Do the best pro-bass players mainly play 4 strings?
JapanAxe replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
In a big band I have occasionally been presented with impossible guitar chords - closed 5-note voicings that would be a piece of cake on keys, but would require 9-inch fingers to execute on guitar! -
Another ForScore user. I have seen people use a page-turner pedal, but £80? I just swipe with my finger...
-
The other factor in play here is a personal one for me: option anxiety! I don't like having too much choice when it comes to controls to set - 4 bands is more than enough for me! Maybe I'm just lazy...

Recorded audition on guitar for Steely Dan tribute
JapanAxe replied to JapanAxe's topic in General Discussion
Thanks I have this on CD. Cheers, will look for that. This really helped me: -
If only it were that simple! A typical 3-band EQ has shelving treble and bass controls plus a bandpass mid control, all with very wide bandwidths (low Q factor). A well-configured 3-band control will sound very 'musical' and natural. Graphic controls work on much narrower bands (high Q factor). To approximate the action of a 3-band control, it would not be sufficient to simply boost or cut the desired centre frequencies; you would also have to apply smaller amounts of boost and cut to some of the neighbouring sliders. I don't normally have time for this on a gig! I'm not here to bash TE kit, it's just not for me.

I’d be more likely to try a TE if they did a conventional solid state head with a 3- or 4-knob EQ. I can’t be arsed with graphics EQs!

Following a casual enquiry about a FB ad, I now find myself spending serious guitar practice time trying to play Kid Charlemagne and Rikki Don’t Lose That Number. Yes, that’s right, Kid Charlemagne, the song with the jaw-dropping Larry Carlton solo. I have been sent backing tracks with no guitar, and I have to record whatever lead and/or rhythm parts I choose and then send it back. I am getting there, having combined an old Guitarist mag transcription of the solo, my own transcription of the rest, and Rick Beato’s very useful walk-through on YouTube. I am going to record my parts in as few takes as possible, and fess up to comping the best bits. If I can pull this off I will raise my guitar-playing game a good couple of notches - about time really, I should be a lot better than I am after nearly 40 years of playing! So wish me luck. Any top tips about nailing the Dan thing gratefully accepted...

Tribute bands - where the name is better than the band

And bloody good they are too -

Christ on a bike, I think any Class D amp would struggle to keep up with that! Sounds great - actually better (meaning more solid) than the sort of sound Noel Redding used to get through a Marshall stack. -

Its core sound was just too aggressive for me. I went home with a Demeter. -

Cheers, had to watch that again! Would love to try one. About 3 years back I got all excited about a Mesa Bass Prodigy that had come into Bassgear, but when I tried it I really didn't like it. For that reason I am reluctant to buy a WB-100 untried -

Thanks for that - and for re-awakening my illogical valve GAS! -
Is in in 3 or 4, and where is the first beat? Hard to read without bar lines! Just copied into Sibelius and played it back but I don't recognise it.

Ooh - more GAS fuel!

Lead guitarist seeks country or Americana band
JapanAxe replied to JapanAxe's topic in Other Musicians
Update: My current country band will be carrying on, we've found a way to make that work. Still interested in any country/Americana lead guitar opportunities though. -
I buy kit for 2 reasons: to gig, or to use in my home studio. All my amps, guitars and basses get gigged, as do most of my fx pedals. Having said that, there are times when I take the less expensive stuff, usually when I'm going to have to leave kit in a parked car or hotel bedroom. Also I will take my Mustang bass rather than a Precision if it's a really cramped venue - a 4in shorter neck makes a significant difference!
