  1. On a bass gig, the only gadget between bass and amp is my Korg Pitchblack. The batteries last for ages, probably because the current draw is infinitesimal when it's bypassed. It gives you a warning when the battery is dying, and if it does die mid-gig, it defaults to bypassed, so no embarrassing silences. I have had the original TC Polytune on my big guitar pedalboard since they came out. I use it in strobe mode. The polyphonic mode is ok for quickly working out which string(s) have gone out, but it invariably gives a different result when you go to tune just one string. Also it does create some noise whilst tuning, but this could be because I don't have it running on an isolated power supply. For all other purposes it's the Snark clip-on. I have 3 secreted in various places!

  3. My favourite phaser is the MXR Phase 100. It's now on my guitar pedalboard and I used to use it on bass.
  4. I've had a couple of Laney guitar amps, an LC15 and a VC30, which I enjoyed while I had them. Unfortunately my first bass amp was a Laney 100W combo - need I say any more?
  5. This is (I think) the original Blue Mikey. It has a dock connector for fitting to older-style iPods etc - it doesn't fit the more recent models with a Lightning connector. It definitely doesn't work with my iPad though. The mic itself has 3 different sensitivity settings. To use it, plug it into your device, then open Voice Memos and choose the quality setting you want. When you're done, either delete or save. When you connect your iPod to your computer it automatically transfers the recording into your Voice Memos folder. Simples! Comes in original box with instructions. £22 delivered in UK.

  9. Short scales definitely bring something different to the party. We often think of 34in as the 'standard' scale length, but it was really just an informed guess by Leo Fender, somewhere between the 41in+ of the double bass and 24-25in of the guitar.
  10. The MU standard contract contains a clause plainly stating that the kit is not for the use of the client, but I doubt any of those bozos would have had sight of your booking agreement!
  11. Get an American Vintage Reissue - used if you can find one. The finish will soon pick up dings, and you'll have the best of both worlds.
