1. Some jazz pickup pairs are RWRP reverse wind reverse pole. They are often the same size, not allowing for the small difference in string spacing between neck and bridge. Look at http://ironstone-guitar-pickups.co.uk/product/jazz-bass-guitar-pickups-alnico-v/ for example.
 2. With the plethora of UHF mics on 863-865 and 2.4Ghz, are the free VHF bands now less crowded with less interference? Is the equipment good enough?
 3. What a good bloke. Sent me a "used" fan free of charge for my self build amp.
 4. I listend to both the 10s and 12s at Absolute Music the other day. They have a full stage setup and they were very good. Not good for the price but very good full stop.
 5. The machine heads are at the end of a long lever so even 100g is much heavier at the end of a neck than if you held the same right in your hand.
 6.
I made the second bridge with the idea of fitting this to the first bass I ever made which currently has a Schaller 2000 bridge on it. I reshaped the wooden bridge a little to match the body shape - I think this would look quite nice. No quite sure how to amend the electronics for this but that's for another time!! Still got a little work to do on both piezo bridges but really pleased with how they turned out especially after the first attempt!! Ultimately it just came down to holding the work piece more securely and not trying to take too much off in one go.
Does that count as a low mass bridge?
 7.
Must say I do pretty much prefer 15 inch speakers. It's sounds very common to say but they really do give a certain something smaller speakers just don't give. And only 15s can deliver heft! Unless your using like an 8x10 fridge.
Heft is nearly 14" in diameter that is why you need a 15 to get it excited.
 8.
Try the Ernie Ball cobalt flats, they feel like flats but are fairly close to a round wound sound....tend to be a little sticky feeling out the pack, but stay with them and they wear in nicely Dave
I was recommended those by Passinwind but even accounting for import duty and VAT they are a little ( a lot ) expensive.
 9.
I've got a bunch of 80mm slim 24Volt fans on my desk at work, good quality ball bearing type which are very quiet at 12V. Up for grabs if anyone wants one.
I will have one if its OK. Will pm you!
 10.
I think if Jamerson were alive and still gigging he would be using IEM's and a DI box. That is the way forward, and no matter how light or loud your cab is the gigs where you can rock up with a bass and your IEMs are by far the easiest imo.
That is not why I play music. If I want to be playing over headphones, I use a Vox Amplug but playing live I like to "hear". I would not buy Martin or Taylor without a sound hole so why use a bass without an amp/speaker, if only for your own monitoring.
 11.
That would result in phase cancellation issues. Low frequency sources should seldom be split. The issue here is why a vocal only PA? Your stage rig should drive the stage, the PA should drive the room. That's the only method by which you can get a result that's good for the audience out front while remaining comfortable for the band on stage.
Bill many of the pubs are small over here and there is little point in putting everyone through FOH. Often there is no "stage" just a corner cleared of tables and chairs. No matter how hard you try, the backline is the frontline.
 12.
A strange choice of cabs to compare. Discontinued apples vs fresh oranges maybe? I'd have liked to see the comparison against any of BF's current competitors like Berg, Vanderkley, Fearless, TKS and Genzler etc. if specs are to be compared. This choice seems engineered to reach a particular conclusion.
Or maybe they were just what was to hand,
 13.
Yup, that is the one. Obviously not as independent as I thought on the basis he is a BF endorsed artist. I am still happy with my BF Big Twin II on order, however.
He is clearly not independent but apart from two things, his tests are valid. Firstly SM57 is far from ideal as s measurement mic. Secondly we have to take his word that all settings are the same. However he is trying to do things properly.
 14.
And after another week of burnt fingers and colorful language, today just might afford a first listen. I spent pretty much all day yesterday troubleshooting omissions and wiring errors, but at least I now have a test jig and a method for doing mods or repairs in the future. There are a few odds and ends in this pic that will need cleaning up eventually, but of course that's a never ending thing with DIY builds anyway.
Since I first tried those blue Powercon I loved them. They just feel professional. Are you only using one speakon?
 15.
AKG wireless mics. I have a twin pair which share a receiver. Channel 70 mics, rock solid signal and no interference.
I looked at the WSM 40s and was told they were the way to go by one dealer but the quoted range is 50 metres and I need something over 60.
 16. I would gladly buy two Stevie but finances do not really permit at the moment.
 17.
There's a certain satisfaction to be had from using a circle jig to cut out a perfect hole with a router, but the only time I ever bother is when I want to recess the speaker. Otherwise, I take the easy way out and use the jigsaw. Nobody ever sees the hole anyway!
