That daft, bloated headstock has always looked naff too.
This. The rest is okay, as it's upscaled to match the spacing @ the bridge. Taper to the nut looks extreme, though. As for the headstock, even more suited to kayaking than a Warwick

Buying a Punisher might have been better?
This Get a bass that you like the sound and feel of. Funk comes from the player not the bass.
Especially if you neglect to wash regularly.... (Or is that too American?)
Never take any notice of volume knobs.. If your amp is loud enough, it is loud enough..if it isn't then you have a decision to make. Comparing ratings ect ect between amps is pretty pointless, IMO. Don't worry about it..as long as it performs and you like the sound, that is about it IMV
+the one. Provided that your cab is not obviosly dying as a result!
This is what I use (for some gigs, too..!). Headphone & AUX inputs, too.
Well, that for starters! Otherwise, my 80w 1x12 80's Demon Combo. Or Pandora w/ Sennheiser HD215 (mk1) Or 8-track mixer/QSC 1202/Trace 2103 or 1153 (Turn it down, Alex!) Okay. That last one might be a bit much!

Mine was a total surprise. Yep. The Musos say; Argh! That Vigier singsin the studio! My Wife, upon viewing a video of a recent performance said; "Cor, that bass is PHAT!" (In reference to my recently acquired Warwick Fortress MM5) Not an entirely uninformed opinion. She knows what good sounds like! Playing weren't too shoddy neither.... C'mon. Share your high points!!!!!

I saw this. I thought; "Babooshka" Post #3. Saves me the bother. Point proven. Amen. The End. Awesome. RIP Mr. Martyn. Damn shame.

A thought occurs... I don't think the MEC Eq is going to be very user-serviceable. If you elect to change the pre, go to a shop and try the bass (in passive mode) through some of the stomp-box equivalents of on-board pre-amps (thinking specifically of the Aguilar Tone Hammer here). It might give you an indication of what to expect if you change the MEC Eq for another brand. Maybe consider a unit with 3 bands, a mid-freq sweep and a passive tone control. That'd surely get you close to what you wanted (?)
i'd replace the preamp and/or pickups in the warwick. i had a similar feeling about my fortress...loved the feel of it but didn't get on with the sound. i got hold of some bartolini pickups and put a glockenklang pre and it's the business now.
Yup. This. If you sell the SS1, you'll end up regretting it. It's good to have a variety of basses. Ok, you like your P-bass. That's great. Doesn't mean you have to go and buy more of them, though! IIRC, if you pull up the volume contol on the SS1, it'll run in passive mode. How does it sound then? If still not close to what you require, consider changing the pick-ups first? Edit- DUH! should've read your posts about it before suggesting it! Okay, maybe swap out the pre-amp, then!

It's just as well that Mr DiMarzio saved me from all that Piano-making, trombone-blowin', outboard motoring, lawn-mowin' "blandness" This Attitude has no build quality flaws, let me assure you. Only issue it has is that sound engineers keep assuming it's active and ask me to turn the bottom end down... How it pains me to explain that I can't! Bland paint job, too.
I paid £590 for my Thumb BO a couple of years back. Given that it was a 1999 model with a wenge neck and looked brand new I thought that was alright!
I paid £515 for a '97 Fortress MM5 recently. That was alright, too. It's a stonking bass and a bit of a 'Ray killer (IMO)
Er, wasn't it Ned Steinberger? (And for some reason, when I first read your post, I thought you were saying Stuart Zender designed it ... brain not quite functioning tonight )
Mine Neither. It might well have been Ned Steinberger. It certainly wasn't Stuart Zender!
I haven't played a bolt-on Thumb but neck dive isn't an issue with my '91 neck-thru model. I agree that the first fret can seem a long way away though. If I had to pound out a riff based around the low F for 5 minutes I would be cursing the ****ing thing when I was done.
My Infinity SN4 suffers with this also. It's the combination of down-sized body, short horns and 26 fret necks.
ive got two fortesses and a streamer jazzman! i love the sound of each very versatile and great players, ive never owned a thumb (although alsways wanted too) i guess the thumb would hold value more? but either way a 'wick is a 'wick and theyre great to own you wouldnt regret buying either
I have an InfinitySN4, Streamer LX6 and a Fortress MM5. All quite different, yet all identifiable as Warwicks. The Streamer JazzMan is superb bass. I'd recommend the OP try as many Warwicks as they can find, and only leave out the ones that you really don't like the look of... Try Fortresses (now discontinued), Corvettes, Katanas, Vampyres, Dolphins, Thumbs, Streamers and anything else that turns up....
I have nothing to add other than: OP's username + thread title = even more hilarity
+1 great minds think alike, and you've saved the world from my dastardly witticisms...

