Do they offer the J/Twinjazz pickup configuration (as per Dolphin, Infinity) That's a good one, and the TwinJazz can be coil-tapped to give you JJ. As for the body? Quilted, but for one reason only; Many, many Streamers, Corvettes Fortresses, Katanas, etc etc. are Flamed Maple as standard. I've owned 2 myself. If you're going to the expense and trouble of getting one made to your spec, it might as well look different to the run-of-the-mill production models.

Some good ideas, and neat solutions to existing issues (that have been addressed in different ways by other designs) I'm unsure about how the length of string immediately ahead of the ball-end interacts with the pin/ affects the mass of the vibrating portion of the string. Oh.. and no string spacing adjustment.

I use a cheap (£80) table-top mixing desk. It has enough gain to work with anything I've ever plugged into it. It has stereo (RCA) inputs for an MP3 player etc. It'll drive any headphones I've encountered, has an output that I run to a tuner, and can phantom power any fx units that have XLR connectors (and will take it)

I used the cabinet part of a Trace combo (122HSMX), added a speaker terminal and plugged all sorts of amps into it, including a QSC PLX 1202 bridged to give 1200wrms into 4ohms. The drivers were 2x10 Celestions rated at 160w and 8ohms in total. The cab took more than anyone could withstand in terms of volume and never showed any signs of distress. I didn't /don't use any nasty fx like an octave or synth, but nor did I run a compressor. I reckon you're fairly safe with the 450w Peavey, as long as you don't run it too hard for too long.

At the very least buy a custom instrument of which you are uncertain second-hand. Then the original owner takes the monumental depreciation hit. AND you potentially get to try before you buy, too.

Maybe over time, you learn to get the best from any given instrument and adjust your playing to suit?

+3dB in the same environment roughly equates to a doubling in sound pressure levels. The 400 ought to be tangibly louder than the 200 if using the same cabs.

Vaguely reminiscent of the Yamaha SBV headstock. But How much? (I find myself thinking this about many basses, but more than usual in this case) It'd have to be quite something for me to reach for the debit card. I'd have to have played one first and it for it to have been demonstrably better than an Ibanez Talman or a P bass (etc)

You might struggle to put it on top. Trace combos are shallower than their equivalent cabinets (to keep the weight down) The matching cabs are the 2103(h) for 2x10 or 1153 for the 1x15. The combo and cab combined will give you a ~4Ohm load for the amp stage, and that'll deliver 280-300wrms. It'll only give about half that into its own driver (8ohm) Edit - I believe the 2103(h) has the greater power handling if you intend to "push it"

5. But I'm less sure about the custom aspect. I've had 2 custom instruments. The clue is that the statement is in the past tense. On paper, they were fine. In practice, they weren't so good. Even if you know what you want to the Nth degree, the outcome depends on the luthier's ability to actually realise your vision. I'd never do it again. I could, however, be tempted to build what i wanted from parts and learn as I go along.

I'd thought to find a suitably rated standard lamp cable with a switch and use an IEC1 or 2 terminated lead minus the plug to make up the half of the lead from switch onwards. I making this up as i go along, btw! 🤣

Why not fashion a power lead (assuming it's not captive at the amp end!) With an in-line power switch? You can then position it in your board to be used as required. Then just leave the TC's power switch permanently "on"...

If you mean an 8 string without effects vs. A 4 string with an octave pedal; The octaved 4 will have the original string frequency and an octave lower. The 8 string will have the usual pitching of the 4 plus an octave higher. You'd need a pitch-shifter set to up an octave and a roughly 50/50 wet/dry mix to even get close. Both the octave pedal and pitch-shifter will exhibit some tracking errors or delay. The 8 string is just... Boom. It's there. An 8 string through an octave pedal? A mess, at a guess. Edit- unless the bass has separate outputs for the different courses of strings. That could be good.

I know not of what thou speakest. None of mine basses hath such bizarre accoutrements, for I playest with mine fingers exclusively.

Call me an aesthete (and I'm not normally) but there are two deadly faux pas relating to F-holes that I simply couldn't tolerate; 1) wiring showing in the lower one 2) pale, untreated wood showing through the hole. Paint it! Preferably black. Otherwise, I'd quite like one. But I'm not sure what for! 🤣

I know there are many variables (especially active pickups) but broadly speaking, I agree with this from my experience. I'd hazard a guess that (hopefully) the onboard EQ has been voiced (or at least selected) to complement the instrument. A pedal won't have been, as its brief is much broader. And then there's the rack-mountable pre-amps and EQs. I have an old Ampeg SVP-Pro, and thats a different flavour again. But the valves would have something to do with that..
