Looking to add a Ramp to my Warwick, opinions needed!
Lfalex v1.1 replied to Bill's topic in Bass Guitars
I did a mock-up in MDF at home for one of mine once. Just used an old off-cut, and sanded it to roughly match the fretboard radius. Maybe try a DIY one before you splash out? -
^^^^ that's what I thought of first. Must be getting old...

bass and it's effects on marriages

Hold on. Let's just put this in its correct context. I've been playing bass 3 times longer than I've been married... -

In all likelihood, the labour tied up in the making of the ramp will be the greatest factor in its eventual cost. Otherwise, I'd guess that in terms of cost, Maple < Wenge < Ebony. But Ebony will come closest to matching the pickup cases, and feels really nice to the touch. (Good idea, I hadn't considered it!) I wonder if it's possible to get the same resin that the pickup housings are made from, and use that? -
I thought what was being found scary was my lack of ability to tell what pickups are good simply by their electrical properties.
Well, almost. It is mildly scary that no-one can begin to determine a pickup's performance from its technical specifications. This gives at least two problematic scenarios that occur irrespective of your electrical engineering background: 1) I've acquired this random black lump of resin/metal/wire. How the hell do I know if it's any good. 2) I want to upgrade my existing pickups. How on earth do I work out where to start when tech specs are all I have to go on, and they don't exactly tell the whole story. Pickups aren't cheap, and it's a minefield out there...

Where do you want it to go? Between the pickups? I'd try to source some Wenge that matches the fretboard. The next question would be: How are you going to fix it to the bass? Does it need to be adjustable- if so, it'll likely need screwing to the body somehow. Otherwise, consider the Gary Willis method- double-sided tape! As I don't slap, I'd love a ramp that was simply a continuation of the fretboard, and ran right from the leading edge of the bridge pickup to the fretboard. Difficult on your W because of the way the fretboard blends into the body. Edit- it'll also be a pain to contour the underside to match the curve on the top face of the Streamer... -
Would you be friends with the people in your band if...
I don't dislike anyone I've worked with ... I think you should at least be able to tolerate people.
Well, there's my problem right there. I can't abide work, and many of my "colleagues" are simply Satan's apostles in disguise. By the time I'm done at work, 1) There is no time 2) I'm utterly "peopled-out" So I just can't commit to this band stuff. In the past, I have generally found the drummers to be the good guys. With the odd notable exception. -
John Hall and the Litigators.
Who would doubtless pick fights with; Ibanez and the Imitators If they were at the same gig
I carry both my Corvettes (4 and 5) in a Hiscox Liteflite and they fit beautifully. The only thing to watch is that they're a bit arse heavy, so the balance can be a bit iffy!
That's true of most basses in the said cases. Unless they're really light..
-
I should think one of the regular Hiscox liteflite cases will fit. Fits all of these; Streamer Infinity Jazz Precision Vigier Passion Stingray 5 But not a Fortress 5.. To horn is just too high/long. Don't think the 'Vette is quite as... Er.... Protuberant, so it ought to fit!
Testes, testes, 1...2.....3!?? (Thanks Beavis and Butthead)
Would've been my suggestion also...

The various eq manufacturers' sites often have this sort of info. All I know is the ones I've used and liked, and the ones I've used and haven't liked. Worst? Fender and Status Best? The one in my NS CR5 The Vigier is good, but the fixed boost/cut is a bit extreme The MEC 2 band is OK. Never tried any bespoke ones. I'd expect East and whatnot to be good/flexible. Edit +/- 12 or 15dB is not uncommon..
Two separate leads out of the L/R channels into two separate DI boxes then onto the desk?
It's all more boxes, more boxes, MORE BOXES! I thought the whole idea is that it's a one box fix for all your bass playing woes. Guess not. Edited for- If they'd made it phantom powerable and given it two XLRs, you'd be able to jettison the power adaptor and two DI boxes from your gig bag.Add an aux "in" 3.5mm socket for external sources, and it'd be perfect. Wouldn't mind if it cost £100 more if it had those.
You're obviously missing the bigger picture. It's not just a live tool. I'm sure you will find something more suitable.
I'd mainly use it at home, but don't want cables/boxes all over the place. No single device does what I need. Back to the Pandora, then. That gets closest to catering for my requirements.
Cool. But why not do the back of the headstock and neck too while you're at it?
Both my Vigier and Yamaha are done on the back. But the necks are painted, too. Hell, they even did the sides, too. And the fretboards match! I know some hate painted necks, but it bothers me not one iota.
-
Was seriously considering one of these. Then I RTFM online. No auxiliary in for MP3 player, so I'll have to break out my mixer... At least I can phantom power it via XLR... Nope. And if I could it'd be in MONO. What's the point of stereo effects if you can only send a mono feed to the desk? Jack of all trades, master of none, I fear. It could sound phenomenal, but the power leads are too fragile even for heavy domestic use, and the lack of appropriate connectivity hamstrings an otherwise good unit. Off to sulk now.

The band I play in. Apparently we're sexual deviants...
Lfalex v1.1 replied to far0n's topic in General Discussion
The grammatical issues arise from one person purporting to represent several. That it has been done so badly suggests that the author of the letter rarely does so. That, or they suffer from some sort of multiple personality disorder. How does this individual know the names of the band members? It's quite unusual for venue owners to acquaint themselves with bands this closely. I conclude that this letter has been sent by an envious spouse/partner or perhaps another band wishing to harm your excellent reputation. A "hoax", but an unintentionally amusing one that can surely only serve to improve the standing of your band in today's depraved public arena. /Sherlock Holmes. NICE ONE ! -
lol... I'm sorry I even suggested it!

New bass pickups - Anybody got info on these?
Lfalex v1.1 replied to MiltyG565's topic in Bass Guitars
IIRC, many of the s2 and s3 Vigiers had single-coils in big housings. Nearly all were of Benedetti manufacture. Mine has, and it's a '97. Just off to have a Google -
Interesting replies, very informative thanks. Wonder if Yamaha will ever do a JJ version as well as the PJ configuration? It might win over some Jazz bass fans. Cheers Garry
Jazz fans will be wanting at least VVT controls. No pick-up selector switches.. Probably the main reason I've never bought any of them.
Sorry for the nihilistic tone...
No need for apologies. What gear do you use to get your nihilistic tone? Or is it all in the fingers?
I have to agree with this - unfortunately I wasn't chosen. I had a Kingbass for about 5 minutes and really couldn't get on with it. It was the fastest sale of an instrument I've ever I've ever made I do know people that love these though - a real marmite bass if ever there was one.
I wasn't chosen either. I tried one chez Status, and the damn thing wouldn't hang right on me. Even Dawn said so. I bought a Streamline instead. And what a waste of money that had proven to be... I have basses that cost a third as much that don't look/feel like a toy, and sound better...
In all honesty, I`m yet to find a bass I really don`t get on with...
Same for me, but it's a matter of degree. Most are fine, but my least favourites from my collection are the Yamaha Attitude- modelled on a '51 "P", and the Warwick Infinity SN4. The Yamaha is wide at the nut and deep. The Warwick is slim at the nut, but even deeper. Proper baseball bat territory! I tolerate it because it's not that much of an issue, an the tone is great. Best necks? Vigier, Stingray 5, Fender Jazz, and (oddly) My NS CR5 EUB...
