  1. If you are going for an economy option try Wilkinson. IMHO better than the MHs on most far-East basses. However I would measure three dimensions on your bass, the distance between the pairs of screw holes at each end the distance between the two rows. If you look at say the GB-640s from Gotoh you will see the dimensions that I mean. Gotoh GB640 The alternative style is the GB520. Fewer holes and smaller backplate but from memory better retro-fitting to Japanese/Korean/Indonesian instruments. Both of theses are Res-O-Lite series so expect to pay around £100 for them. They are very light though and if you are happy with standard weight machine heads, Gotoh and others have that covered. I would finish by saying check the dimensions before buying as it nearly led to a costly mistake in my case.
  2. I have just ordered my 3rd and 4th pack of Newtone Platinum Rounds. Not quite as zingy as the Diamonds but with reduced finger noise. The great thing is that Neil at Newtone will advise you on what string to order if you tell him whet you want. Considering they are hand wound in the UK, they are a bargain. I tried Elite Detroit Flats last time and they were OK but I went straight back to an old set of Newtones.
  3. Pease do. It will be a trip down memory lane for me.
  4. I must say that the old Picato Groundwounds were my all time favourite but they are no longer available. It is wise to go down 5 thou or so when changing from rounds to flats, especially if not going for one of the low tension brands. I have tried Elite Detroit Flats, Picato Flats. Olympia flas amaong others and IMHO the Picatos are the best. of those.
  5. While I have bot tried every flat on the market, esp the £70 a set brigade, I can say that Fender flats are just about the worst. When they were made buy Fender and even since D'Addario made them for Fender.
  6. The pedal steel guitar can sound really nice but a lot of times it is overused. As your friend plays a Tele too, he probably has the balance worked out.
  7. The G&L pre-amps use passive tone controls and then feed the signal to a preamp. They use the same very low power op-amp used in the early MM 2 band pre-amps so power consumption is tiny. The battery is not disconnected if the plug is in the jack but the low power consumption means it will last a long, long time.
  8. @Chienmortbb Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass, Sire Marcus Miller M2, Bugera Veyron. LFSys Monza Cabinet, Zoom B2Four.
  9. Quite Right. There is no reason why a well designed amp should hiss these days.
  10. It’s more or less wipe on wipe off so no. You do not need to slather it on and make sure you do wipe it off and buff lightly after a short time. The lustre from the finger boards is lovely.
  11. There are some really good presets on there, unlike the earlier pedals. Very usable or easy to tweak. Hope it helps.
  12. I don’t but I will ask on the DIY Audio forum.
  13. Is patch 61 Hysteria2003 any good?
  14. Was it Bessie Smith or someone else that sang “It ain’t the meat it’s the motion”?
  15. This. I use this https://howardproducts.uk/feed-n-wax/
  16. You had to see them live. I have never gotten into Rush although many on here worship the ground Geddy walks on.
  17. Just try taking mine away…….
  18. Oh dear I hope this does not descend into a "you show me yours and I'll show you mine" thread.
  19. It’s hard to carry on this or the Tonewood debate without lots of opinion and/or hocus locus. The truth is that every component contributes to the sound of a bass. In fact the largest influence on the sound of a bass is the lump playing it.
  20. If you put Machine Heads rather than Tuners you might have got more replies. To be more helpful, look at some of the Gotoh’s. .They are not cheap but in my opinion they are the best. You will need to measure the post hole and make sure that the machine heads will fit in the space. If it looks like you will need to modify the bass, look at different models. I did this too late, after I modded mine I found a Gotoh model that would have slipped straight in.
  21. Prepare yourself for a shock. OEM driver are notoriously expensive.
  22. I did this when I modified my Ashdown After 8.
  23. That is Newtone’s recommendation. Of course this procedure is needed for any round cored strings.