A jigsaw can be quite accurate if you use the proper wood blade, that is the really skinny one. The wider flatter blades resist turning.
 18.
I've read this comment a lot on forums and it really doesn't make sense to me from a physics and engineering point of view. A bass is a much more complex system than just a wire oscillating between two fixed points being picked up by a magnet and wire coil. The vibrations within the body are so much a part of the finer timbre of the bass. When the string vibrates those vibrations are also transmitted into the body at the bridge and nut. Those will then resonate through the body and influence the movement of all the strings by transmitting vibrations back into them through the nut and bridge. That won't change the fundamental sound of the string (basically down to the string and pickups/electronics) but it will certainly have a marked effect on the complex vibration patterns in the string. This will, therefore affect the timbre of the string. Now, the body vibrations will be affected by a whole range of factors - shape of body and neck, materials of the body and neck, the material and construction of the bridge and nut, the neck/body join etc etc etc... Hence the differences between different woods in a similar/identical bass design or switching from set to bolt-on to thru neck design. Some resonances will have a dampening effect others an additive effect so these things may affect other physical characteristics such as sustain etc. Now that may sound far fetched and trying to blind with science gobbledygook but don't under estimate the effects that these sympathetic vibrations and resonances can have on the complex vibrations of the string. Here's a subtle example. The housing of the clock mechanism isn't moving but one of the weights picks up the vibrations from the mechanism and the pendulum and starts to move in sympathy with it... Here's a rather more well known and dramatic example of sympathetic resonance gone bad... Ironically, it's in a bridge... So, will it change the fundamental of any note? Probably not but differences can and will affect the sound/timbre in noticable ways.
This is degenerating into a Tonewood debate. You are right that the materials have some affect on how the instrument sound but it is small on solid body bass.
 19.
Quite, but once someone has decided to take a dislike to something (for whatever arcane reason) they will say anything negative they can think of. After all, if you've never used a Barefaced cab in anger (and I'm pretty sure that most of the detractors have not) what else is there to say? The other reason could be that people genuinely just don't like the look of them and won't buy one because of that. But there are more than a few on this forum who listen with their eyes and won't consider one of the best bass cabs currently available because 'they don't look right'. Having said that, I'd be reluctant to play a bass I didn't like the look of even if it were perfect in every other way, so maybe there's something in it. But then a bass cab isn't a bass - as you say it's a black, rectangular box! What's not to like??
Just to continue the silliness, its a cuboid actually
 20.
Don't cheap out on the drivers. Dave Greenboy chose the Kappalites for a reason, and he designed the cab specifically to suit those drivers. Any other driver will not give the same results. Also, use only the crossover from Speaker Hardware that is specified. These crossovers have been designed to handle a lot of power and give a very smooth transition. I built a fEARful 12/6 exactly to spec, and it's the most amazing sounding cab I have ever played through, and I've been through a LOT of cabs. If you cheap out, you will regret it.
There is not a lot of difference in the real world performance of the Beyma SM212 and the Emmy Kappalites. The main difference will be the characteristic Emminence peak in the 2K region. If you want it flat the Beyma is probably a better choice, especially as he is building one of BFM's Simplex cabinets, not a Greenboy design.
 21.
Coming from messing with the guitar (but finding the bass is much more "me"!), I get the impression that Marshall's not much of a player when it comes to the low end? Blackstar too?
I have heard seen in print that one of the ~Trace designers is now at Backstair and have heard, almost from the horses mouth, that the Blackstar Bass Range is in development.
 22.
As someone who came back to playing about 7 years ago, Marshall's problem seemed to be they just didn't seem interested. It wasn't gear I even considered buying when I came back to playing. They were, at that time, producing heavy, unreliable and unappealing amps and cabinets. Others were producing more appealing gear at similar or better prices. They suffer from being regarded as a guitar amp manufacturer and to some extent the bass range being an after thought. Even now there seems to be little effort in getting EDEN 'out there'. It's a great brand with a good reputation and you can barely find it in the UK
Eden has appeared in both my local stores this year so it seems Marshll are pushing the brand.
 23. The problem is that everyone needs something different from a cab and whilst in the early days BF were great HiFi cabs, the new additions with the 10s mean they can do the lot. TKS also get a lot of love as do many of the Boutique US makers. The main thing about Barefaced is that they put their money where their mouth ( or is that port ) is with their sale or return policy.
 24. Beyma SM212 Group buy. So far we have a total of Chienmortbb X 1 Phil Starr X 2 6V6. X 1 Any more for anymore?
 25. Once we have the design sorted and drawn with instructions, are we going to do a group buy on the drivers?