Thumbs vary more from instrument, given that there are two core models- Neck Thru and Bolt on. The pick-ups can vary (Bartolini or MEC), as can their placement. AFAIK all have 3 band EQ. Streamers come in at least 5 variants (in no order); Streamer LX Streamer Jazzman Streamer $$ Streamer Stage 1 Streamer Stage 2 All available in 4 and 5 string models, with the LX and (IIRC) the Stage 1 as 6 stringers as well. they come with 2 or 3 band EQ dependent on model. Thumbs are very dense and seem heavy for a relatively small body, but that's part of why they sound the way they do. Thumbs have 26 fret necks, and this can cause balance issues. They also tend to jump off of your lap due to the lower body shape. No such issues with a Streamer. If you like that shape, do consider the fact that Spector make this body shape also. In fact, Stuart Spector designed it....

There are solutions out there... Keep your old (Non Neo) cabs, fit castors, get a gym membership and/or a chiropractor. Use Modular rigs- 2x2x10 instead of a 4x10- 2 trips, but less weight in each trip. Yes, I know Neo cabs are good, but if this is what's going to happen, people will just seek alternatives, in whatever form they may manifest themselves.

I reckon you'd definitely want inlaid lines on the fingerboard, just to keep you straight. Worse still, any failings in your intonation will be made all the more obvious by the higher of the pair of strings as they'll be easier t hear due to their higher pitch. Add to that any "beating" sounds caused by a variance in the pitch between the two octave strings, and your technique will have to be spot-on to avoid these issues. Don't be down-hearted. Fretless guitars exist. Vigier make them. If you're playing chords on those, You'd have to be Sh*t hot to get them to ring true. Still, if guitards can cope....
I've come into possession of a 91 Streamer Stage1 NT which needs a refret. Never refretted a wenge board before, do I need to treat wenge any differently from rosewood? And, yes, I've ordered brass frets, I'm not a criminal
G'wan, put stainless steel ones in it... It'll be unique. Charic is right. Wenge dust (and Paduak) is not good for you...

Only sold three in total. One on here, and that was a bit hit-and-miss One via Ebay and that was fine One via Ebay, then the buyer dropped out. Then, out of the blue, another bidder contacted me directly. Sold for £200 more than similar ones on here (mine was virtually perfect, though) Both of us were happy. Really Nice guy. Cash on collection, too. Bought one on here. Excellent transaction (Thanks BigJim!) The vendor let me put a deposit on it and pay the balance on collection. Went very smoothly for me, hopefully for Jim, too. There was a little bit of "PM Tennis" to finalise everything, but nothing too excessive. I think the tyre-kicking/time-wasting/low offering syndrome as perceived by sellers is caused by money being so tight right now. Buyers want an absolute bargain, "Bass X", or nothing. No half measures, no in-betweens. No-one can afford to take a chance at the moment. I held a bass on deposit for a BCer. BigJim did it for me. I genuinely think that this compromise represents the way forward for us. Mike at Iceni let me walk out with £200 owing on a bass. I paid him the very instant I had the funds. I did the same (albeit via a credit agreement) at PMT on a Warwick Infinity SN4. That cost £900 in all, and was a bargain. Buyers on here know exactly what they want and what they should be getting. I understand and respect that. It IS depressing trying to sell at the moment, primarily because prices are rock-bottom (Cheap Warwick, anyone?) There's more luck to be had on Ebay/Gumtree/Preloved when selling. There's more luck to be had on BassChat when buying. That's the Status Quo right now, but it will re-balance itself in time. I know that doesn't help those selling multiple items to finance Smiths/Statii/Sados/Celinders/Alembics/Wals/Vigiers and so on, but it might be better to sit back, enjoy your collections and wait out this recession......

Calling owners of basses with a pickup *close* to the neck
Lfalex v1.1 replied to Ancient Mariner's topic in Bass Guitars
Might as well sell this, then, seeing as it sounds really bassy with no character. Except it isn't overly so, and has bags of character. -
China is buying up sources of many raw materials so this problem will be more common in the future!
China already had the bulk of global supplies of Neodymium anyway. It didn't need to buy them, just mine them. Samarium Cobalt anyone?!
