  1. I think this is the real point. In ideal conditions, with trained athletes, marginal gains win medals. However the Ashdowns and Peaveys are more than adequate for most bassists. To be honest the ABM series from Ashdown and the old Peavey Mk 4s are some of my favourite amps. Mesa and Ampeg might seem more desirable in a sort of reverse "Not Invented Here" sort of way and, especially the Mesa's have some unique features but my dad's 1960s Raleigh got him to work more comfortably that a Chris Boardman bike.
  2. As far as I know Dave Grreen and Guy Pratt do the technical stuff at Ashdown. To me they seem equally helpful.
  3. I always thought that the SVTs looked like someone made them from bits left over from other projects. Of course looks can be deceptive, sadly in my case they are not.
  4. That is where I switched off.
  5. The guitar range are excellent but we all know that a bass amp is such a different beast. Still looking forward to trying one though.
  6. I usually speak to Guy and he is equally helpful.
  7. Three years ago we had three of the original RM500s at the Southwest Bass Bash and the fans were all but silent.
  8. Correct, unless the slot is a slot port where none of the the sides are cabinet sides that a shelf type slot port will calculate incorrectly. ITs proabbly whay DIYers keep away from them. Innthe plus side they add cabinet rigidity but they are also difficult to calculate. With a round port you can "tune" it easily.
  9. Contact Ashdown, Their service is second to none.
  10. Get a DI from Orchid Electronics great value and properly balanced. Never needed a ground lift. It goes between your bass and amp so pre EQ. http://orchid-electronics.co.uk/classic_DI.htm They do a muting version and a micro version I have two of the classics in case I get a player that has no DI out. In reality all DIs are post EQ to some degree as the first stage of DI is in the bass itself and then any pedals in your signal chain. The Orchid DI ( and many others) give the cleanest signal to the desk but how much control do you want to give the sound tech?
  11. Sadly I have a rehearsal booked for the 24th. Last one before the first gig or the year....however with COVID on the march again......I had to cancel tomorrow's rehearsal as I tested positive this morning!
  12. I had one of those too.
  13. That’s off as I have the Bassamp 100 head and it has great tone. I suspect it was the cabinet as in those days it cabinet design was hit and miss.
  14. Interesting. I use mine sometimes for practice but have never used it in anger. It often seems that the guitars in the band can’t/won’t play in the original key, then that makes the bass part harder. Or I have the part in muscle memory from another band and the new band decided to do it in another key.
  15. I have a cable made with SC Spirit and I use it from my pedal board to my amp.
  16. Yes my issue with Van Damme was that the cable broke just past the strain relief. It may be better now but once bitten (actually it was more than once).
  17. I have made hundreds (maybe thousands) of cables over the years and in most situations, the standard quality cables from Sommer* and Klotz** are my choice. There are a number of reasons but the main ones are: Better bend radius. The cables like the one under discussion gave a bigger bend radius than the ones with a 6-6.5mm diameter cables. trying to coil a fatter cable is tedious. Connectors. Many connectors, including the Neutrik ones I use do not like thicker cables. Those connectors look like the standard NP2RX from Neutrik and those are designed for up to 7mm cable. So either the chuck has been modified or omitted completely meaning that the rubber exit shroud IS the cable retention. The advantages of the thicker cables only really show up for full range signals, for bass, even slapped bass, a good quality 6-6.5mm cable is more than enough over stage distances. Of course there are other quality cables around and many swear by Van Damme or Mogami. I have had bad experiences with Van Damme cables over the years and Mogami are hard to get in the UK. There is also no real benefit in either brand over the easily available Sommer and Klotz. Finally if you really need to go a long way from an unbalanced source like a bass, use a DI box or buffer. If you have a pedal board, these larger cables may be useful to take the output to the amp/mixer especially if you use true bypass pedals. In this application they don move and that may be a blessing for elf and safety. Or you could go wireless, but remember a cable is always your best backup. They don´t need batteries or charging. *Tricone 2, Tricone XXL or SC Clasique Braided. **AC110
  18. I currently have a SEAT LEON and although not small, I cannot get everything in the boot. Now some cars, like the Honda Jazz, have legendary flexibility but other than a van, what is there?
  19. To be fair there was nothing else and no one, not even the manufacturers new jack shite about bass amplification.
  20. I was at one gig where the kocj drum would totally dominate whenever it was played. AS a result the rest of the band just dissappeared for about a second.
  21. I was once told by a sound person to turn down so I did. He said you are still too loud, i turned down. Still tooloud, I turned the master to 0. .......You are still too loud. He went a vivid shade of red when I told him.
