2. My favourite phaser is the MXR Phase 100. It's now on my guitar pedalboard and I used to use it on bass.
3. I've had a couple of Laney guitar amps, an LC15 and a VC30, which I enjoyed while I had them. Unfortunately my first bass amp was a Laney 100W combo - need I say any more?
4. This is (I think) the original Blue Mikey. It has a dock connector for fitting to older-style iPods etc - it doesn't fit the more recent models with a Lightning connector. I used it with my 160GB iPod to make live gig and rehearsal recordings like this brief (mono) clip: My Generation bass solo It may also work with older iPhones but I can't guarantee it. It definitely doesn't work with my iPad though. The mic itself has 3 different sensitivity settings. To use it, plug it into your device, then open Voice Memos and choose the quality setting you want. When you're done, either delete or save. When you connect your iPod to your computer it automatically transfers the recording into your Voice Memos folder. Simples! Comes in original box with instructions. £22 delivered in UK.
5. Kala U-bass and Markbass 801 - you can barely see it under my seat!
6. Chord tones are probably the most important things to know. Work your way through this free online tutorial at your own pace: http://www.studybass.com/study-guide/
7. On a Mac, CMD+TAB does the same thing.
8. Short scales definitely bring something different to the party. We often think of 34in as the 'standard' scale length, but it was really just an informed guess by Leo Fender, somewhere between the 41in+ of the double bass and 24-25in of the guitar.
9. The MU standard contract contains a clause plainly stating that the kit is not for the use of the client, but I doubt any of those bozos would have had sight of your booking agreement!
10. Get an American Vintage Reissue - used if you can find one. The finish will soon pick up dings, and you'll have the best of both worlds.
11.
I've been using one of these for years. Fantastic bit of kit even if the tech is a little old by todays standards. A bargain at this price.
Thanks gelfin, can't argue with that! OK some more pluses and minuses as they occur to me: Plus 250 virtual tracks for storing alternative takes Main and monitor outputs Digital in and out on SPDIF coax connectors Real faders and pan pots for all 16 record/playback channels plus master fader Real gain pots for all 8 analog input channels - ideal for location recording, compared to the costly 8-channel interface you would need if using with a software DAW on a laptop or tablet 6 rotary encoders to the right of the display, for quick access to channel EQ and FX settings Minus The hard drive can make a bit of acoustic noise Not the easiest bit of kit to learn (but easier than Roland kit IMO!) I am pretty open on the trades front - if in doubt, drop me a PM Any tech questions about the machine, ask them here or follow the link to the manuals. Here's something I recorded recently on the DPS16:
12. 'I'll just get an inexpensive bass to use for home recording', that's what I said to myself all those years ago...
13. Swindon has a fairly busy live music scene, especially for a town that some would consider a cultural wasteland.
14. Rehearse your stage moves. Seriously. If you practise playing while staying still, that's what you'll do on stage. Try your moves at home in front of a mirror, and do them at rehearsal.
