1.
Blame it on the Boogie- singer requested we learn it and it's chock full great touches, really enjoying trying to nail the syncopation and swing.
This, plus 'Heavyweight Champion of the World' by Reverend and the Makers.
2. I recently sold my venerable Akai DPS16 stand-alone DAW on this very forum, in favour of Reaper recording software. In the process of transferring over the digital audio files that I wanted to save, I found a short instrumental track that I recorded on a Roland VS840 in the early 2000's. The guitar parts were originally put down using the VS840's own amp sims and effects, and sounded somewhat thin; the organ and bass parts were created with a GR30 guitar synth (long gone); and the drum parts came from Alesis SR16 presets. As a way of learning Reaper, I set about re-recording all the parts as follows. Everything except the drums went through a Roland Quad Capture interface. I realise the bass is low in the mix, but this is very much guitar-driven music. Drums - MT Power Drum Kit plug-in - amazing value as it is a free download, dead easy to drag and drop patterns into a MIDI track and edit them to taste. If you don't like their kit, you can output the MIDI notes to another module. Bass - Fender Mustang bass > Cali76 compressor > Markbass 801 combo > DI out Guitar 1 - Gretsch Duo Jet > Cali76 > Deluxe Memory Man > Swart STR > DI via Behringer GI100 Guitar 2 - Strat via same route Organ - Korg X50 'Dirty BX3' Here is Surf Monster
3. Not really GASing for anything bass-related at the moment, but experiencing a bit of a home recording renaissance so no doubt that will throw up something I can't possibly live without.
4. Welcome aboard. Your gear may be modest now, but you will soon find yourself spending large sums of money on equipment that you suddenly realise you need...
5. My theory as to why 3-pickup basses have never been particularly successful: The extreme pickup positions (right next to the bridge and neck) rarely sound that great; one is honky and thin, the other flubby and over-fat. If you restrict pickup placement to the zone that does sound good, then that limits you to one or too pickups.
6.
An improvement, but only because the original's a candidate for most over-rated song of the 21st century.
Each to his own - I had it down as one of the best songs Prince never wrote. I liked it so much I bought the download, but I have to admit my listening pleasure has diminished somewhat with playing it so many times on gigs! (Likewise Dakota, Sex On Fire, Valerie, Mr Brightside...)
7. I've got one but you can't have it. Sorry.
8. I enjoyed that very much. I like a cover that takes a song somewhere different.
9. Tony bought a DAW from me, and the way he dealt with payment was exemplary. UPS seem to have used a numpty agency driver, but Tony encouraged me in my efforts to contact them and helped by speaking to them himself, and between us we got delivery sorted. He even sent a picture of the parcel to reassure me that it had arrived undamaged. I would have no hesitation in dealing with Tony as buyer or seller.
10.
Flats for me too. Are flats the bass equivalent, in trendiness terms, of sporting a big beard?
Absolutely not!
11. Isabelle bought a mic from me, no problems here!
12. Cheap = crap Best quality/price ratio is our very own OBBM, aka RockWire cables.
13.
In this song, I can play some of the 12-string guitar part on the bass ...
Huh?
14. This is the Yamaha cousin to my Fender '73:
15. The Monkees - Hey Hey We're the Monkees
16. Index. But there are times when it makes sense to break that rule...
17. WITHDRAWN - just realised I can run a channel of this into my Cali76 to make a killer vocal channel strip for recording!
18. I've bought slightly-used flats to see whether I like them, and sold flats that I bought new and found I didn't like. It's a cost-effective way of trying different types, and cuts down on waste of valuable metals.
19. Come on folks, standalone DAW value-for-money doesn't come any better than this! Collection/meet-up Swindon or Oxford areas.
20. I think there's only Zoom still making them, but even their R16 doubles as a controller for your software DAW.
21. Bass, backing vocals, PA, website. The drummer sorts the gigs.
22.
Just found this 'au contraire' article. http://menga.net/adv...ale-bass-guitar
I read that article, and it contains a very obvious non sequitur: '... when you string up a short scale set that was originally meant for long scale, the balance goes completely out, resulting in overtones.' The last statement does not follow from the first. Neither does it accord with my experience of using Chromes on short-scales. So don't panic!
23. I have a pair of Beyer DT150 'phones. They are great for recording with a sensitive mic as they provide excellent acoustic isolation, but too tiring and bass-heavy for other uses. My go-to 'phones are the Sennheiser HD201 - so cheap I got 2 pairs, comfy and quite well balanced. I think I would always want to check a mix through speakers though.
