Do all class D heads really lose their thud at volume?
Chienmortbb replied to alexa3020's topic in Amps and Cabs
As Phil says the amp topology is not the problem. TC were notorious for exaggerating their power output in a subtle way. They named the model after their “algorithm” that estimated the equivalent output power with their magic processing. Firstly it was not magic and secondly it was cheating in the same way as say the sister brand Bugera “estimated” their class D amps at 2000 watts. Despite this amps were not bad per se and I have one of the Bugera’s. 2000 watts it ain’t but it is bloody loud and probably outputting 700-800 watts. Secondly the position of the volume control is no indication of power output. Depending on the output level of the bass, maximum output could be at 12 o’clock or even before. The “ magic” in TC heads is a form of compression and the TC 500 is actually around 300-350 watts into 4 ohms if I remember correctly. -
The Big Fat South-West Bass Bash - Now Sunday 19th September 2021

Sounds like a good description of my playing too. -
Do you have the make? They are like side cutters but some are £5 and useless, my Lindstroms are 40 years old and still sharp.

STRING WARS coming to a theatre near you!

I found the EB Cobalt and the Rotos most to my taste. They both seemed to be bright enough but still have enough low end to enhance the subtle passages. The DRs in particular were not to my liking. Incidently I was listening on my new Panasonic RPHTX90N headphones wired review to follow. -

The Big Fat South-West Bass Bash - Now Sunday 19th September 2021

I hate to be the one to say it but based on the comments at the press conference on Thursday, the maximum of 6 people for will be in place for weeks maybe months. I think that we are now looking at next April! -
We had a wireless mic for the PA at the football club working on the 863-865MHz free band. Once 4G became commonplace, several or so phones close proximity made it useless. We bought a Channel 38 mic and a licence and have not had a problem since.

I just bought some from Tayda. They take a couple of weeks to arrive but AVE a fair selection https://www.taydaelectronics.com/potentiometer-variable-resistors/rotary-potentiometer.html?p=4

Oh dear I have always avoided seeing Beeb bashing on Basschat.

OK I will guess £500 for the pair.

I sold a Westone Thunder 1A and an HH VS to someone about 15 years ago. Wish I still had the Thunder.
-
Back in the day I had an Orange staggered 4x12. Wimps that complain about 8x10s should have tried carting those around. They were the same style as the cab shown above. I also still have an HH VS Bassamp and an HH Bassamp 100, both working well.
-
I could not see that in the BBC article, where did you see it?
-
I lugged two bass cabs at about 13Kgs and two PA tops at about 15Kg into rehearsal on Sunday and my back said thank you when I picked up my modern, lightweight amp. I have no problem with people using heavy amps but please don’t call me out because I have used Solid State amps since my Sound City 100 was stolen in the early 70s.
-
The desiger of the amp will determine the compression, it is not a single preset compression across all valve amps.
-
I am not sure this is quite true. A lot of the sound is shaped by the DSP, even/especially on a flat setting. This can allow the use of speakers that might not be suitable for a passive bass cabinet.

Harley Bentons new bass range! Heads, combos and cabs!
Chienmortbb replied to maidens97's topic in Amps and Cabs
Of course second hand prices are related to the purchase price but I am not sure how the residual value greatly influences the decision to buy. -
It is like cables. I used to like the very bendy cables from Van Damme, they came in colours and didn't tangle. However I had the core break in two separate cables. As I have started making cables for people my main concern is reliability and of course a wireless system and a cable do the same job. It is more hassle that it's worth to chance it with a cable so the same should go for a wireless system. In my former life I used many wireless systems and the professional ones from the big names all worked well under the most. arduous conditions. One day we had a problem at an exhibition with a mic working in the free band. We had to borrow a mic from one of the major brands that were also at the show. Wehad the same problem. All the free bands were swamped. These days the free bands are mainly 863-865MHz FM and 2.4GHz Spread Sectrum. Digital TV and 4G interfere with the FM bands and wifi/bluetooth can smother the 2.4GHz band. Most recently, our guitarist bought one of the early Amoon systems as he was so impressed with my Smoothound. AS soon as he switched it on the Behringer Air mixer we used dropped wifi contact to the devices controlling it. Now the Behringer is very sensitive and most people use it wired with a router, but it never skipped a beat with my Smoothound. Of course if you are using a different mixer there should be no problem BUT there might be. So cheap may work for you but keep a cable handy just in case. As for the Smoothound? It works for me, has never dropped out in use as it constantly searches for the clearest channel. The reciever sits on my pedal board so I can immediately see if there are any problems. Of course in a touring situation things are different. The down sides? Max of four per stage, battery cover is a little flimsy but in all the correspondance I have had with them they have given exceptional service.

I found ground loops tp be the biggest probelm. Neutral on an aircraft is connected to the aluminium chassis of an aircraft and I found that the most troublesome. We would often house the power supply in a separate shielded enclosure.

The amps have a bit of the Ashdown look and most of the Toneman range are now on 3 months delivery, often a sign of discontinuation. No lightweights though. The 300W is heavier than the Toneman 300W. -
You bring back some memories there @agedhorse. I was designing for use in Aircraft and the big problem there was keeping 400Hz out of thr audio chain, as airccraft use 110v 400Hz for the mains. It made for tiny transformers but any residual 400Hz on the audio was far more trouble as the ear is much more sensitive at 400Hz than 50 or 60Hz.

The good old TDA2030, I designed a number of specialist amps with those in the 70s/80s.

Chaos theory says that if the oft quoted butterly was directly in front of the speaker, a sunami would hit Japan soon after.

I did and was a bit surprised. Lpooks like a lovely pub. I am only jealous as we don;t get back to rehearsing until this coming Sunday.
