amp modding forum. I am sure there is scope for optimising the preamp to suit a bass, but definitlely replace the under-specced OPT if you go down this route - it also give you all the output impedance options you are likely to need.
I'll have another poke at the weekend...
That's one of the things I'd do - poke components with a little wooden stick (save them when you get a takeaway coffee) to detect bad or broken solder joints.
The Streamliner I know less about but again is supposed to be valvey sounding.
That'll be the 3 actual valves in the preamp!
