1. I used to use a Trantec system with a previous band (and they still use it). IIRC it cost about £500 for the transmitter and 2 belt-pack receivers. My comments: (1) The supplied earphones were complete Barry White. We bought M-Audio earphones at about £70 per pair - brilliant sound, slightly uncomfortable fit. (2) Get some extra-high capacity NiMH rechargeable batteries that will see you through your sets, keep Alkalines for spares.
2. I was happy to pay the £20 fee - a huge bargain compared to eBay. If I see things getting fraught in a thread, my reaction is the same as if I was seeing a heated exchange in the street - just walk away.
3. Andy there is EU I-Amp for sale here. Graeme
4. I used to use a long Planet Waves jack-to-jack speaker cable and put my extension cab next to the drummer in one particularly awkward venue. The drummer never complained about the sound quality!
5. Isn't this a job best left to Mark D Philips?
6. My own kit - TC head in laptop bag over shoulder, BF Midget in one hand, bass in the other = one trip from the car.
7. Looks like it came off a WAL?
8. What makes you think there is a problem with your preamp valves? Power valves are more likely to die, as they have to work a lot harder. You could just buy a set and swap them out yourself, but if another fault has caused damage to them, then you may trash them too. If you are ever in Swindon you are welcome to bring the head and I will put them on my Orange valve tester. DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT AN AMP TECH!
9. I have a trio that goes out under two names, one on the country circuit, the other doing social clubs. The easiest one to programme is the social club outfit: a song will make to into the set if it has been a top 10 hit and you can dance to it. At least half the set consists of number 1 hits. It's much harder to please a country audience, not least because some like traditional country, some want to line dance to what is basically rock in a Stetson, and there will always be someone who requests a song you've never heard of. My approach is to work on about 50% 'bankers', I.e. the sort of songs that even non-fans will recognise, and try and tailor the sets to the members' preferences. I have long since given up trying to educate audiences to great songs that have never been hits. In both cases I limit slow numbers to 1 in 5 at most, and avoid grouping too many mid-tempo numbers together.
10. Correct me if I'm wrong, but are there not some places where you definitely should not use carbon comp resistors, e.g. in the power supply where they could burst into flames? *immediately regrets venturing into technical area beyond own expertise*
11. Been reading Friedrich Nietzsche have they?
12. If it's anything like the tube in an Ashdown ABM, it just adds a bit of foggy warmth rather than obvious overdrive. A good buy, though I now rock lightweight kit myself.
13. Whereabouts in Wales are you? (I understand it's quite a large area!)
14. Having acquired a Laney Lionheart head form a friend, I realised I wasn't using the Tiny Terror head any more. This is an early model, with Standby on the mains switch rather than on the 7W/15W switch. Mainly home use, occasional jams. Comes complete with its gig bag, mains lead (of course), its original box, and for Bass Chat forum members, a quality Planet Waves speaker lead. You can use this head with any suitably rated 8- or 16-ohm cab. Payment by bank transfer (preferred) or PayPal, or come and try it through my Jensen-loaded Laney 2x10 cab (or your own cab), in which case payment by cash (and of course I will knock off the shipping cost). Please note this is a guitar head, NOT a bass head - it is just not powerful enough for bass, at least if you want any clean headroom! 15. It really depends on (1) the size of the venue, (2) whether you will be supported by the PA, and (3) how loud your bandmates like to play. If the answer to (2) is yes, you probably don't need to worry about (1) and (3) to a point - that point being when you can't hear yourself on stage! Are you able to borrow bigger/alternative kit? If so, set up your existing rig and the borrowed rig, so that you can switch over if you need to. Trouble is, if the answer to (2) is yes, your sound person will not thank you for changing rigs mid-set!
16.
Ooh, thanks Stu, just ordered on vinyl - CD player in the car isn't working anyway!
Good job you have a record player in your car then!
