$1350 shipped to the UK before duty VAT and the fee for customs clearance. It looks like a simple pre amp with some basic tone controls. Explain.

I was not thinking about any particular cab although the 8" cab being done bu @Phil Starr would work. I suppose I was partly also thinking about my LFSys Monza. My initial thought was a small amp in the Elf/Gnome type amp using an ICEPower module but when I looked at the costs, as usual, I realised that DIY would be MME (much more expensive). So I started thinking about exactly what I needed. I leave my amps flat, no EQ at all. I know they are flat as I have measured the response of the preamp section.

It is possible that mixing cabs would work well but as our Americans friends would say "it's a crap shoot". Two cabs will be louder and likely to produce more low end but they will also produce some odd response to a greater or lesser degree. Just to muddy the water further, as @itu said, the real measure of loudness is dB and it is the measurement of Sound Pressure Level. The two cabinets mentioned have quoted sensitivities of 101dB and 100dB respectively BUT the crucial thing is that no indication of the methodology. The usual way to measure it is feeding the speaker with 1 Watt and measure at a distance of 1 metre. If we take the 15", it is only available in an 8 ohm version. 100dB sensitivity is at the high end of sensitivity for a 15" speaker. It is possible but unlikely. The 2x10 can be either 4 or 8 ohms and if they measure the 4 ohm cab, they may have used the "trick" of feeding a 4 ohm cab with a higher voltage*. It means that the cabinet would appear almost 3dB louder. It's all marketing smoke and mirrors. *2.8 volts, the voltage used to obtain 1 watt into an 8 ohm load. That gives almost 2 watts or another 3dB.

Not sure that shorts are very rock n roll but sounded great.

I was at the World Headquarters of a well known boutique speaker maker the other day and an experiment was tried. Two identical cabinets, one loaded with a single 10. The other loaded with the same model 10 plus a properly crossed over horn/compression driver cab, FRFR if you like. Although the cabinets and bass drivers were identical, the sound with two of them was far from good. Louder yes but with there were some weird artefacts that took your attention away from the music and onto the speakers. A similar thing will happen when mixing 10s and 15s. The 10s will go higher than the 15 and the 15 will beam more meaning the sound will change as you go off axis. In addition, if the impedances are different the power will not be evenly distributed between the drivers so the total gain in volume may be less than expected.

I did not realise that there were no cab sims. However I obviously did not feel the need for them cab sims are really a form of EQ and dynamics that could be programmed manually on the B2-Four. Incidentally I still use the Free/BadCo patch on my B2-Four that you did for the B1-Four.

This may end up a bit of a ramble but I have three bass amps and I set them all flat, getting my "sound" either from one of my Zoom pedals or just using the bass itself. Last night we played at a venue that had one of those "wonderful" systems that monitors your sound level and cuts the power if you get too loud. Thankfully these are becoming few and far between. Last night only myself and the lead guitarist were plugged in to this system in ignorance. In an attempt to find the problem, I went straight form the bass into the amp. Set flat it was more than passable. Anyway it got me thinking about just having a small form power amp fed from the Zoom(s). Is anyone using this type of setup, rather than a PA cab or a tradition bass amp/cab/combo?

The Rebbels PA is a crappy Behringer Powered mixer that is used just for vocals. Two power amps, one used for FoH and one for Monitors. All speakers passive. The venue was a new one for me although a previous iteration of the band had played there a decade or more ago. The stage was in one corner, triangular in shape and tiny. There was nowhere at the front for the two monitors and the triangular shape meant the monitors could only go across the stage from. Far from ideal I thought. Wrong. Best on stage vocal monitoring sound we have had since I joined. Strictly speaking the speakers were out of phase, as they were facing each other but I could hear the vocals clearly. Now I just have to tell a certain guitarist that he cannot sing.

Get him a Sontronics Solo...

Strictly speaking cabinets output acoustic power and while it would be possible to state the power in watts, it would not make good reading for the marketeers.

Not sure what I will be bringing. My Fender Aerodyne is not in use at the moment. I might bring it so that one of our real luthier can tell me what is wrong with it, assuming I cannot work it out for myself. So from: Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass (P/J) Sire Marcus Miller M2 Bugera Veyron the MOSFET one. Ashdown Retroglide 800 LFSys Monza A.N.Other bass TBC After 8 Combo on steroids. Allen and Heath CQ20B Digital Mixer.

That was the same advice I got from Newtone. I have their Platinum round core Nickel/Steel strings on my basses and I love them. I choose them after a phone call with Neil outlying what I wanted. Not overly zingy to start with but a nice tone and the fine windings mean reduced string noise. Just ordered another two sets.

Yes or buy one from me 🤩

Another lurker here. Enjoying the journey with you both.

I never trust a moulded connector.

I must admit Lee really annoys me. He can really play but i do not want someone who over talks and he is so jolly. No one is that jolly all the time. Nathan is calmer and more measured.

Noiseless Jazz pickups recommendations

+1 Superb pickups. -
I think they had that either on my Trace. BLX130 or Ashdown Combo of some years ago ( the one down from the ABM)

Although I make and use cables for live playing I use the same Thomann system for soundcheck. It is stated as not suitable for active guitars but my Sire M2 works fine and the fact that it has a built in tuner works well for acoustic guitar on open mic nights.

Probably comes from the time that egg boxes were deemed to have sound absorbing properties.

Wireless system - Lekato, Boss or something else?

No, The channel spacing on 2.4GHz has overlapping channels and 2.4GHz is used by Bluetooth and other technologies. The channels on 5.8GHz do not overlap and there is no Bluetooth chatter. -
In one sentence you have really added to my knowledge of US geography. I had no idea where Wisconsin was/is although I had a feeling it was central-ish. I did not realise how far north it was, so close to Canuck land. The only downside to Wisconsin for a real ale lover seems to be “what made Milwaukee famous”.

This suggest that a full valve amp is the gold standard. 🤣
