Nice review Kev. To me it was very useful as you compared it to Berg and other 12s over the year. As others have said, Barefaced cannot cheat Physics but by good design and novel use of established techniques they can make cabinets that compare with anything else on the market. Like others, I hope you continue the thread with your future experience.

Can I use a BDI21 to feed the pa and a stage monitor at the ssme time?

I seem to remember that the speaker gurus at Trace lived the "sound" of MDF over ply. Maybe that preference transferred to Ashdown?

Underhang is fine

That is a tidy rig. It looks as though it means business.

Stevie is right, the driver only arrived last week and we have yet to get the driver and cabinet together. For me there are two goals, two must into my car boot and they must be as light as possible. Of course having said that I realise that I need to measure my boot. I have just gone from a Freelander to a littl Suzuki and space is tight. As Stevie says the revised driver still works well in the original design and if you need one soon, build that one. I suspect it will be some time before any revisions are done to the design, if there are any. Finally thanks to Stevie and Phil. They have so much knowledge and they give us so much of their time.

Nice Charlie. I think you are OK with Basschat's rules as you are not making any money from it.
Nice, but the Magellan has the influence of the main ex-Genz engineer and is £400 cheaper...
That is much nicer looking than the D800 and if you buy an HPF for about £100 you are sorted.

I have just bought one of the new spec SM212 speakers. Phil has. Modelled a good response in a 30 litre box and also that is works well in a sealed box. I confirmed the results of Phil's modelling and have briefly tried out sealed and mis-tuned cabinets. The mistimed cab had a 4db peak at 120Hz and sounded surprisingly good. The sealed cab was good too but I missed the syrupy sound of the ported cab. It is too early to be sure but it looks like a tiny cab can be produced with this driver. My table saw and jigsaw are at my daughter's house at the moment so I cannot build trial cabs at the moment. However if Stevie reads this, you can have the driver for 10-14 days for testing if you would like. PM me!

And it has the most important control of all, a High Pass Filter
Like me, you are obviously not a good bass player.
In the "other forum" there is Mediocre bassist club. Are we in danger of forming one here? Sadly I think I would be eligible for membership. -

Harley Benton 1x15 and 2x10, anyone used one? (Went for two 15s)
Looks like that is what I need but I have no idea how to fit one lol I'll try to do a mic'd recording, I can't really crank it at home but I'll see what I can do. How would I then share it here? I played more with them this morning and do sound good. Seems to have a ton of low end which is nice, even with the bass and low mids backed off to 10o clock there's still lots
Firstly I looked at the 2x10s and they seem enormous. Your 15s lookl just the job. Secondly, where re you in Bucks? i am sometimes in the Slough/Beacosfield area and if you are close I would happily fit tweeter switches for you. -
Power amp options for a kemper profiling amp.
Chienmortbb replied to cliffyspliff's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sorry about weighing in late here. My signal path is (in the main) a Sansamp RBI into a stereo 2U Matrix GT1000. I've been playing for years and years and bar none this is the best poweramp I've ever used. It's loud, transparent, lightweight and runs very cool with little or no fan noise. It comfortably fits into a shallow Gator rack. I spoke to the Matrix guys and they said the 1U version is a bit noisier, but performance is similar. Take a bit of advice from an old soldier; spend a little more and buy a 2U Matrix. It's a wonderful bit of kit.
looked at at Matrix when I\ considered going rack mounted. The designs are target at modelling preamps. They are almost unique in that the use a SMPS power supply and a mosfet Class AB output power amp. The other amps mentioned are fine amplifiers but the Matrix power amps are designed for MI use. -
A vactrol is an opto coupler. It does have better than a home made one though. Many prefer a good VCA ( voltage controlled amplifier ) design and several good designs are available from THAT electronics.
Westone Thunder 3. Had a few since but they weren't the same. Have a Thunder 2 MK2 now, which is exactly the same as a 3. Although, it's a great bass it still wanes in comparison.
Mine was a Thunder 1A. Heavy as hell and I probably could not play it now but I loved that bass. Had a one out, one in, policy from SWMBO at the time so.....

Best bass strap for back issues and weight distribution
Chienmortbb replied to funkyjimbob's topic in Accessories and Misc
A guitar playing pal of mine had a harness made, that sits on both shoulders and spreads the weight. He swears by it. They are available commercially, for example, http://www.slingerst...tar-strap.html. There's a Planet Waves version that's available in this country. May be worth a try.
I tried the Planet waves one but it seemed to put the bass on your hip not on your gut, meaning I was turning around to play. More stress on the back Sold it after 2 weeks. However I had a light weight soft leather (Rotosound) strap on my acoustic and I tried it on my bass. So much more comfortable that the Levys stop I had been using. I'm now considering ordering some leather and making a wider version. -
There is an XLR jack combo that used the standard D size cut out. I also have a Q max cutter if anyone needs help.

Sorry, but there really is no substitute for big iron
Chienmortbb replied to JPJ's topic in Amps and Cabs
As a moderator you are entitled to your opinion like anyone else but should not make unsubstantiated claims. ICEPower amps are designed for many purposes and the ICE part refers to the cool running not In Car Entertainment. There are many great Class D power sections out there from Companies such as Hypex, Pascal, Powersoft, Abletec and yes ICEPower. Of course it won't make it any better but you could put an output transformer on one of those to get the weight and Heft if you want. The SWR, Ampeg, Mesa heavy amps sound great because there are well designed not because they have a big old transformer at both ends. The TH500, in my opinion, is not well designed and it uses an underpowered module and poor heat management. If there is such a thing as heft, Aquiler have designed it out of the Tonehammer amps. Yes I am tetchy, I have the flu! -
I agree with Phil. The best purchase you can buy is a High Pass Filter( Thumpinator or similar) if your amp does not have one. There is nothing useful below 30Hz and little below 60Hz. Stay away from Sub bass exiters and octavers. They destroy time and speakers!
I understand this: I have an honours degree in mechanical engineering and was a member of I.Mech.E, before jobs in manufacturing industry disappeared during the Thatcher years and I retrained as a computer scientist. Galling it may be, but that's still not the way it works in practice, 30 years later. It depends. The pinnacle of sound recording courses in the UK is widely acknowledged to be the Tonmeister course at the University of Surrey. The entry requirements are maths and physics at A level and the syllabus includes a lot of moderately difficult audio engineering maths. People graduate with a B.Mus from the Faculty of Music. Not that you will find too many Tonmeisters mixing the house PA down at the Dog and Duck. If your point is that one can't be an engineer unless one has a B.Sc. I disagree. Cambridge has a fine engineering department and doesn't award any science degrees.
Oxford award BAs in Science, I suspect Cambridge do the same.
Spot on.
Could you explain why your comment seemed more relevant to what Donald Trump has between his ears, than a sensible discussion on bass electronics?

If my previous post seems pedantic, it comes from 10 years plus hard graft, to achieve a coveted professional status. Sadly I could not even claim technician status on bass.
