Stuart Adamson / The Skids / Big Country
Lfalex v1.1 replied to skankdelvar's topic in General Discussion
https://youtu.be/fNjcunc8U5s I think this sums up Stuart / Big Country rather well. Especially where they pick up again so smoothly. -
Vino Palladino?

^^^ If I were retired, I'd be doing that, too. Alas that my work schedule is incompatible with any such activity (another reason that I hate gigging- and work, too) I've been working working for nearly 34 years, and retirement still seems an aeon away. Not wishing to be unduly grim, but Death in Service is looking quite likely. That or medical severance on ill health grounds (I'm fine at the moment!)

Virtually nothing. Not a great fan of Maple 'boards, nor of Gold Hardware. Neither are deal-breakers, though. Edit- I will walk away from poorly set-up instruments in shops if the retailer won't address the issue. I've walked away from a Burns Bison whose strings were all flat to the board at the right tension (!) and a Status Electro fretless that didn't have a 9v battery- shop said they didn't have a spare (!) I just put the basses down and walked out. That says more for the retailers than the instruments, though

Jazz bass - passive or active?? Sire V7 owners thoughts are wlecome...
Lfalex v1.1 replied to carlsim's topic in Bass Guitars
Use them as a complimentary pair? And when playing live; Core tone from the bass DI >>>> the desk EQ the amp to compensate for "on stage" sound issues. -
Why air freight them at all? Stick them (!) In a container and pop it on a cargo vessel.

When I did gig, it was without exception, late, far from home and I had a car full of gear. I just used to drive home ASAP.

IF I could even rearrange my life to accommodate being in a band, learn all the material and find the money to rehearse and travel to gigs, I'm sure I'd remember why I hate gigging. At the moment, the concept seems marvelous. The reality would be a tired, broke me standing at the back of a stage looking like Wednesday Addams.

Because: Warwick Tuner QC. I've had 1 fail and 3 plus the replacement are all on the way out. Once I have the money, time and inclination, I'll see if I can find some Hipshots or proper Schallers to replace them. I'd imagine the Schallers would be a straight drop-in. Not sure about the Hipshots. I'd rather not have a headstock like Swiss Cheese just because Warwick gave up on the quality of their tuners.

That's better. Not sure what "comfortability" is. Maybe a portmanteau of comfort and ability? 🤣

Bleugh. 🤮 I don't like tort at the best of times, but binding and inlays? What possessed them? Hopefully this won't become a fashion or I'll have to give up playing altogether in order to avoid ever coming into contact with one.

Last I looked at the Strings and Things site, it looked like it was wholesale only 😔

I found this recently on JoinMyBand. Surely it's a joke? If not, run away!

I think this clarifies some of my instrument choices; I love a bass with a bridge pickup suitably close to the bridge. Suits my playing style and tonal preferences. Hence my owning an SB-2 Tribute as depicted.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record... (regarding capos) Beg, borrow or steal a capo. Get your lightest, best balanced bass. Give it to your daughter and see where she can reach. Place capo there and de-tune it such that its tuned EADG ("open" strings with the capo on) At least she can get a feel for the instrument that way. Definitely not a permanent solution, and it'll throw out any attempts at learning some theory aspects as the dots won't be in the right places etc. Might give you an insight into a comfortable scale length for her, too.

Stingray with roundwounds?

That looks nice.

I was referring to the electronics in my Vigier Series III, which, whilst not being balanced adhere to the 600 ohm standard. I've been able to use 10metre cables with no discernable issues.
-
That's interesting. The two passive basses to which I was particularly referring are a Yamaha Attitude and a G&L SB-2 Tribute. With DiMarzo and G&L MFD pickups respectively. I certainly wouldn't say that the pickups were the most natural or neutral around (hardly, in either case!) but apart from that, the responsiveness in both is first rate. Perhaps because I can play a little hard with my plucking hand, I cause 9v active systems coupled to low output (passive) pickups to sound compressed. 18v electronics/active pickups or hot passive pickups seem to suffer less in this respect.

If it were to happen, the ones that didn't sell would sit there "clogging up" the forum, creating more to sift through. It could just as easily happen in the bottom end of the >£750 forum, with sellers trying to avoid dropping into the <£750 forum. Creating an arbitrary division in the for sale forum is likely to be just that. Divisive.

In my experience (and we're all different and play different instruments for different reasons), passive instruments sound more "immediate" There's less evidence of sonic tampering going on with the sound. Better EQ systems are usually less intrusive sounding. One of the bonuses of active setups is that extremes of EQ are easily available, and adjustments, big or small can be made on the fly. Active pickups are another story again, as are low-impedance outputs. Two of my favourite basses are almost polar opposites in active/passive terms. I like the tone and playability of both.
