Are Trios the Way to go for Pub Gigs
Chienmortbb replied to Chienmortbb's topic in General Discussion
I should say that in my band there are two dinosaurs, and they are the two youngest. It might take a giant meteor crash to get us to a trio very quickly. -
Is there a modern bass head or combo with integrated reverb?
Chienmortbb replied to Hellzero's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have always shied away from reverb live as I was old early on in my bass adventure that is just helped muddy the sound. Unusually for me, I never questioned it. Any comments? -
Duck Duck Go works well as a search engine and does not track you. I have long considered Google the evil empire.

More and more venues are seem to line smaller bands/acts and I recently came across a venue only licensed for up to three performers. Oit five piece is struggling in many ways at the moment but even before the current problems, we list gigs either because of the size of our fee or we were too big. We could drop out fee as a three piece and still make more money but I would need to do more singing. Has anyone else slimmed down this way and what were your experiences?

@bigthumb I feel for you. A year ago we had a stable band, the rhythm guitarist was not the best, but we’re were gigging and getting repeat bookings. The aforementioned guitarist, a heavy smoker, had a heart attack and had gone from barely adequate to … well let’s just say he has got worse. The lady gfeee gigs of 24 were not our best as the great of us dreaded gigs, the last practice at the beginning of January was really hard work. The gig has dried up, first booking in 2025, May and we have about 5 gigs confirmed. All the band know the problem and it might mean reforming under different name. The question is. Who acknowledges the elephant in the room? I think it has to be the poor old bassist that either drops the grenade or leaves. Anyway good luck in your quest to re-form the band.

I commented on another member's comments about how hard it is now to ship things in and out of the UK, and said it was due to Brexit. I was then accused of being political. Can you confirm the position? As someone that imports things from the EU, I know what Brexit has done to business and that is not politics it is counting, and I have the invoices and customs fees and shipping delays to prove it.

I was directly replying to @agedhorse's comments about how hard it is to do business here now. I could have put it in off topic but I believe it is entirely on topic for the way this thread has developed. I am happy to refer myself to the moderators though.

There are tell-tale signs if you know what you are looking for.

Harley Benton Block-800B vs bugera Veyron 1001M
Chienmortbb replied to KinkMaster's topic in Amps and Cabs
There was a long and involved thread that went very deep into the design on the German Bassists Forum. It was after a lot of criticism on there from German players. There was also a series of mods published to improve the EQ. So yes, it was heresay as I did not try it myself, but it was more than just the opinions of the chattering classes. I can confirm that the Veyron has a good EQ section as I have used one for 4 years or so over 100 gigs. I will repeat though that the HB has an excellent power section and is worth the money for that alone. https://www.soundimports.eu/en/icepower-700as1.html -
To me it they sound a bit lacking but YMMV.

Harley Benton Block-800B vs bugera Veyron 1001M
Chienmortbb replied to KinkMaster's topic in Amps and Cabs
I am not sure whether the HB still has the same pre-amp but many said that it was not that great. So if you had to use the pre-amp, the Veyron would be better. Incidently despite the specs on each, the HP uses a 700 watt module and the Veyron is just over 700. No noticeable difference. -
The GB528 are 12 mm, just 0.52mm short of 1/2”. These tend to fit Far Eastern basses whereas the GB640s fit US basses as far as I remember.

After Eighty - Small Ashdown Combo On Steroids
Chienmortbb replied to Chienmortbb's topic in Build Diaries
Not much of an update, more an RIP. The After 80 has been retired. I did some work on it a while ago and slipped with my meter probe, this caused some magic smoke and on reflection, a better plan would be to start again. When it was working it was a great practice amp, real bass tone, and plenty of oompf. It w as the inspiration for @Phil Starr’s Basschat 8” design as the precursor to that was an extension cab for the After 80. I may or may not do a combo version of that at some point but at the moment I am clearing all existing projects. My new year resolution is to finish everything else before I start another project so do not hold your breath. -
Many drivers have 8 mounting holes and using all of them with wood screws should be fine if you don’t have Ex-Yodal roadies moving your gear around. It may be worth gluing some wooden blocks behind the baffle to give the screws more to bite into though.

As I remember it, I don’t remember much very well these days, When Leo Fender asked one of his top guys to investigate dead spots on P & J basses, he determined that the 4 in a line design was the problem and that a 2x2 would reduce it and a headless bass would eliminate it. However the 4 in line design was already an icon and it was decided to leave things as they were.

When I was a guitars, in the Stone Age, I lusted after a Verithin but they went out of favour once we could lust after Les Paul’s and Strats. I suspect they would give an ES335 a run for its money when fully restored.

Greco and Fernandez were common in Japan when I first went there. I understand that they were both of good quality.
-
In my opinion the quality of the Gotohs are better too.

If one came up near me I would snap it up.

Harley Benton Block-800B vs bugera Veyron 1001M
Chienmortbb replied to KinkMaster's topic in Amps and Cabs
I have the Bugera and an Ashdown Retroglide 800, both the Ashdown and the HB Bass Block use the 700 watt ICEPower 700AS1 module. Bypassing the preamp in either, works fine. -
I have the CQ20, Allen and Heath and I found the learning and set up curve for Mixing Station too long. It is also not the most attractive UI IMHO. It does come into its own if you are a pro sound tech, where you may meet a different mixer each gig, though.

I was looking at a new scratch plate for a Peavey I paid £50 for. Seems like I will stick with the white as a £50 scratch plate on a £50 bass?
