1. PM'd Rob - basically, the guy I lent the Hartke to, he only wanted it if he could swap for his guitar amp that he was having trouble selling - but I don't much care for his amp! So - available again
2. @Rob - no I've lent it to a friend to try, and he's lent me a guitar amp to try, with a view to a possible swap. This was only last Wednesday, so no verdict yet. I'll chase him up and see what he thinks.
3. Looks like you caned your budget or went second-hand (or both).
4. TC Classic 450, mains lead, speaker leads, guitar cable, all fit in a lap-top bag (£10 from Family Bargains). That's fine for rehearsals and jams, but on a gig (bass or guitar) I always take one of those silver tool cases with all the other essentials: mics, mic leads, different length jack leads, kettle leads, 6-way mains extension lead, spare valves, fuses, capo, picks, ear plugs, circuit breaker, ring main tester, head-worn torch (for pitch dark pack-ups in marquees), multi-tool, set lists, business cards....
5. Bought a pedal from the Dude - despatched quickly, well packed, arrived in perfect condition. A thumbs-up from me!
6.
I made a note of this last year when I was deciding whether to get a second Compact or a Midget (I went for the Compact in the end). The price was £450 + £40 Neodym surcharge + £25 delivery + £25 for the silver cloth, totalling £540 for the silver cloth option delivered.
^^^ what he said, £25 less if you go for black not silver. EDIT: more now though!
7. Look for a used Sandberg. My Cali (definitely NOT for sale!) looks like a Precision, but has a lovely slim neck at the nut.
8.
Can't you play the 'low' tones just an octave higher (or even, gosh, something different around the same theme/feel but not so low?) I ask genuinely by the way, I don't know the answer
I've been doing that for years and no-one in either band or audience has ever come up and said 'Oi, where did those notes below low E go?'
9. Semi-withdrawn! I have done a swap for a guitar combo on approval both ways, as it were. Watch this space
10.
Do you know what the nut width is? Im after a 44mm nut precision and not sure if the 62 reissues have them. cheers.
My digital micrometer makes it 42.9mm.
Great idea about changing the plate for a tortie, might even consider a red one myself now!!
Go for it!
11. I'm up for one when they come into stock. Although not ignorant of electronics, I don't possess the in-depth knowledge of valves needed to fly anything more demanding than Orange's offering. Plus I have lots of valves, both in and out of amps, that require a quick assessment.
12. Briefly met Mr K and the rest of the band backstage at a Steeleye gig in Middlesbrough. Factoid: he nearly became a Spider From Mars!
13. I like the sound and feel of the strings that came fitted to my Sandberg, and would like to stick with them. Unfortunately it seems it's not that easy to get them in the UK. Thomann supply them, but their minimum order kinda kills the price! Somebody started a similar thread on Talkbass last year - any comments, do we think they're right? http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f16/what-strings-come-stock-sandbergs-842466/
14. I have stayed with Snow Leopard. Can't justify paying out for 2 cans of turd polish (one for each Mac). One day I will be forced to upgrade, but then I'll look back sagely at all the OS revisions and bug fixes, and with any luck find the combination that still lets all my important stuff work.

not sure
Not sure this is rock but love this bass riff
No, it's pop of the best possible sort.
16. This lovely bass is still available. I am in no rush to sell, mind you, just saying!
17. Did I mention the line-in socket for your iPod? I have now
18.
Don't know if it'd take your fancy or would wanna sell on yourself but I've got a blackstar ht5th anniversary amp I wanna sell, fancy a trade plus cash?
Thanks for the offer but I'm fully sorted on the small guitar amp front.
19. Although the Midget gets plenty of references throughout Basschat, I can't see a review thread devoted solely to it, so this is it! I ordered a Compact in late September, then almost immediately bought a used one from Shockwave, so I changed my order to a Midget. I paid the extra for the vintage silver grille cloth to match the Compact, and because it looks cool! Anyway, it arrived last week. I plugged it in briefly just to check it was working, and wasn't surprised to hear a predominance of upper mids. Then I ran a 25Hz signal (from an iPad app) through it for 8 hours, though I probably only had it loud enough for the last hour or two. Took it to a rehearsal in the guitarist's home studio - sounded damned fine after dialling in a touch of extra bass and a tad less upper mids. Gigged it last Saturday with my Sandberg Cali VM4 through my TC Classic 450. The band consisted of me (bass and vocals), female singer, guitarist (electric / steel-string acoustic / nylon-string acoustic), and drummer (electronic kit). The venue was a high-ceilinged hall built in 1860, and we had to keep the volume reasonable. For the first two sets the amp was still a little 'forward' in the mids, but by the third set it had attained a lovely plummy fullness. The sound from this tiny lightweight cab housing a single 12 is astounding! I had my amp on 3 and it was plenty loud enough. I have also tried the Midget/Compact stack at home, and that simply rocks! Can't wait to take that rig on a louder indie/punk gig. Here's the stage setup: And here's the stack at home:
20. Saturday night I played at the Corn Exchange in Faringdon in a 4-piece country outfit. The singer was suffering from some kind of stomach upset, and when we went on stage for the 3rd set, she hadn't made it back. I was doing about 1/3 of the lead vocals, so we pulled a couple of my numbers forward, then I had to whip out a couple of standards that the other 2 guys would know... then she came back and we finished the evening. Phew! Afterwards a lady of a certain age put her arm round my waist for entirely too long, then a cowboy fella did the same, and 'accidentally' brushed my butt with his hand. I blame Brokeback Mountain...
