  1. I chose powered amps as it means that the failure of one amp/power supply will not affect the other amp. The main use would be of a single channel feeding both the subs and the top PA speakers. There would also be line outputs for the second channel. This would be the line outputs for a second channel of subs and tops, just by adding another two channel amp. While thinking about the project it became clear that with simple switching the amp could be used as a standard two channel amp or a single channel (bridged amp) outputting well over 1000 watts. Here is a mock up of the rear panel:
  2. It is a steep learning curve for me. One thing I should mention is it is not a low cost option. I would have bought a ready rolled unit if I could.
  3. As I mentioned I wanted to use parts I had as much as possible and I already had the enclosure, https://modushop.biz/site/index.php?route=product/product&path=25_290&product_id=429 I also have the 3e Audio DSP module based on Analog Devices ADAU1701 chip. This is a basic DSP with 2 analogue inputs and four analogue outputs making it ideal for use as an active stereo crossover. http://www.3e-audio.com/dsp/adau1701-2in4out/
  4. I started a thread in the Amps and Cabs forum discussing the shortage of amps. I wanted a new power amp for my PA as I sold my heavy amps and it was as I was looking that I found there was a shortage of amps. Here is the other thread: So I decided I had enough modules and other parts around to build one myself. I had a number of power amp modules plus an enclosure and a DSP module that I wanted to use. I wanted a reasonably high power amp that was versatile, powerful and reasonably easy to repair. However I soon realised that the mish mash of modules I had would not fit the "easy to repair" requirement. I soon narrowed it down to two modules, both powered. These were the ICEPower 125ASX2 and a Connex IRS500SMPS. The Icepower unit can reach close to 500 watts into 4 ohms and the Connex can exceed 500 watts into 4 ohms. I decided on the Connex as the basis of my two channel power amp. I have had each of these units for some time and although sonically and in terms of power, there really is little to chose between them, the ICEPower unit seems to be affected by the worldwide shortage of components whereas the Connex was qouted as 10 days to shipment. In addition the Connex unit was more economical. A;though 125ASX2 is available from China for approc £120, most of theses are counterfiet and again would fall foul of the "easy to repair" clause. The Connex modules came out at about £120 per unit including shipping and Ihave had good support from Connex. I bought 2 and will then have three once the other two arrive (they were shipped 12th November).
  5. If you do it like that you need to pt insulating sleeving on the legs (ie heat shrink and then attache the body to the PCB with silicon. It is easier and better to put the cap in the PCB.
  6. In a bass with an 18 volt preamp, it should be above 18 volts. Type is irrelevant. Don't get fooled by the snake oil of orange drop or oil filled paper.
  7. The only decent Tuner app for the Phone is the Peterson Stobe Tuner it is as much as your Snark but much more accurate.
  8. Precision Ports are probably the leaders in flared port technology. A quick look at their website will give you an idea os the flare required.
  9. This is the Veyron set with all controls set to 12 o'clock, the -3dB point is approximately 30Hz. I did not notice that the top end went out so far. This is the output of the preamp, from memory at the headphone output. In my opinion 35Hz seems to be the optimum -3dB point for an HPF so the concatenated filters in the amp and Thumpinator may weel approximate that.
  10. Oh dear how did I miss this? PM'd
  11. I cannot vouch for all those manufacturers but I have measured the frequency response of both Ashdown MiBass 2.0 and the Bugera Veyron1001M and both have baked in HPF. As @Phil Starrsays, there is no need for the ultra low end, it just muddy's the sound, can set off unwanted room resonances as well as stealing the headroom from our amps.
  12. From memory the BDI21 has a slightly mid scooped sound. However I never felt is was too scooped aand of course you can nreduce the bas/treble controls to compensate. I have the equipment to measure the output of the BDI21 and of course I have a BDI21 however both are in storage at the moment.
  13. To be fair the BD!21 does give a nice slightly overdriven sound that you cannot get from any amp I have tried.
  14. First thing I tried was the battery.
  15. There is a reason oak is rarely used for guitars and I cannot remember why exactly. I will be back with either a reason or apology.
  16. That is what I have done. I thought about it for a while, I am an electronics engineer but have a number of projects on the go. I have culled my bass collection down to 2 and as the other two are both Fender style 24" thought I would try something different and I loved the colour (now discontinued). Of course I did not have much of a chance to play it but the neck seemed chunkier than my other basses.
  17. Well despite Hermes* best efforts the bass arrived and guess what? No output from the preamp. So I can either strip it out and go passive or fit a new preamp. Or send it back as faulty. Decisions decisions. As for the pickups I could put the ones I originally had in my Fender Aerodyne. I think they mighty sound quite good in this bass. I put DiMarzios in the Aerodyne and they improved that bass. Decisions decisions! *To be fair to Hermes, I sold a bass on here and sent it this week, next day Hermes. It arrived -----next day.
  18. Still waiting! Hermes seem to have had a major problem in the last week with the tracking system just saying major error. It looks to be fixed now and hopefully it will arrive tomorrow. 🤞Here is a picture from Reverb.
  19. That and a number of Aria basses are based on the Matsumoto design that included the Thunder 1/1A. It is a beauty.
  20. I have succumbed. I have a 32" Ibanez Mezzo in Sea Foam Green on the way. Purchased on Reverb. It's not new as I don't think they do this colour in a 4. Pictures when it arrives. Oh and its my first 32". I have tried short scales but did not get on with them. You never know it may turn up in the for sale on here if I don't get on with it.
  21. I would need to have a look at both some time but mine was redrawn from the original hand drawn diagram from @stevie. There may have been small changes after that. I seem to remember that any changes were very small. @stevieis a perfectionist and the chnages would probably not be noticeable in real life.
  22. Yes for instance there is little above 1KHz off axis on a 12 even though the spec suggests otherwise. Even with an extended on axis response, there is often a nasty effect where the cone starts to behave in an erratic manner (often called cone breakup). You can clearly see this effect on the link to th graph for an Eminence Keappalite 3012 LF. We are looking at the peak at approx 1.7KHz. The one thing this graph does not show is the OFF AXIS response. This Beyma 12" response, shows the 45 degree off axis response dotted: So at 2 KHz the output is 8-10dB down compared to the output from 200Hz to 1KHz. Incidentally the driver(s) in a single cabinet on the floor will be about 45 degrees from your ears if you are 1-2m in front of it. So it is not only the audience to your left and right that are losing out on your lovely tone. Smaller speakers have better OFF AXIS responses as can be seen by the frequency response graph for the Beyma 6CVM2. At 2KHz the fall is "only" 4dB and there is output much higher up the spectrum. @Phil Starr recently built a 6" cab loaded with a Fane 6" driver that was well received at the recent South West Bass Bash.
  23. Do you have the original bits?
  24. Was looking for a printer at the weekend. Same story, no choice anywhere.
  25. He was a half decent songwriter so he deserves his rewards. Cracking pint of cider that Bolly.
