1.
Okay, that's interesting.. I had a look at that EDB600 seems a good bass but what is the difference with it being Luthite?
The OLD Ergodynes (EDA, EDB and EDC) were made from plastic. In this case, a plastic named Luthite, which is not dissimilar from the resin used to manufacture (tenpin) bowling balls. The newer ones are wood. I guess Ibanez bought themselves a decent CNC router! I haven't tried the wooden ones, but the Luthite one I had was suitably "clean" sounding. Alas, Luthite is quite brittle, and when mine fell off the sofa, it broke rather terminally. The Luthite ones can still be had secondhand, but they tend to chip and flake rather than "ding" like wooden ones!
2. God! I Hate sites like this! I can't do a damn thing with it. It hates my browser. It hates my screen resolution. Japanese webpage design is simply odd, and that doesn't help either.
3.
I also like the idea of active basses with the onboard EQ, so much more advanced than my 2 pickup volumes and a master tone control. But I think i will try one out
More [s]advanced[/s] complicated? Yes. Necessarily better? Well, no, as YMMV.. The SR500 is a comfortable, ergonomically sound instrument that plays really well. In isolation, they tend to sound more impressive (That's most mid-price Ibanez, not just the SR500) than they do in the mix. I bought an SRX700 on the strength of its playability and tone. It was great in the shop, but had this irritating tonal quality right across the range. It would just "HONK" (and not in the good, nasal Jazz bass way) and lacked any top end sparkle or bottom weight that an active eq might tame or enhance. You just got variations with less or more upper or lower honk depending on how you set the EQ. That said, I had a (Luthite) Ergodyne EDB600 that was really stupidly good for the £80 I paid for it. Its spec was closer to the SR500, so it may be better. Mind you, Dave Pegg was sounding quite irritating playing his SR505 with Fairport Convention on TV a couple of months back. I was not alone in not liking it, either. I guess the best thing (as always) is to try before you buy!
4. In all honesty, whilst some of the bands I've been in have had at least their fair share of arseholes, none of them have ever brought about a song stoppage. That's only ever happened due to guitarists breaking strings, and then only twice in about 12 years. One guitarist used to open one of our songs (which was in F#) in either Fb or E#. I don't know what he thought he was doing.
5. Nothing at all, really. GAS is hibernating. [/bah humbug]
6. Highway 1 might be worth a look... I've played some good 'uns.
7.
There is an industrial unit in Warwick that stocks almost everything mentioned in this thread
Which would be fine were it not a 5-600 mile round-trip. That's 60 litres of fuel. Or £84 to £90. Not to mention the time it'd take! And, to be honest, I'm not interested in buying an instrument online. I want to play it first... And then decide.
8.
I don't want to sound like a dork or anything but aren't the specifications a little bit off?
Maybe the magnetic pick-ups are hiding under that ramp?
9.
I have a bass with 2 J-type pickups and 4-way rotary switch to give each pickup on its own and both pickups together wired either in parallel or series.
That's quite a nice idea, as long as you don't want to blend the pick-ups. Hopefully the series setting is buffered in some way to stop the output being too much higher than the parallel or single coil settings.(The EBMM Ray 5 has this, as well as a phantom coil to suppress hum in single coil mode)
10.
I thought this was going to say: "....to convert to the right!"
It worked for Sweden.
11.
I learnt a new word today.
What? Bifurcated? I just keep looking at it (the headstock) and thinking "SNAP!" Not that I'd wish that on anyone, but one good prang, and I fear it would no longer be..... Bifurcated. Just broken.
12. Trouble is, even the most reliable people are apt to being flaky eventually. People's circumstances change, and so do their motives. In the case of previously cited "bigger bands", I think you'll find that big stacks of money dramatically improve band cohesion. I had a drum machine that went flake-o-tronic. It can happen to anyone.
13. I'd just like to thank everyone for NOT posting pictures of this monstrosity. I Googled it, and.... OH! My eyes! Meanwhile, in the Fender/Squier HQ: "What do you mean we've got 100,000 too many lefty precision body blanks?!" "'S alright boss! We'll just make some backwards scratchplates, move the controls to the other side and.... BINGO! Precision Reverse Special FSR non-closet-classic BBOT editions will reign supreme!"
14. No mobile site via Droid at the mo' for me. This is via the full site...
15. +1 to most of this. The 'Ray 5 is ok, but better can be had. Secondhand is the way to go, especially if you can try before you buy. I like my Warwick Fortress Masterman 5. Good B string, a bit like a Stingray on steroids. I picked it up on here for just over £500. My Vigier Passion 5 is great, too, but totally different. It just sings, and sounds very consistent across all the strings/frets. As with all such things, trying before buying is a must. You might just stumble upon a gem or a bargain.
16.
30th Anniversary? You sure? Haha!
It's from the future. It's so cool. You should see what it does when it goes over 88dB.....
17. 4 of the 5 gigging bands I've played in were pretty good in many respects. The last was not. The guitarist (and it was "his" band) wouldn't drive more than 10 miles.. Ever, so gigs were difficult, as one of us would have to taxi the Muppet around. He'd screw up loads, and break strings all over the place. This affected the singer's confidence, and she became very nervous. The drummer is a great bloke, and we'd just motor along regardless. The guitarist stepped WAY over the line and abused the organiser of a charity event we were playing, and that was it. The drummer and I apologised to the organiser in person, on the day, and quit by email together that night.
18. Mainly fives for me. Doubt I'd buy another 4 now. To much material with lower notes in to get by with less (for me)
19.
Why not get a 4-channel mini mixer?
I did this, initially as a stop gap, but I found the pre-stages so clean that I stuck with it. It's been great when other bassists share the rig (Phonic mixer into QSC PLX1202 power) Set up one channel each. MUTE the ones you're not using, and off you go!
20. Were/Are the originals Nickel wrapped, then? I really can't see the point in taking steels, Nickel plating them and then coating them! I don't like them on anything with phenolic fretboards (so that's 3 basses out for me!), but they sound great on "woody" sounding instruments. They are on two of my three Warwicks. I use DR Fatbeams and Sunbeams on everything else. I'll have a look at the reviews, though!
21. Er.. (Edited for forgetting that I still have the Raider 1, and that those I still own are in BOLD)
22. "Crime of the Century" by Supertramp. Particularly the title track, which, upon being re-visited, is nothing short of a minor masterpiece: Well written and arranged, with plenty of space for ALL the instruments. Superbly Played. Gets its message across with the bare minimum of lyrics, which are over inside 1m45s. Well recorded and produced, but not glossy Excellent bass sound, plus some Taurus pedals at the end if I'm not much mistook...
23.
Even if your active bass has a particularly high output, it also has a special control which helps you ensure that the optimum signal reaches your preamp ;-)
This!
24.
Is one of them a 3-string?
Now THAT was a bass... I have a Hohner B2A (V) strung like it (with two empty saddles) Have you seen the photo of the remains of his Trace amp after the loft fire that "shrank" the 3-string.
